XSEED Games Bringing Artistic RPG, Unchained Blades, to Nintendo 3DS™ on January 3, 2013
Dungeon-Crawling RPG Adventure Prepares for Release on Nintendo eShop

Torrance, Calif., (December 14th, 2012) - – XSEED Games, an independent-minded publisher, is pleased to announce today that the dungeon-crawling RPG title, Unchained Blades, will be released in North America on January 3rd, 2012 for the Nintendo 3DS™ hand-held system as a digital download title on the Nintendo eShop at a price of $29.99.

Released in Japan as UnchainBlades ReXX and developed by FuRyu, Unchained Blades is a role-playing game that utilizes a first-person perspective and is set in a monster-filled world. The game was directed by Toshio Akashi of the Lunar series, while the game’s story was penned by Grandia series veteran Takashi Hino.

Unchained Blades follows the story of the vengeful Dragon Emperor named Fang. After being stripped of his powers by the goddess Clunea, Fang embarks on a journey for revenge, hoping to regain his true form. Along the way, Fang is joined on his quest by a cowardly golem prince, a shy medusa priestess, a young phoenix clan maiden, and many other mythical beings seeking to meet with the goddess.

Boasting a veritable who’s who of famous Japanese artists, Unchained Blades represents a collaboration between some of the best talent in the industry. The main character Fang was designed by Pako, most famous for his work on the Shining Force series, while other characters were fashioned by artists such as Toshiyuki Kubooka (Lunar), Shinichiro Otsuka (Summon Night), and Kazushi Hagiwara (Bastard!!), to name a few.

In Unchained Blades, players journey through the game with a party of up to four characters, moving through dungeons in a first-person perspective and engaging in turn-based combat along the way. The game features a unique “Unchain” system, which enables players to try and convince monsters to follow them and help them on their quest. If an enemy monster is successfully “Unchained,” that monster will then join the player’s party and help them in the future by blocking attacks or supplying players with special offensive abilities. Each character in the player’s four person party can hold up to four “unchained” creatures, ensuring plenty of combat variety. The game has also been completely redubbed with new English voice-overs and boasts over 60 hours of gameplay.

Developed by FuRyu and published by XSEED Games in North America, Unchained Blades will release as a digital download on the Nintendo 3DS on January 3rd, 2013. For more information, check out the game’s website at www.unchainedblades.com.

Hope the bring it out in europe. There usually quite good about doing DD releases in Europe when a publisher doesn't pick a game up.

Great news! It'll be a day one download for me. It's a real shame that XSEED wasn't able to get more of buffer in between their release and Etrian Odyssey IV, I hope it doesn't hurt their sales too much.

I-is that lead character wearing some sort of Joan Rivers pants suit?

And why is there a frying pan hanging from where a necktie is supposed to be?

They probably could have gone with $20, given how long it's been out for PSP and how close it is releasing to The King.

Still, I'm glad I waited for this version and will probably get it.

This isn't a budget game. I think you'll see it's worth $30 when people play it.

You, uh, do realize EOIV will be the same price if not more...
I imagine EOIV will be $40. It's also from a franchise that I trust and will probably be worth $10 more. Not saying Unchained Blades won't be good but they missed their mark, (with me at least) I can wait a little longer for what will be a better game.

Given how I'm easily burned by dungeon crawlers, there's no way I'm buying this within 6 months of EOIV. But considering it's an eShop release, I might buy it in the end!

I was going to pick this up for an EO fix considering it was supposed to launch earlier in the year, but... hm. How is the game, anyway? Is it supposed to be good, or just okay? Then again, I managed to enjoy myself enough with Dark Spire, and I'd imagine this probably would be at least a bit more enjoyable than that...

IMO, Dark Spire is better, but UB is more traditional... and also has a lot more extraneous mechanics.

You have unique characters with skill trees in UB, not make-your-owns.

it's a very good game, buy it. if i had to choose between EO IV and UB, i'd try UB first.

try something new once in a while.

Indeed, I hope the 3DS version does well.

Maybe if something like this can have a life on the eShop, maybe we can get a 3DS Shiren the Wanderer.

shiren is another game i'd like to see coming back one day. i would even play it on some ugly phone or browser while grinding my teeth.

No thanks XSeed. You took way too long and it's about $10 too expensive. I'll just wait two months and download EOIV.

Good choice. Unchained Blades is an average dungeon crawler with awful JRPG characters/story and a ton of bloat added to give it the appearance of depth. The Etrian Odyssey series is much better.

You, uh, do realize EOIV will be the same price if not more...

Except EOIV will be a brand new game for NA, not a seven month old game, as UB will be upon its 3DS release. And UB isn't even all that good. If the previous three EO titles are anything to go by, IV will be vastly superior to UB in just about every way.

There were like three or four more on the DS that we never got.

And if you're willing to play on phones, iOS has a good amount of decent roguelikes.

I just finished spending the last of the thirty bucks I had on the 3DS shop for this game on Crimson Shroud yesterday.

Being right after Chrismtas though means I'll probably have points cards out the wazoo though and it'll be a decent warmup for EO IV. So I'm back in.

Next time don't announce it so early XSEED!
