RPCS3 - Two Years of Major PS3 Emulation Improvements!

I tried playing it on RPCS3, but I got stuck on a part that requires using the Sixaxis. Same thing with Lair.

I had the same problem when playing on PS3 using Dual Shock 4 lol. Games were so retarded back then with this motion bullshit.

At least on emulator you can probably mark those inputs for keyboard or something.

RPCS3 just got a major update two days ago bringing better PS3 emulation to us all! And because RPCS3 is really the only PS3 emulator I'd recommend...that's even better! Plus it should work for Steam Deck and EmuDeck as well! and considering there really isn't another good PS3 emulator option...and this is why retro gaming is making a comeback! RPCS3 v0.0.40 is out

RPCS3 just got a major update yesterday bringing better PS3 emulation to us all! And because RPCS3 is really the only PS3 emulator I'd recommend...that's even better! Plus it should work for Steam Deck and EmuDeck as well! and considering there really isn't another good PS3 emulator option...and this is why retro gaming is making a comeback! Because the SPU code has been bent to the devs will now!
Can't listen to that guy ... anything new about what he says?

Summary of RPCS3 PlayStation 3 Emulation Updates

This video provides an insightful overview of recent improvements in PlayStation 3 emulation using RPCS3, focusing primarily on performance enhancements that benefit a wide range of users, from high-end gaming PCs to low-spec systems.

Core Concepts and Key Updates

  • SPU (Synergistic Processing Unit) Optimization:
The PlayStation 3's architecture relied heavily on SPUs, which historically posed challenges for multi-platform games due to their complex coding requirements. The latest RPCS3 updates have improved SPU emulation by recognizing and optimizing common code patterns, resulting in performance gains across all games.
    • Games run more smoothly on all systems.
    • Even low-end PCs see better frame rates.
    • Some titles, like Twisted Metal, experience a 5% to 7% increase in frame rates due to their heavy SPU usage.
  • AVX Instruction Set:
RPCS3 benefits from processors with AVX instruction support, providing extra performance boosts. While this remains a requirement for best emulation results, the new SPU improvements help users closer to their performance goals even without upgrading hardware.
    • Shader compilation stutter remains an intrinsic part of emulation but improved CPU efficiencies help maintain smoother gameplay once shaders are compiled.
    • Audio rendering improvements have been noted on low-end CPUs such as the dual-core Athlon 3000G, with reduced audio stuttering in games like Gran Turismo 5.
  • Developer Recognition:
Notably, a Twisted Metal developer expressed amazement at RPCS3's progress, initially doubting full PS3 emulation feasibility. This underscores the emulator's rapid advancements and growing credibility.

Key Insights

  • SPU optimization is the foundational improvement driving widespread performance gains in RPCS3.
  • These improvements reduce CPU load, making PS3 emulation more accessible on lower-end hardware.
  • AVX support remains beneficial but is complemented by these new efficiency gains.
  • Portable platforms like Steam Deck are becoming viable options for PS3 emulation, boosted by new usability features such as live setting adjustments.
  • RPCS3 continues active development with the ambitious goal of near-complete game compatibility, potentially achievable by 2030.
  • User experience improvements are as important as raw performance gains, highlighted by the ability to tweak settings without restarting games.

Conclusion

Recent RPCS3 updates deliver significant, broadly applicable performance improvements through SPU emulation optimizations, enabling smoother gameplay on both high-end and low-end systems without additional hardware investment. Enhanced audio rendering and portable device support further expand RPCS3's appeal. Continuous development ensures that more games will become fully playable over time, making RPCS3 a leading solution for PlayStation 3 emulation enthusiasts.

This reminds me to try 3D Dot Game Heroes again. Last time I tried it I got further than before with no crashes but then I started playing something else.
