Shenmue III exclusive interview with Yu Suzuki in GamesTM

There is one thing I wished... something I wished for over 15yrs for Shenmue. I want Yu Suzuki to increase the value of buying drinks and eating food. If Ryo is always well hydrated and eats appropriately (on time) then everything he does will always be on top form. However, if you eat and drink at inappropriate times or even hardly ever eat or drink at all, you will see Ryo always fatigue and his attacks and defense will be weaker than before. He will never go below or above a certain threshold, the whole point is to make Ryo feel more "alive" and to give you a stronger reason to use all those awesome vending machines, restaurants and so on. Yes, you noticed that I didn't mention a HUD for this, well, it's because you don't need it because Ryo's body language well do all the talking. To go a little deeper without going too deep, you can let everything be leveled by the amount and quality level of the food which will help make more distinction between eating food from a restaurant to one from a small shop or vending machine. The other domino effect of this would mean that you NEED to make money and make sure you have money in your pockets, which will domino effect further into money management. This is what I'd love for there to be in Shenmue. It would be fantastic...

I could see people hating something like that, but I would love that. It sounds sort of similar to how Snake Eater worked, albeit more focused on offense than defense. Considering Shenmue III takes place in rural china, it would be neat to have to actually hunt for food from time to time at some point. Like spend a period of the game focusing on surviving in the wilderness - building shelter, hunting, etc. I don't know if the story necessarily calls for that, though.

So amazing seeing Shenmue back in magazines

Mentioned on the cover, no less:

What's going to be really surreal is seeing Shenmue III eventually being the cover image of future magazines. It's bound to happen, especially as it gets close to launch.

I've played virtually the man's entire catalog now, with only a couple of extremely rare exceptions. I have a bunch of really fond memories of my father and I playing Hang-On as a kid, particularly watching my dad complete the circuit over and over again (something I actually couldn't do for many years).

I remember around that time a big supermarket had two arcade cabs: Hang On with the motorcycle add-on and Dig Dug. I used to stare at those games whenever parents went shopping and occasionally played some sessions. The demo music of Hang On still rings in my ears.
Also Space Harrier and After Burner in the arcades were experiences from another world

Yu Suzuki games typically have incredible soundtracks.

It was weird how the SMS version only plays this at the title screen, and only the first few notes.

Space Harrier got a ton of bomb-ass remixes over the years, it's one of the most iconic sega songs. One of my favorite versions is the FM music version from the japanese Sega Master System bios: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_PG_AuibgY

My favorite part of the Space Harrier theme is the bit that usually coincides with you entering a tunnel area around 2 minutes in. I like how the stars twinkle in rhythm in the SMS Bios. I also like the bonus stage music, and the Space Harrier 3D remix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoT239oyLyk

That scratchy music is burned into my brain.

Sonic & Sega All-stars has my favorite Afterburner remix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wR1hPFYAGM

Whenever I play Afterburner Climax on my PS3, I always enable the classic afterburner II soundtrack. It fits so much better.

I always felt like Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter had enormously underrated soundtracks. Dural/The Theme of Virtua Fighters is probably my favorite track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwDw5PE2IwQ

I wish Virtua Racing's music was longer, honestly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOXyqDz3E5Y

Of all his properties, however, Shenmue II has the best soundtrack. Hundreds of incredible songs, including the entire soundtracks from Outrun, Space Harrier, Afterburner, and more. I could never pin down a single favorite Shenmue song, but I think The Initiator is the most dramatic.

awesome! thanks krej.

What? Sega hasnt commented on shenmue 3 successful kickstarter yet? Wtf.

Dudes must really want to dissociate themselves from this ip.

ehh...they (clearly with sony pushing it) allowed it to happen. it's not an IP they're gonna expand on much on their own with their current strategy; barring them taking an uncharacteristic risk with 1/2 HD there's just not much for them to say here, sadly.
