Media Create Sales: Week 7, 2014 (Feb 10 - Feb 16)

3DS is nearing a 50% decline while Vita is nearing a 300% increase. Certainly did not expect this in both cases. Did not expect the 3DS to decline so much and have no idea why the Vita is holding all of a sudden.
I made a pact, but I'm not allowed to talk about it. I regret nothing.

Besides, who needs a soul anyway?

I wonder where can Nintendo go from here.

I can understand the masses not embracing the WiiU but what's going on with the Nintendo diehard, why won't they buy? Did they hate everything on Wii?? Why won't it follow a gamecube trajectory instead of this disaster?

Well, the Wii U doesn't really have a GameCube line up either. Nintendo saw the success of their platformers on the Wii generation and doubled down on them for the Wii U, making a much more uniform line up than they had ever featured before for a console's first year and more.

Of course, because the Wii expanded audience didn't transition here, they aren't actually having success.

my first guess is that gamers are large, nintendo fans or otherwise, don't want outdated hardware, period and that's basically the console's cancer. I guess is up for debate though.

I think that's the reason that third party titles/multiplatforms are a failure in the console, but Nintendo's could have done better if they were actually appealing to their base.

I wonder whether nintendo can release hardware mid-generation that is a suitable companion for the PS4.

It wouldn't do much. By "mid generation", this new console would be no different from the Wii U when it launched.

So anyone think that Nintendo may release a 3DSi this year with better specs until next year where they announce and sell the next generation handheld? I think that sales will be a lot worse next year like 15-30k if it keeps on dropping 50% each year. More troubling is that Vita is selling better than ever and will probably sell more than 3DS next year.

If they gonna release 3DSi with better specs, I hope that they include a second circle pad.

It is going to be painful to watch these Wii U numbers until June...

Donkey Kong did nothing to move hardware. Maybe 3DS is really cannibalizing Nintendo's sales...

More like, Wii U cannibalizing itself for releasing too many platformers in short time frame.

I've played my Vita nonstop over the past two months so I'd like to join Dave's brigade of soul-selling. Where do I sign up to deposit my life force to ensure continual Vita success?

You realize the Wii version of DKC Returns sold over a million copies in Japan, right? It's an extremely popular series in Japan.
On the Wii. Every casual and their dog doesn't own the WiiU.

The GameCube was cheap, had third party support, didn't get games at a glacier pace (many of which are remakes) and was overall a more viable option to the other consoles. With the WiiU you're paying 300$ for pretty much nothing but Nintendo games (most innovative one yet is a 3DS sequel). By this time the GameCube had Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Wind Waker (NA in March) and Ocarine of Time Master Quest, Metroid Prime (Japan in Feb), Animal Crossing and Super Smash Bros Melee. The GameCube looks like the SNES in comparison.

Just fixing the HW won't do anything.

I'm posting this because people keep expressing surprise at the drop in sales when the exact same thing happened with the DS. Let's compare 2007 to 2008 DS for the same week.

Media Create Week 7, 2007: NDS - 136,999
Media Create Week 7, 2008: NDS - 62,362

Like 3DS, DS had two monster years previously and 2008 marked the year where it would hit saturation point (though, DS was of course doing it at a consistently higher level than 3DS) aka settling for 'normal' sales - I think that's the same thing happening with the 3DS here. A drop was inevitable. The kind of sales the 3DS put out the last couple of years are not normal for any hardware to consistently do YoY, for example, 2012 3DS >>>>> any post-2007 year for the DS in Japan. I think a new model isn't the solution because 3DS will never reach those heights, more importantly, I think a strong software schedule is what's needed and that's what kept the DS afloat for years though the market is also a little different now and 3DS doesn't quite have the consistent level of support the DS enjoyed.

DS 2007 : 7 million
DS 2008 : 4 million
DS 2009 : 4 million

I look at things in absolute terms. Lets say 3DS declines just like the DS.

3DS 2013 : 4.8 million
3DS 2014 : 2.74 million

Yes a decline is expected and in relative terms it may not be that bad but in absolute terms I think its quite worrying considering its Nintendo's main money maker.

One japanese store about the PS4. http://azalyn.blog22.fc2.com/

The initial shipment for the store is 3.5 higher than the PS3 launch. Almost completely allocated for pre-orders.

Not many software pre-orders, about half those of hardware. Yakuza Ishin, way ahead; everything else, so-so.

What will it take for Japanese devs to give the Vita more love? It's selling pretty well considering there aren't many releases. With some love it would be doing gangbusters.

Poor Wii U. It was an admittedly unfortunate decision to push yet more platformers onto a system that needs more variety. I love Nintendo but this getting hard to watch.

I really want to cry for Wii U. It is killing some good games under its belt. I really doubt Mario Kart's ability to carry it now.
Vita holding up fine.

If it wasn't worrying when the 3DS wasn't doing as well as DS, even at its highest point then why would it be now? The sales aren't that bad yet. The main worry is that the Western sales aren't picking up which is what propped up the DS when the sales in Japan started to decline. Software sales theoretically is what would keep the system afloat in Japan.

Such a waste to let Retro work on DK. Is that tile even doing well in the west considering the Wii U sales? I doubt it.

Also Smash will most likely not be a big system seller in japan because most people will just get it for the 3DS.

I'm just surprised in how its dropping. I don't see why your acting like its not surprising. Did anyone predict this? I certainly did not.

It's funny, last year people were saying wait for the software to come, yet with every major release the Wii U is looking MORE dead.

Not exactly. The holiday sales were better than most in these threads were expecting. Don't pull the revisionist history bs. But yes, it has since dropped like a rock and the DK first week sales are crap.

Such a waste to let Retro work on DK.

That's what I (and many others) have been saying since the reveal. Sure, it'll be a good game, and a lot of people will really enjoy it. But Nintendo needed one of their big guns elsewhere; NOT producing yet another ultra-"safe" 2D platformer.

It's not like something completely new, outside the box, etc (or Metroid) would have sold much worse...

Man, Donkey Kong slipped and fell flat on its face. It's probably a quality game given all the good to great reviews, but I can't say I blame Japan. That game just can't excite me at all.

Porting DKCR to 3DS can't have helped the fate of Tropical Freeze. Still, I wasn't expecting the title to sell no systems whatsoever.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Depressing numbers across the board, especially DK.

With the consumption tax increase at proximity, I fear sales will suffer even greatly.

Nothing, Smash Bros is the real system seller here, Mario Kart will move like 90k systems, Smash will move 95k lol

Worldwide? maybe.

Such a waste to let Retro work on DK. Is that tile even doing well in the west considering the Wii U sales? I doubt it.

Yeah, Metroid titles are stellar sellers. What is really a waste (from a business perspective) is developing Wii U games.

These figures have now reached the point of making me physically uncomfortable.

Not sure what's going on with the Vita or 3DS, but it's nice to see the Vita maintaining.

Smash will do very little in Japan for the Wii U. Most will just buy it for 3DS.
I still believe the Smash fanbase will "ignore" the 3DS version.
Eh, probably not. Mario Kart is the bigger series, and Smash Bros isn't even an exclusive game.
Mario Kart is bigger on the casual market, and that market is not buying consoles, Smash will move more consoles, I'm sure of it, and I'm an expert :D

I'm just surprised in how its dropping. I don't see why your acting like its not surprising. Did anyone predict this? I certainly did not.

I did! Personally, I think some people were too caught up about 2013 not keeping with 2012 to see that even 2013 was an unusually great year for HW sales. I think the real surprise for me is that Western sales are also following the drop which paints an overall grim picture...but not the Japanese sales in isolation...which is fairly normal.

In its first month, a Yokai Watch “Yokai Medal” toy sold about three million units.

http://gematsu.com/2014/02/yokai-watch-shipments-top-500000-japan

Oh my, so many potential new 3DS owners out there.
The real question here is how long until Level-5 milks this newly acquired cash cow dry?

For a dead system with no new releases, Vita did well. Anticipation for PS4, maybe?

I assumed that might be the case, but this has been holding for 3 weeks now, hasn't it? Edit: Oh I thought the PS4 was out already over there, don't mind me...

WiiU is depressing as all hell. What's left for the chalkboard anyways? Smash, Kart, and... well, I can't even imagine Bayo 2 doing better than DK.

The Wii U is dead, anyone trying to move goalposts can't see clearly.

As for the 3DS, its steep decline must be a huge worry for Nintendo. Ideally, they'd have a new handheld out for Q4 this year, but I think it'll probably be 2015.

Wonder how long they'll wait before showing anything QoL related.
