PS5 turned into Linux Steam Machine, but only on older unpatched firmware

Look at how he's put his PS5 on the table. It's Herman!

It was 60 with RT shadows from day one.

PC version adds RTGI and RT reflections (only present in 30fps console mode).

Yeah, but why it's locked to 30fps when we can literally see that it could run in higher fps? And this is in some way handicapped by Linux and other software.
Read what he has done. His PS5 "overheats too quickly" with some of the clocks he's set. You don't know what he's using. The fact that you think this guy can optimise better than Rockstar...

And this brand new hardware releases very close to the start of the next generation and will need to "last" several years. Not to mention the crappy marketing Valve did about being able to run most games at "4k" 60. Talk about creating false expectations.

at least GPU and CPU power wise it will be fine, because of the PS6 Portable being even lower on both ends probably.

but textures will eventually look like soup on it

Guy? This is PC build, he doesn't optimize anything.

And he was talking about highest power option on PS5 - we don't know how often or rare it is in native PS5 games. For sure we know that GPU and CPU are able to downclock itself if one part needs more power (smartshift). On Linux it's probably overloading both pieces of hardware with max clocks at the same time, that's why it's overheating.

Well obviously it's the PC build but he is using specific settings and using clocks that are not standard (ie the PS5 overheats over time)

Yes overheating yet doing things that rockstar wouldn't do. What do you suggest, rockstar use these clocks and limit playtime? It's cool for a story though.

TBH I doubt PS5 devs even can set it up so it can overheat a console. But linux probably don't have the same limitations as native PS5 OS.

We also don't know in what state his slim PS5 is (could overheat much faster than other units). Other than that it seems like he is just using standard linux gaming setup for this game - and it runs surprisingly good compared to native PS5 version that has stupid limitations.

PS5 OS is a specialised FreeBSD distro. What limitations?

I don't know what to say. What stupid limitations do you think are purposely built into a PS5 version? You think Sony and Rockstar wouldn't be chasing the highest performance possible and optimising?

You think PS5 OS and SDK allows developers to make games that would be able to overheat a console?

Rockstar locked the game to 30fps with RT reflections, you can see on the video that it's able to run in 1440p with RT reflections around 50-60FPS. Isn't that a stupid limitation in native console version?

And also - another important part, PS5 port was done way before EE build appeared on PC, it could potentially be better optimized for RT.

Ofcourse not that's my point.

No because you have performance RT at 60fps on native PS5. You have this guy making hardware specific changes to do other things that may overheat the console. Those aren't "stupid limitations" of the PS5 OS though.

GTAV Enhanced Edition was literally the late PC port of the features previously only available on the PS5/XS.

Any possible further optimisation in RT in that time are applied in the numerous patches that came after, GTA is a GaaS game. It had a patch that fixed RT shadows a few months ago for example. They're not diverging, they're all 1.72 and code kept as similar as possible. Console just got the features first as an exclusive.

GTA 5 on PS5 is running 1440p with RT shadows only. This build is running with RT reflections and shadows (RT High):

He ended up with 3.2GHz for CPU and 2.0GHz for GPU, that seems pretty conservative to use for most PS5 games. Remember that normally console runs 2.23GHz for GPU in games and up to 3.5GHz for CPU?

You don't know what clock he is running the GPU in that demonstration, notice the monitoring at the top doesn't display anything useful. Look at the temp stuck on 81° Celsius. That is pretty high. God knows what that GPU temp is.
It even says "his PS5 Slim reportedly overheats too quickly at those clocks." So sure there is enough power to run at their limits of 3.5Ghz and 2.23Ghz but you should never maintain that with high workloads. You can have spikes with those clocks at the same time though, there is power enough power for it.

Just get a pc. I find it weird people stop updating their consoles or even buy a 2nd one just to use an exploit. I wonder why people go through these great lengths for "homebrew" and "emulation".

it's a hobby...
also you might have an old console you never use, and homebrew will give it new life 🤷

It would be interesting to see how the other PS5 models/SKUs can handle the heat.

We know that Sony always changed something in the cooling system with every SKU.

It is always nice to see what TheFlow is capable of doing with these Systems/consoles.
There is a reason, why he is a legend

Wow!

Cool utility like curing cancer with the PlayStation 3 Cell.

Surely PlayStation 5 owners or those who will own one in the future are thinking how awesome this is.

Wow,i wish rockstar release gta 5 enhanced edition with full rt rtgi on ps5,this video proves that it is capable rtgi +reflections on 60fps at 2k,but i reckon that is not in priority for rockstar rn

I get why they did it looking at memory prices but machine is quite stupidly unbalanced. Strong CPU with weak GPU, reminds me of PS3, hahaha.

And you even won't be able to use PS5 texture settings in some games. Also, it will support XeSS but no native support for FSR4...
Why will it not have native FSR4 support? I thought AMD will release the int8 FSR4 version for all RDNA 2/3/3.5 GPUs after its debut on PS5 Pro (PSSR2).

No one 100% knows what they will do but so far it seems they are not interested in this.

Few months ago they wanted to end game read driver support for RDNA1/2...
