the ds proves western developers have ambition

No, it really just proves that Western devs don't like developing for the DS.

And are you serious about the 'imagination' thing? For every great DS game that uses the touch-screen/mike/whatever imaginatively, there's a great DS game that uses standard controls and screens.

I think Talamatross is probably more correct - it's mostly just an arrogant statement, which is bad enough.

Yup. Or simply people not expressing themselve right or with the right words.
I think discussing about each market tendencies and styles would be more interesting...

publishers are scared to take risks. even though the investment is pretty small, publishers still see it as a risk.

Also outside of Nintendogs, New Super Mario Bros, Brain Age, and Yoshi Island 2, are there really any 'huge' DS games. EBA is a cult fav, but is it huge?

Games on the DS don't have to be huge though, that's the thing. Also, putting actual effort into the software greatens the chance for that game to be huge.

You seem to be making the assumption that Western publishers are smart enough to put two and two together. Seriously, watching this industry, Western devs make dumber business decisions than SEGA most of the time... that says something.

Western developers have created some of the most important genres and game concepts that exist today.

Why are they not creating them on the DS? Because the DS is a platform that lends itself to the eccentric rather than the ambitious.

Exactly. Also they dont have enought artistic skill to get away with low polygon games. Of course there are a few exceptions but it seems to be the case.

Then they can make it 2D? Who on earth would mind?

Ironic, then, that the best game for the Nintendo DS is Age of Empires.

Except for the part where it's, y'know, not.

well maybe but they just aren't utilizing the quirkiness of the nintendo ds

i mean where are the quirky classics like ouendan and ouendan for roundeyes

You know most "unprotected" GAFers would get banned for comments like this.

Western developers are too conservative. They prefer gradual change and easy dollars to high risks and moving the industry forward. Eastern devs usually lead the way, while Western devs 'refine' their creations. Even the 360, as a piece of hardware, is mostly a refinement of previous consoles. That's the way most industries work; someone leads and someone else follows. It's the American way. ;)

What isn't ambitious about A Wonderful Life or DQIX?

Not that I agree with the OP, but what you said doesn't make any sense. It can be rearranged to "Western third-party support is lacking because western third-party support is lacking."

Not really...I just mean that the Western third-party games that HAVE been released on the DS haven't done all that well.

:lol

You should fix that to read that Japanese devs generally prefer no change and refining things until somethign forces them to reinvent the market or a little thing catches on like wildfire. Then they refine that ad nausium until the cycle starts over again.
