Trails of Cold Steel (Sen no Kiseki) getting Limited Edition

someone bump this in a week so I remember to pre-order. Working Designs is such a great company... I mean XSEED.

I will add pre-order links to the thread and post them once they go up, if someone doesn't beat me to it.

SC won't be out by the time Cold Steel releases.

I'm curious, Aeana. Just wanted to ask, how are the Cold Steel games compared to Trails in the Sky? I'm not sure I like the 3D visuals, and hope in future they look more like Tokyo Xanadu but that's a minor, so long as it's just as charming an RPG. The whole school setting just worries me slightly.

What's the reception on this game for those who played the JP version? It looks like lots on fun based on the videos I have seen.

It is Falcom's first 3D game so they still have some issues with their 3D engine, but let's drop that and concentrate on the game itself. I love this series, but I also see many issues with this entry.
No spoilers of course :)

First game is quite episodic and functions as an introduction to the empire itself, which has been mentioned by all games earlier in the series. This is btw the first time we get a glimpse of the empire itself.

The story is very formulaic, it goes from Free Time, where you interact with your party members in school, do side quests etc and do a dungeon, then you get the Main Story where you go to different areas of the empire and do several missions, beat a boss go home and repeat.

As a standalone game, it's hollow, the narrative never progresses much, most references will be lost (many are from Zero and Ao) and the antagonists never felt like a threat. The narrative is, as a bonus, extremely slow too and that lasts throughout the game until the last third.

And people who liked Social Links, you have a simplified version of it here. Now people are going to hate me for saying it :(

The gameplay is refined from earlier Trails games, but they have simplified the Orbment System, which makes it function more like the Materia from FFVII. Some say it's better, some say it's worse. All I can say is that it's easier to exploit, making battles very easy.

On its own, it's the weakest entry in the series by far, but that doesn't mean that it's bad. I enjoyed the game for what it is, an introduction to the world for new players to the Trails universe and for what is it, I feel it's worth a purchase.

I sound so negative while I enjoyed most of the game, what is wrong with me. I had a blast!

Aeana, does Cold Steel and Ao/Zero no kiseki have spoilers for SC and 3rd ?

I got the entire series to play, but got stuck in SC. Time constraints.
I have been thinking of starting Zero and get the localized SC later. I am just a little apreehensive since I do not know if zero and ao would spoil SC and 3rd.

Its not really their first 3D game, unless you mean 3D in a different way like camera perspective.

Thought it seemed obvious but I guess not :p Yes I meant their first game on their new 3D engine with a rotatable camera in 3rd person. Too long xD

Will it even be out this year?

It's really hard to tell. I want to think it'll be December/January, but I could easily see it come out as late as like March. It's clear that XSEED wants it done ASAP, but the game isn't being very cooperative.

Cheers. Thanks for the write up. I guess I will skip it since I thought TitS wasn't great until 3/4th of the way through and def did not enjoy Persona 3 & 4 (I know...i know!). The only interesting part was that it has a materia like system.

Thanks again.

If they release the demo, give it a try. It's a lot more enjoyable than what it seemed from my post earlier. Though if you disliked the first Trails and the Personas, I can guess this game was not meant for you :p

Oh man... my one hour impression wasn't off at all.

So it's a Valkyria Chronicles 2 situation...

Cold Steel 2 is one my absolute favorites, Cold Steel 1 is by far my least favorite. If you don't like the school stuff, then it's going to bog down the first half of the game and it'll most likely feel like a chore. It opens up more in the back half, and gets more fun, but it's kind of a too little/too late kind of thing for me. structurally, it's a lot like FC where each chapter functionally resets the tone of the story and you have to once again do missions, etc.

I think I was just really tired of the typical Kiseki first game formula by this point. The school stuff just exacerbated it. Still, it's got rewarding battles and the characters aren't bad, and there's a great story payoff.

The references to the Sky games are minimal in Cold Steel. I think some events are technically "spoiled" but it's done in a way that if you didn't play the game yet then you have no idea what it means. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Now, the games reference Zero/Ao much more directly. especially Ao. However, I am a strong believer that you can play these arcs in any order you want to, and Zero/Ao ended up referencing Cold Steel's events as well. We just didn't know it at the time.

What kind of school stuff does the game have? Is it another Persona 3/4 ripoff?

Thank you very much.

Guess I will start Zero soon then and get back to SC when it launches in english.

I've decided i'm getting into Trails with these games on PS3. I'm probably fucked :(

Is Cold Steel's release date not final? Stores have it listed as Nov 17th.
I've noticed a pattern of stores having placeholder date for niche games (Neptunia for example) everyone saying "its just a placeholder" and then it turns out to be the official date. This game may break the pattern but I always find it amusing to see everyone wrong everytime for some reason lol.

But launching in November is bad. Niche or not that just feels like too much competition even if its not really competing against the big Holiday games.

Anywayz: So from what I've read I can play this without playing the others. I was going to get Trials in the Sky first but if the LE is limited I may go for this first since it seems nice. Got all but one game picked out for end of year so this will be tough.

I would honestly be amazed if that date wasn't final or within a week of said date. October is too swamped as is for niche Japanese games and so far the only potential competition for November (not including Western AAA games) is the next SAO game and Persona (which may not even be November). It will be November when this releases.

I'm conflicted. I like the all digital lifestyle on the Vita but Xseed has put together a good deal here. Guess I'm breaking my rule on the digital only releases for ToCS 1+2.

Oct is worst as it would be against Disgaea 5, Dragon Quest Heroes, Triforce Heroes, and Tales of Zestiria

Man, I guess I'm the odd one out here, I would actually prefer October since I only have Witcher 3 DLC and Yoshi. But I wouldn't mind Nov tbh since I'm only getting FM2016 that month.

Re: SC before or after CS, I think XSEED will launch the former at least a few weeks before the latter regardless of whether they've fixed up all the bugs. It's worth noting that, after the generally haphazard launch of FC relative to how it was being presented by PR, XSEED's neon overly careful when it comes time for SC to release. They showed us the worst bugs and issues just this last blog post, but one of the beta testers commented last week on a Steam forum thread saying the worst is over. I'm hopeful they'll stock to their word and just get it out even if they can't fulfill their internal list of things needing a fix.

That sounds crazy, yet sadly believable, but I'm wondering why you think that.

Because Tom has been saying on their forums that there is a "chance" that SC won't make the cut by the time CS is ready to go. The moment anything bad is said about the localization of SC, is when things seem to actually go bad. This "chance" sounds like more than just a chance when it's been repeated multiple times at this point.

This whole series is like the definition of talking too much when it comes to the localization process. It's nice that they are one of the few companies that actually cares enough to update their fans about how things are going, just the more that's said, the more people expect, which in this case people are expecting more than they should be. It's nice that CS seems to be breaking away from the issues that plagued the start of the series, just those issues don't seem to be letting up when it comes to the earlier games.

Technically, this is not true either -- Falcom has released all-3D third-person games with rotatable cameras in the past (Gurumin and Xanadu Next come to mind).

But it is the first Kiseki game to qualify for that title. Nayuta no Kiseki ALMOST qualifies, but that game uses a fixed camera perspective, so it falls just short. ;)

SC won't be out by the time Cold Steel releases.

Just so you all know, Aeana does not speak for us here. Officially, we still plan to release SC before Cold Steel. We're not going to GUARANTEE that, since you know the second we do, something will catch fire and turn us into liars -- it's the nature of Murphy's Law -- but that is still the plan for the foreseeable future.

...As far as I know, anyway. I've been out at voice-recording for PopoloCrois, so maybe all of that changed in my one-week absence -- but last I heard, that was definitely still the plan, and I see no reason to believe it won't happen.

Unless SC comes out end of September or like first week of October, I'd rather it come out afterward just because I have a lot on my plate game plus life wise. I also don't want to play two Trails games too close to one another as to not be fatigued. Of course, it would be sweet to have two Trails games to play in the same year :p

Tom, I assume the two games will not compromise each other's release dates, correct? Like you guys will not delay CS for any reason related to SC, or vice versa?

This came from "fall 2015" to "holiday 2015". Now I'm starting to think it may end up as "early 2016" before it's all said and done.

I've yet to see a time where they announced a CE for a game and that game didn't release within 2-3 months of said announcement. This is probably the last game anyone should worry about when it comes to whether it will make this year or not.

He'll yeah!! Probably 4 copies. One of each for PSV/3 US/EU!

Really shouldn't but man...Falcom is fucking awesome! Bummer that there is no soundtrack. Been growing to the YS and Celceta tracks for a hour this morning and I'll keep on doing so since I got the rest of the week off.

Thanks for confirming that SC isn't coming out until 2020.
