When the third pillar becomes the second

I've been wondering for a while, the GBA has been on the market for a while, and I think it's time nintendo shows it's succesor.

All would have been well, with a PSP-type powerfull GBA2 with nice 3D graphics, but.... the DS announced by nintendo as their third pillar is killing everything sales-wise.

So I'm guessing we'll never see a new GameBoy, probably the next nintendo handheld will be the DS2 ( or whatever they call it ), meaning it will have touch screen and 2 screens, since probably nintendo will make it backward compatible with the DS, like they've always done with their handhelds.

So, what do you guys think nintendo will do with their next handheld? and about the 3 nintendo pillars?
 
I guess Nintendo could do something entirely different as a new third pillar - like a 'portable VC' that only has flash memory and downloads games from a Wii, kind of like a VMU or Pcoketstation but less crappy.
I would buy it
 
I'd expect similar incremental upgrades to the DS ala the Gameboy for the next ?? years. It's already started with the slimmer design.
 
Third pillar theory is really just to cover themselves from embarrassment in case DS's success is not so great.

With them saying "third pillar", it was safe because third pillar can range from anything around the level of success GBA was having, or the level of "failure" that GameCube was suffering.

Obviously it has proven to be a success. I am sure Nintendo is happy to just live off two pillars. There really isn't enough market for another GBA2 at the moment.

Maybe another 3-5 years down the road this will change. But for now, I am sure Nintendo is content with what they have.

the 'three pillars' talk was just to give them an out in case ds didn't succeed. that's all. since it did, the gameboy line is dead.
 
I'm happy with DS as it is. I'm glad it doesn't have nice 3d graphics, because it means I'm still able to play beautiful 2d games. The DS will be the last handheld I'll buy, it's all downhill from here. If I want fancy 3d I'll play a home console.

which basically means, why do you have to rub our PR spin in our face even after our DS success?

Nintendo hardly has to rush out with the next DS. The longer the current machine is supported, the better. Millions of people have one, compared to the fresh start they'd have to give a new machine - which the non-gamers who already bought a DS might not be particularly interested in upgrading to when the DS is more than suitable for them.

Besides, with games like FFIV, Dragon Quest 9 and the DQ remakes on the way, DS is only just warming up over there.

Perhaps more "real" game inclined Western players are gagging for a DS with Gamecube-level visuals, but I'd bet Nintendo isn't particularly concerned with that right now. After all, Sony's PSP is perfectly adequate for those of us who want a traditional-yet-pretty games experience.

I'd not be surprised if the DS ended up outliving the lifespan of the pre-Advance Gameboy line.
 
Gameboy brand isn't dead but I don't think we're going to get our traditional gameboy anymore. Something like GameboyDS or something. Imagine it..

Tommy:"Hey did you hear! Gameboy and NintendoDS are coming together to make GameboyDS!"
Timmy:"Woah! Who would've thought that Gameboy and Nintendo DS would team up!"
Timmy+Tommy:"MUM!!!!"
 
Oh for god sakes, that "third pillar" stuff was just PR bullshit trying to be safe about the DS back when people were unsure of it's success.

THERE WON'T BE A THIRD HANDHELD, THE GAMEBOY IS FOREVER DEAD.

The Wii is just starting it's engine.

But anyway, if Nintendo is very successful at really expanding the market, Nintendo could start releasing two handhelds if the PSP starts selling games and hardware don't whittle off.

didn't the gameboy continue to sell like hotcakes in US even while the DS was mudering everything?

sounds like a 3rd pillar to me.

the devil is in the details. what happened to nintendo's support of gba once the ds started rolling? i mean, it should have been fairly obvious to anyone as soon as it was revealed that ds would play gba games. the ds was always the successor unless it bombed, in which case it was always just a trial balloon.

Just a question....Why? Why do Nintendo need to annonuce any new handheld right now, the DS is into middle age and is still selling like gangbusters, we are 2, maybe 3 years away from the successor to DS, and to be honest, I'm not complaining at all, the DS is a great console that has deserved its success.
 
Do people really not get this? The GBA line has been retired. It's done.

As everyone here is saying, third pillar was just a face saving statement.

Let the Game Boy retire in peace.

It is, it reeks of past and children, the DS has an aura of both fun and seriousness, the DS is acceptable for any and everyone from timmy to his grandfather, the Gameboy isn't.

Seriously, the gameboy brand is dead, it's gone, don't wait for a Gameboy Next, he DS is the gameboy next.

It continues to sell better than the PS3, but that's not, you know, saying much.

It's like the PS2. Good hardware, good software, has a hard time dying. But it'll die eventually, the US is the only place where it still somewhat survives despite the DS onslaught.

In a few years we'll see a new DS, maybe just a hardware upgrade (say to PSP-like screen resolution and the power to match, but probably less), maybe with some more innovation, but you won't see a new gameboy.

Im not waiting for the next Gameboy, im just saying that if Nintendo wanted to use it again, its there.

They don't have a reason to use it:

* the DS brand and "touch generation" brand are fare superior in every aspect to the Gameboy brand, apart from history, and even history isn't always an asset.

* a gameboy would be a concurrent to the DS, and would fragment the handheld marketspace (between incompatible Gameboy and DS lines), which definitely isn't a nintendoish strategy

* branding a gameboy "gameboy" would mean getting back in the "gameboy" line of innovationless simple power upgrades (or it's not a gameboy, and you don't want to attach the gameboy's past to it, see DS), straying from the innovative paths Nintendo is looking for right now.

Successful companies understand when a product name has outlived it's usefulness.
 
Next year Nintendo will announce a handeld capable of playing Virtual Console games, sharing them with the Wii and able to access the Wii Shop. Maybe there will be some dedicated new games for the device, with something similar to Wii Ware. I want to believe.

And has firmware updates. BTW just adding on to your Wii Ware idea..Nintendo needs to release a game maker or something on a cart and sell it for 39.99 and let us make games and upload it to Wi-fi where only the top 10 every week gets through.
 
The title of this thread should be:

"When the third pillar is just some good PR from Nintendo to sell you the DS without prematurally kill the GBA sales and that it actually work because people still think it exist or that it means something + they even make a thread about it years later"

Too bad that it's too long. :P

Maybe it should be a Wii Channel. That would be awesome.
