Story-wise, DOOM Eternal Has The Worst Main Antagonist (Spoilers)

Darkmakaimura

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
As per the title, the last DLC in DOOM Eternal reveals what is supposedly the Supreme Being.... a guy with red eyes who looks like Doomguy in a power suit.

What!? We're supposed to believe this dude is the ruler of Hell and creator of all life and dimensions? Unless I got it wrong, this is probably the most lamest antagonist as far as story or lore goes in any game so far.

What does G-d need with a stars.... power suit?

Hugo Martin later said that Davoth is a Primordial and creator of Hell but not the main universe and others.

Apparently there are other Gods like him.

I still think it's shit. The Doom 2016 Lore was better.

DOOM was better when the story was a small handful of screens of text. I actually remember reading a DOOM book as a kid and thinking it was the coolest thing ever.

I bet it's shit if I read it now.

Lol, yeah, probably this novel isn't exactly Dostojewski or Pynchon.

I remember just skipping most of it. The little I interacted with was pure fan service, from some woman fingering herself via radio while talking about the DOOMSLAYAH to the antagonist telling me about my long lost bunny. Shit was crazy, crazy bad.

Thankfully the gameplay was pure adrenaline, even more so with that fucking music. Man I love that game.

Lmao what the hell, didn't knew this was a thing. I need to check it out, apparently there are 4 books in this style.

Tradition action hero. Blue collar guy, maybe a bit of an idiot. Likeable. Great one liners. Millennial action hero. Blah blah blah epic archetype blah blah blah hero of a billion stories blah blah blah an aspect of an ancient Lovecraftian god blah blah blah totally just an unlikeable idiot with bad one liners.

Hugo Martin let the success of Doom 2016 go straight to his head. He keeps trying to one-up himself, but the concept of Doom can only be stretched so far until it becomes unrecognizable.

the Doom games have a story?
Work was done on the story with Dark Ages.

There's a complete story here, the cinematics, the cutscenes are great and I was very impressed by the graphics, the beasts you slay, the environments were good.

2016/Eternal will a little loosely goosey on story, somehow I don't even remember the story in Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal.

Wasn't original Doom a marine who stepped into a portal to hell?

And then 2016 made him some ancient guardian that is destined to stop hell? I remember he was revived by that robot who manipulated him.

Doom 2016 had it right when a computer begins dropping lore and Doomguy punches the monitor and shuts it up.

Just give me big monsters to kill.

I was baffled at seeing characters and cutscenes in Eternal. I thought 2016 made a good Doom-like statement when he punched the monitor. The game doesn't need characters, just sprinkle in some world building into the level design and let me kill shit.

Just one of the reasons it's still the best of the new trilogy

Is that the bizarre novel where the author has doom guy being a Mad Max-ish type roaming Earth with a shit ton of injected mormon lore?

TBH Doom Guy was better when he crashed out over his dead rabbit and decided to give hell what it deserved (rightfully so)

I think that's the 2nd book, Hell on Earth (there are 4 books), I read them when they came out and 1 was pretty faithful to the original Doom 1 levels, oddly enough. 2 went a little off the rails with the story and 3 and 4 I don't remember much of other than alien (not demon) species being involved.

Yeah it was pretty shit (mostly the DLCs), but the gameplay was great. That's why I played through it multiple times. Dark Ages however I couldn't even finish once, due to shit story AND shit gameplay.

The original Doom and Doom 2016 are the greatest entries in the series.

The franchise wouldn't lose value if you deleted the rest.

That's what I thought too, on Mars or something?

I don't really think the story should have ever been more than that honestly. A portal, demons/monsters start coming through, put an end to that shit. The end.

Oh I skipped all those cutscenes and ignored the dialogue. All I needed to know was that monsters from hell invaded earth and I needed to kill them all. Same with Doom 2016 and Dark Ages. All of them are amazing games with terrible stories.

The Story in Doom Eternal is apparently about epilepsy.
Thats the only thing I can deduce from the incessant kaleidoscope of coloured bullshit, burning your retinas

Doom 2016 story was the only "new" Doom story which was good.
Eternal was a bunch of gibberish.
TDA was just straight up bad.

The Doom 2016 intro told you everything you needed to know. The Doom Slayer smashing the screen trying to tell him what to do was peak Doom storytelling.
