Big Finish proudly presents John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood - an all new series of audio dramas based on the fantastic Doctor Who spin-off series.

Torchwood, the intrepid team of alien investigators, returns in a series of six audio productions, as part of a licensing deal with BBC Worldwide.

Once again, the Torchwood team will be led by the irrepressible Captain Jack, as played by John Barrowman - who broke the news of the series return on his radio show on Sunday evening.

Conceived as a spin-off from Doctor Who, Torchwood was created by Russell T Davies (Doctor Who, Cucumber, Banana, Queer as Folk) and made its debut on television in 2006. The top secret organisation Torchwood saved Cardiff (and often the world) from alien menaces and terrifying forces, trying to keep the city safe from the inter-dimensional rift that ran through it. In charge of Torchwood was Captain Jack, a man who has been called: “A companion to the Doctor, a rogue Time Agent, an immortal, a dangerous con-man, and very good at parties.” Captain Jack can't be exterminated or trusted, and there's just no stopping him.

The new series of audio dramas will each focus on different members of the Torchwood team, exploring the impact that a mysterious event has on them. Starting off the range will be John Barrowman, who stars in The Conspiracy, a deadly thriller by David Llewellyn, which is released September 2015.

Torchwood creator Russell T Davies says: “Torchwood has been to the Moon, and America, and the Himalayas, but now I think it's finally coming home, to the brilliance of Big Finish."

“What's great about Torchwood is that it is as unstoppable as Captain Jack and just as persuasive,” says producer James Goss. “Torchwood has been a ratings success on nearly every BBC channel, and it's one of the few UK series to translate to America. It's already been a series of iPlayer-topping audio plays, and we are thrilled to continue it. It’s just so exciting to be starting off the range with a drama starring John Barrowman – he leapt at the chance to display a whole new side to Captain Jack.”

Executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery says: “It's fantastic that we will be bringing Captain Jack back to life (for perhaps the thousandth time!) with Big Finish. There are many new Torchwood tales to be told and I can't wait for Jack and his team to defend the Earth once again. I am very grateful for the continuing faith that both the BBC and Russell T Davies have shown in us and very excited to enter into a new world for Big Finish.”

Executive producer Nicholas Briggs says: “Torchwood is something we’ve wanted to do for ages. It has great characters and there are many stories to be told. Our mission is to bring a whole new series of dramatic adventures to life. We’re starting off with these more intimate, focused releases and will then move on to bigger casts and even wider scope. We’re very much looking forward to working with all the cast and it’s been such a pleasure liaising with Russell T Davies about this. He couldn’t have been more supportive and helpful. Our Torchwood producer, James Goss, has really hit the ground running and his tangible enthusiasm is already proving rather an inspiration to us.”

Additional cast members for the series will be revealed later.

Torchwood: The Conspiracy will be released in September 2015, with the remaining five instalments following monthly from January 2016.

You can pre-order all six release now, both individually, or as part of a subscription.

Series synopsis...

Captain Jack [REDACTED] has always had his suspicions about [REDACTED]. And now [REDACTED] is also [REDACTED] about [REDACTED]. Apparently the world really is under the control of [REDACTED]. That's what [REDACTED] says. [REDACTED] have died, disasters have been [REDACTED], the [REDACTED] have disappeared.
It's outrageous. Only [REDACTED] knows that [REDACTED] is right. [REDACTED] has arrived.

Interesting. I've watched all of new Who, and still haven't tried the waters of Torchwood. I think it is still on Netflix? Maybe I'll give the show a go finally.

I never watched much of Torchwood proper, but I heard Children of Earth was fucking amazing. Is it possible to watch it without watching the rest of the show?

Eh...it's mostly pretty bad. Season three is great throughout, but you can count the good episodes of each other season on one hand.

I'll never forget the Cyberwoman episode. Maybe the worst television of all time. Torchwood was a guilty pleasure before Miracle Day thought.

Glad to see Big Finish finally has the rights to do Torchwood. I'll be looking forward to these. And with this and UNIT, I feel like new Who must be just around the corner.

Yes, but since it's a direct sequel to the normal series, there'll be massive spoilers off the bat. And after CoE, don't watch Miracle Day. It's... don't watch it.

We should really think about a Big Finish OT. Its unparalleled what they've done imo.
Anyway glad to hear Torchwood survives.

I thought this was dead and burred.

The concept of an audio drama sounds weak, but I'll probably listen to it.

Nice to hear. Captain Jack is probably one of NuWho's best characters and it will be great to see what Big Finish can do with him. I think the two series suit each other, since BF isn't afraid to go incredibly dark when it needs to (Scherzo and Night Thoughts scared the crap out of me when I first listened to them).

Hopefully, some Big Finish audios starring the NuWho Doctors will come up soon. You know Tennant will immediately sign on, considering that he appeared in BF before he was even cast as the Doctor (as a Nazi, strangely enough), and is a huge DW and BF fanboy. I'm also guessing Capaldi will sign on for similar reasons if they eventually do it. I agree with Kuwabara that with this and UNIT, I wouldn't be surprised if they get the license for NuWho.

The audio drama's Big Finish has already done for Doctor Who are very good, and they've also written some of the greatest Doctor Who stories ever (Chimes of Midnight, Jubilee, Seasons of Fear, UNIT: Dominion, and Lucie Miller/To the Death being some examples). Their quality often eclipses that of the show itself, as they aren't constrained by some of the requirements given to the new show. They don't have to have a monster every episode, and thus have done some pure historicals. They also aren't afraid to do dark or high concept stories (The Natural History of Fear being a great example of the latter), and they always get the original actors back.

Because of Big Finish, the 8th Doctor, Paul McGann, is probably my favourite doctor, as he does fantastically in the audios, and gets some great stories and companions as well.

Could be great but please be set prior to Miracle Day. I don't think I want bloody immortal Rex Matheson running around. Actually, make it prior pretty much everything in S2. I'd love the original team to come back.

If not it'd be awesome if this tied in with the UNIT and Kate Stewart stuff. Torchwood could do with someone to take charge and not let everyone die immediately.

There's been Torchwood audio dramas available already, and unfortunately they're not very good. And Barrowman in particular turned in some pretty shit performances in them. Myles and David-Lloyd did decent jobs, though. Then again, those earlier dramas weren't done by Big Finish, so I'm hopeful and curious but I'll definitely want to hear a sample or something first before I decide to buy in.

Someone did start an OT for the audio dramas awhile back, but it died off pretty quickly.

Here's the link.
