Has this been announced before or is it just a Euro announcement?

THQ Inc. (NASDAQ: THQI) today announced an agreement with critically acclaimed development studio Team17 Software Ltd. to publish Worms on the PSPTM portable entertainment system and Nintendo DSTM. Retaining the same award-winning gameplay and unique sense of humour that has epitomised the brand for almost a decade, Worms brings a whole raft of new features and laugh-out-loud comedy to the next generation of handheld entertainment.

"The Worms brand is a huge global phenomenon shipping over 9 million units to date," said Peter Dille, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Marketing, THQ. "The pick-up-and-play gameplay is an ideal formula for the PSP system and Nintendo DS formats and will enable THQ to extend our leadership position in the handheld sector."

"Team17 is excited and delighted to bring Worms to Nintendo DS and the PSP system in conjunction with THQ," said Martyn Brown, Studio Director, Team 17. "Both of these new systems represent exciting new handhelds capable of delivering unique experiences both in single player and using the exciting wireless multiplayer capabilities of the platforms. We are developing incredibly addictive new versions of our classic game for existing fans of the series and newcomers to the world of Worms. It's time to dust off the Holy Hand Grenade and unleash some more exploding sheep!"

3d worms was sadly not a great idea so hard to gauge the strength of shots. make it pretty 2d and it'll be killer on DS.

THQ had the games listed on it's E3 teasersite, but the game was never officially acknowledged as far as I know.

After I reported the two titles, Gamefront et alii picked up the message as well and Team17 decided to add a category on their forums stating that they could not respond to the 'rumours' at that time, but all would be made clear in the future.

Today THQ and Team17 officially announced the games, that's all. :-/

In addition, the Team 17 developers mentioned: "Both the PSP and DS editions will feature classic Worms gameplay - as vociferously requested by our fans. Both versions have been in development for some time, news on release dates will follow much later in the year.

The PSP will utilise 3d background imagery and zooming, full width 16:9 proportions. It looks cute as sin

Both platforms feature ad-hoc wireless play and of course, hot-seat play as well as single player games that suit the play patterns of the devices. I.e. short bursts.

The DS will feature touch-screen use; planned to be finger rather than stylus control to make it better for hot-seat situations. The touch screen will be used for map scrolling, weapon controls and stats.

The gamecode is all new for both editions and not a port of earlier 2d games.

A 3d version of Worms is not currently planned for these devices, for both technical and play-factor reasons bearing in mind their screen resolution and suitability to the original 2d game mechanics."

2D it is. No mention of online mode yet.

Give me online or give me death.

This really needs to be online. Worms DS online would be such a runaway cult hit for the system it wouldn't be funny.

However, I can't see a 2D game as simple as worms really finding a market on the PSP, especially since it'll almost certainly cost $10-$20 more and be harder to control.

But damn could it look good on that screen.

I love Worms. If this is online on DS, insta-sell. Not online? Possible sell.

Edit:

That menu looks weak. Hopefully you won't have to scroll like that for all weapons.

Hell what am I saying, I'll get it on DS, I'll have a touch screen to pick weapons.
