Stranglehold PS3 NOT region-free?

It's rather a (stupid) software limitation, it seems...

I know that some PAL games don't work on NTSC consoles in SD (PAL-encoded videos won't even work in HD if I'm not mistaken). Edit : for example, PAL DVD don't work with NTSC consoles, even if DVD-region is accepted.

Are you sure that there's NTSC games that don't work on PAL consoles in SD, though ? Never heard anything about this...

Not sure about it, but I don't run SDTV. I just know that game companies aren't required to make the SD portion of it compatible with all region PS3s.

<Aaron> Man, I sure want to play that game, too bad its not being released in my region. Oh, wait, PS3 is region free! Let me simply import the shiznit!</Aaron>

* Aaron orders game from www.playasia.com.
* Game arrives from playasia
* Aaron slides game into PS3.
* Aaron sees the error message "PWN3d B307cH" on his HDTV
* Aaron SMASH

Heh. I was a big import nut on the PS2, but the PS3 seems to be getting a lot of global coverage with not many games being left behind, so I was honestly wondering if the regionless still actually mattered, but I've been well corrected on this issue here. Paying more for an edited version of a game = ugh. That's a raw deal.

Where do you live? If you live in a PAL region, region-free is a huge deal as a hardcore gamer.

Do we know if the Hard Boiled part of the disc is actually a Blu-ray movie (meaning it would play in any BD player) or just the movie in HD that can only be played back in the PS3? I'd be curious to see how the PS3 handles it - does the disc show up under both the video and game section of the XMB?

In any case I'm suddenly glad I imported my PS3 from the US. Nobody likes us PAL people :(

That would be incorrect, this is an HD version of Hard Boiled.

I'm still more inclined to believe that the mod is retarded and got his consoles mixed up. There is no way that the 360 version is region free and the PS3 version is not.
thats my problem. The Mod said that he asked and confirmed that the Xbos Version is Region free and both PS3 version not. But i dont see the sense in this act. This is totally retarded.

I'll believe it when I see it. I have a feeling the game will be region free in the end, but we'll see...

Its totally strange with the Ps3 special edition.

The special edition will have 2 discs one is the game and the other one is the movie. Thats still ok. But now both are region locked 1 and you cant play the Movie on a regular player only on PS3:lol :lol :lol

The 360 CE is 2 discs and has no movie.

The PS3 CE is 1 disc, yay extra space.

That might not be true as they could just put the movie on a separate disc and not have to worry about getting it to play in only Region A. On the other hand, if it is on one disc it might be why the disc is supposedly region locked in the first place.

Did Perrin Kaplan go to work at Midway?

It makes sense with the movie being included but it doesn't make sense for the standard version. They're just wasting their time and money region-locking it.

BTW, the movie is a remastered HD version of the film and it will be on the same disc.

Well, if it's one two disc - one the region free game, and one the region locked movie - that would still be pointless for Europeans to import the CE as the movie wouldn't play on a European PS3 anyway. Might as well just get the regular edition (assuming they haven't somehow locked that also).

If it's one disc, then yeah I can see why they would region lock the whole thing.

Stupid regioning.

It was confirmed a while back that it would be on one disc due to the space a BluRay disc has.

If the game can fit on a regular DVD, then you'll have about 40gigs left for the movie.

This is a little bit naive, it's not that simple. To compensate the lower data transfer rate of the PS3's 2x Blu-Ray drive compared to 360's 12x DVD drive, game data might have to be put multiple times and/or in uncompressed format on the Blu-Ray. So it's very likely that the game will require more space on Blu-Ray than on DVD9.

However, there'll be enough space left for the HD movie anyway.

It's not that simple either.

CAV vs. CLV (wikipedia is your friend): Blu-Ray has a constant read speed over the entire space of the disc. DVD has faster read rates on the outside edges than 2X Blu-Ray and slower on the inside edges.

Also, dual layer DVDs can only be read at 8X on the 360.

The point is, most PAL SD TV's nowadays accept NTSC signals and resolution. So even if the game doesn't support 576i and outputs at NTSC 480i, most PAL TV's will still play it with no problems.

It doesn't sound like a technical issue to me.

Wouldn't that mean it would make the loading even longer, seeing as uncompressed data is larger? If anything I would expect the PS3 version to use higher compression, as they could use some of that extra CPU power Cell has to decompress it quicker than the 360 might be able to.

This is really bad news, I expected Sony would enforce not having a regional protection on games. Overcomplicating a global market with old rules about regions and stupidities that make no sense in the internet era should finish, the sooner the better.

I wanted to buy the collector edition of the game, if this is true I won´t do. Maybe is irrelevant for Midway, but is not irrelevant for me.

It's likely using the new Dragon Dynasty transfer, which is all messed up in comparison to the Criterion. Sure having it in HD is nice, but not if it's all zoomed in and cropped like the new DVD release.

Makes sense with the movie being included and all

Wasn't it already confirmed this is an all new transfer?

The Dragon Dynasty release is an ALL NEW transfer, but it's shit. They wouldn't do two completely different transfers for releases of the movie that are just a couple months apart.

http://twitchfilm.net/site/view/a-look-at-the-dragon-dynasty-hard-boiled-dvd/

There are reports out there that the image had been cropped very slightly then subsequently stretched back out to the correct ratio which results in a slight distortion of the image. Viewing this version on its own it isn’t an alteration that I noticed but when comparing screen images from other releases there clearly is a slight stretch.

And no, you DO NOT have to do two different transfers for DVD/HD. Normally they do a new 1080p HD transfer and just down convert it for the SD DVD. 90% of the catalog titles on HD-DVD/Blu-Ray right now are using the new 1080p HD transfers the studios did for their most recent Special Edition DVD releases of the movie.

"Thank you for contacting Midway Tech/Customer Support. Please see
below for details about your inquiry to Midway.

Both PS3 versions will be region free. The 360 version has not been
decided upon as yet, however the 360 collectors edition will include the
movie Hard Boiled on DVD. This DVD may be region locked."

videogamesplus.ca asked Midway support and got that answer. Hard Boiled on DVD huh? Something is wrong as there was only Stranglehold related content on the 360 CE as noted here http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=117768

Good news, hopefully that is the end of that.
But I doubt it

As far as transfer speeds are concerned, you would WANT compressed data.

When the disc read speed is the bottleneck; you can compress the data so that it unpacks just slightly faster than the disc reads. Of course, it's probably less compressed then that, but still, you get my point.

360 LE getting a DVD version of Hard Boiled is news to me. Never heard of this...I call this "customer support" response bullshit.

Yeah I call shens on this response honestly, the dvd would have been well known about by now.
Reminds me that I still haven't received my damned comic book for preordering :lol

While ur at it, dont forget to tell people that Bluray's 2x = DVD's 6.5x, and that 360's transfer is 8x.

Thats totally not true because only the PS3 version gets the movie. I guess Midway has some terible intern information problems^^

an 8X CAV DVD drive will read the edge of the disk at 8x, but wiill read the innermost area of the disk as slowly as 3x DVD speed (4MB/s), than half the speed of a 2x CLV BR drive

its totally clear now both PS3 Versions will be regionfree.^^

Midway has decided to make both the standard version and the North American Collector's Edition (with Hard Boiled on Blu-ray)of Stranglehold region free. Please be clear that the Collector's Edition with the movie is only available in North America, so if you live elsewhere, you'll have to buy it as an import.

I guess the higher ups do listen to you guys on the forums!

Guess i will buy UT3 too then^^

If your console is Japanese though ... you get gimped games at times. The games are coded to see what region your system is ... and then remove blood, decapitations, etc. :lol

sadly, I'm NOT kidding >_<
