It's always been a thing, but the recent influx over the last decade of theater kid-like people, the crossover with romantasy readership, gaming tourists, and the weird fetishes in some modern tabletop communities....has definitely made it more cringe.
Personally blame Tumblr banning porn the most, as it spread these people like a virus to other places where they're loud. Probably other stuff too, but tumblr has always had the worst people with this stuff.

I think this was never a big thing until seventh gen BioWare games (Mass Effect and Dragon Age). Yeah, The Witcher 1 was released on 2007, but I think most of this fixation began within modern BioWare fans.

No1 is fixated on that, just its simply pretty realistic, if u are white wolf geralt, aka perfect combo of supernatural physical specimen of a man with powers that could bring down kingdoms.
On top u are only witcher in existence who can actually feel deeply( aka dream of basically every woman, combo of that masculine brute and delicate gigolo) u gonna slay mad bitches of highest quality, hell he cant even have children which means no need to wrap shit up- even more reason to fuck around coz it will be way more pleasure for the bloke, and on top of all that he barely ages, for example in w3 he is close to 100yo and still look perfectly acceptable to pull young tight chicks in their early 20s(vesemir is old af around 200-300yo and only then u could see actual proper signs of witcher aging)

It's crazy the people who like this the most are usually also the types to support uglifyimg the chicks and censoring things like the sex cards from the Witcher. You would think these types would be for it and would want attractive people but no. Weird.

Convincing themselves they are righteous and forcing their beliefs on others is more important to them than having fun.
I like romance if it is like FFX with Tidus and Yuna, but in general, if it is like a Bioware game then I feel the game would be better without it. This is even if Bioware did not suck ass at it. No options, just one story.
Also, if I really want to see some video game nudity, I know about rule34 and other places.
Tidus and Yuna really made the ending of FFX great. edit - And the music, so very good.

I think it's as simple as your character being sexually appealing and getting the girl/dude that they want is just another part of the power fantasy for some.
Personally I've never really cared much about it, I saw it as fun bonus feature in games like Mass Effect but if some new RPG has no romance options it's pretty much irrelevant to me.
Also, I kinda liked it better when there were a few pre defined options instead of the modern approach which seems to be "everyone in your party is bisexual and they all want to fuck you"
