We have 6TB hard drives now. Neat. (7 platters, 3.5" form, filled with helium, porn*)

Nice. My 3TB has less than 1TB on it these days and there's not much left I can easily remove from it anymore. I'm somewhat of a data hoarder I guess. I'm saving a lot from the internet for faster access and for those dark few days where my internet is down so I have something to watch or whatever. :p

I remember people saying anything two or over tended to be rather unstable and prone to failing. Was that something people simply said and had no basis in reality.

Yeah I remember this. I heard people say things like how they were so unreliable that you could only make a complete 3TB copy of them/to them a few times before they would crap out. Never had any problems with my WDC Green 3TB even though I read after I bought it that it was pretty unstable. I did change the sleep time on it to 5 minutes of inactivity instead of 8 seconds though... That was a weird default setting for an HDD meant for a stationary computer. Obviously to save energy, but they said that since it had to spin up so often it would wear out really quickly. I've had it for around 2 years now and it's been running 24/7 ever since basically.

My father bought two 3TB drives of different brands to put in his file server and had them both fail after a short while though. But that turned out to be because of the shitty no-name budget PSU he bought crapping out after some years of use, as they tend to do. Once I put in a new Corsair PSU those discs spun up like champs and has been going ever since.

Knock on wood.

Is there a time table for how quickly we went from MB to GB to TB? I can't help but feel like we should be at way more than 6TB right now.

Both of my 1TB HDDs are full and I've got an external 1TB which is a backup which is also full. I need bigger HDDs.
