Please, DirectX is at its 9th version. Its got so much documentation, helper functions and support, I don't see how Sony plans to compete. For once I'll have to say MS owns cause D3D9 is especially with the D3DX library makes life just that much easier.

All that seems to be saying is that Sony is developing an API for PS3. Given how different the PS3's architecture is supposed to be, that's no surprise.

They need more than just OpenGL to take on DirectX. They need something that covers audio (DirectSound), Input (DirectInput), Networking (DirectPlay), and any other funky APIs that may come up in the future. But Sony REALLY needs to do this. DirectX and XNA are standards that survive from generation to generation of Microsoft platform. Sony needs something equivalent so that developers don't have to reinvent the wheel on each new platform API. Back in the day it was fine for every console to have a new API-set that would be somewhat similar but very different, that just won't fly anymore.

I thought Sony did support OpenGL?

While there was a PS2 port of OpenGL, it was unofficial and too slow for real production use. If Sony did adopt a compliant OpenGL (and likely OpenAL for audio if they went that route), then they could indeed get people somewhat energized. Here's the rub though - the OpenGL state machine is NOT well suited to the way the EE crunches data. It would require Sony to create some standard extensions in order to expose the pipeline completely, and that wouldn't really make a good business move. Better to come up with a OpenGL-like API that more closely models their hardware architectures going forward (since they all seem to revolve around more complex versions of the EE) than to try to fit the hardware into the OpenGL state machine.

The soon Sony jumps to the PC bandwagon (not with Vaios but with a real alternative to old x86 iterations) the more we are going to laugh.
I understand they use their own standard for 3D graphics but I think they should stay with OGL for the sake of the comunity.

You know sony has to make EVERYTHING they use proprietary.

Thankfully they used USB ports on the PS2 and not Propriatry USB Ports like a certain other console... hmmm

But you do have a point, they like to do their own thing (memory stick comes to mind), but they sometimes do use industry standards.

I thought IBM were going to provide all their Cell tools/infra?

DCharlie, stop being annoying :p.

For the CELL WorkStation project ( remember the picture I showed you ? ) IBM stops at the Hardware and RTOS+Common OS level with all the tools that concern those two levels: havign designed the architecture ( mainly ) and the programming model they left the Middleware and Application layers to SCE for that project.

IBM has done quite a lot of Research on CELL's software, libraries to help the compiler ( debugging, over-lay generation, shared global data use ) work with the APUs, basically abstracting the Hardware as much as possible and taking care of load balancing ( this is the OS's task ).

And even i am moderately surprised

DirectX10 was probably finished a long time ago, but they're waiting for Longhorn (avalon) to release it to the public.

Either way, I think it's a bit arrogant, but I'd like to see them try though. If only to watch Sony burn to ashes :D

Arrogant ? Is the only possibility to roll over and adopt DirectX ?

They want something like DirectX for their consoles, they are not trying to compete with DirectX on the PC.

A lot of DirectX complexity on the PC platform resides in the fact that the PC architecture is way too open: Sony is only looking to do something for their own consoles ( according to developers the work they have done with the OpenGL like PSP Rendering APIs was very well done ), a high-level Graphics, Audio, I/O and Networking, etc... set of tools for developers.

Sorry if they are trying to make developers' work easier.

You know that licensing DirectX is not a viable option and you know that they cannot just leave a bare-bone low level solution like they did initially with PlayStation 2.

What do you want them to do ?

Darn Sony, they refuse to die.. roll over and let Microsoft dominate... what insolence, what arrogance.
