Once I move out of the college dorms, I'll be finding my own source of high speed internet. I'd like something relatively inexpensive, with decent dl/ul speeds, easily compatible with Xbox Live, and decent service (connection doesn't mysteriously die or go slow). The campus network has been total ass for the last 11 months, so my standards are pretty low. 300K/sec off of newsgroups would be more than great.

Verizon DSL seems to be the cheapest option around, at $29.99 a month. Anyone want to weigh in on their quality of service?

If it makes any difference (different providers in different regions of the country), I'm in northeast Florida (Jacksonville).

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
seeing this beneath "One in Four buys broadband for porn" made me chuckle.

You gonna get cable? They usually offer a discount if you get both from the same company.

A Shining Example
I spend $48 a month on Comcast. Right now the average speeds are around 384K/sec. They are doubling it to 768K/sec in January. I've got no complaints.

I loved Verizon DSL in NYC. But then I had to move, and my roomate has RoadRunner, which I find to be worse. However, I don't pay for it, so I can't really complain.

Comcast would be the only option if I get a cable modem. Their pricing structure doesn't look so great. $42.95 a month, even if I subscribe to their cable TV service. It's faster than most DSL connections, but over 1/3 more expensive than Verizon.

Verizon DSL is 1.5Mbps download/385Kbps upload. Is the UL fast enough for a good experience on Live? I'm told that it is heavily reliant on upload speeds since all the games are peer-to-peer.

The upload is fine... I played on XBL with Verizon with no problems. Have you confirmed with Verizon that 1.5 is the fastest available in your area? I vaguely recall that come colks can get 3 now....

I have 3000/768 from Verizon and it's excellent. The thing about DSL is that you can only get the higher speeds if you live less than a certain distance away from the Central Office. You can use this tool to see how far you are, though I'm not entirely sure how accurate it is:

Verizon is also running a promotion right now for certain areas of NY, NJ, and CT where you can get 3000/768 for $29/month if you sign up for a 1-year contract. I was able to sign up for it and they sent me a new modem with a built in wireless router too.

Comcast is crap where we live...
Cox was incredible! (but I think it's only available in Santa Barbara)

We're using Ygnition right now, it's not bad, could be better...

Shit, according to their website Verizon DSL doesn't seem to be available where I am right now. They don't have a coverage map, though. WTF? You just enter a phone number and they tell you availability. I wish they had a map, as it might kinda influence what section of town I move to.

So what else looks decent? =(

I was at Bell DSL a while back, and they told me that their DSL costs about $40CDN, BUT, you need to have a phone line first, which is another $40CDN or so. In conclusion, if you want DSL, make sure that you want a home phone.

Where are you located? I hope they are doing this in fresno ca. They cut me back to 384k back in june. I was at 512 before that. I hope they arent cutting upload speeds again.

Comcast is good but SBCYahoo is where its at if you need all of your media utilities on one bill.
