Any updates?

Uhh ... it's on my list ... yeah, I'll do that soon.

How common do things like this happen? Like retooling units already manufactured or unsold into another product? Have Nintendo and Sony done this in any way? (I can see Sony doing so- as a major electronic manufacturer) If it's common it would explain a lot of the "official reported numbers" vs. actual sales...

32X boards were used in Sega's "Picture Magic" graphics tablet. I don't know if they actually broke down already manufactured 32Xs, or just used excess boards which hadn't yet been assembled into full 32X units.

Commodore manufactured 100,000 C64GS units. After selling only an estimated 15,000 - 17,000 units, they broke up their remaining stocks and re-used the PCBs in standard C64 computers.

Those are just a couple of examples that I'm aware of, I'm sure there's more.

Tiny pictures, but I'm sure that these figures (through September 1997) were from Famitsu cover date "1997.12.26"

There doesn't seem to be any other data included which wasn't included in the French article.

My best guess;

Top Half Japan;

Nintendo:
Super Famicom
Game Boy
Nintendo 64

Sega:
Saturn

Sony:
PlayStation

NEC:
PC-FX

SNK:
Neo Geo
Neo Geo CD

Bottom Half International:

Nintendo:
Super Famicom
Game Boy
Nintendo 64

Sega:
Saturn

Sony:
PlayStation

SNK:
Neo Geo
Neo Geo CD

Fifteen data points, same as the French article. I don't think that I'll waste my money buying this issue. Maybe the hardware through March 1997 article still includes some data that we don't already have. Still hunting for that one.

I gave a try one or two months ago but the problem is that SegaSammy accounting department doesn't have legacy data, they redirected me to a Sega contact.
Problem is Sega won't respond to my inquiry.

Does any journalist here have a reliable contact within Sega?

There is some old Famitsu and their top 30 available here.

Including the Zelda ALTTP second week, the 91-92 new year double week (SaGa 3 is number one) and the glorious first top 30 ever in the first Famitsu ever, in 86. I don't know what is the number one (it's from Bandai) but number two is Super Mario Bros.

We should keep an eye on this source, we had three Famitsu in three weeks.

Hoah great, let's keep an eye on this.

This may sound crude but I'm hoping we'll get each Top30 from the SFC era bc I'm putting together estimates for weekly HW sales. We can't really know exactly the HW sales for each individual week but I think we can get an idea of how sales may have looked from week to week. I'm adding up the weekly Top30 SW sales and comparing them to all the other major consoles (adding up SW for each week and it's ratio to HW), which consoles include PSX, PS2 (sales in league with SFC) and every Nintendo console (n64 thru Wii), to develop a formula for projecting HW weekly sales for the SFC.

I gave a try one or two months ago but the problem is that SegaSammy accounting department doesn't have legacy data, they redirected me to a Sega contact.

Yeah we need someone with some credentials SoA doesn't seem to respond to just laymen (unlike NoA).

coming soon : Famitsu #324 - 1995.3.3

This is a link to an Aquamarine thread (Bless her) of Nintendo Board of Directors / employees including NoA, could be helpful in finding a contact for access to early NPD data. Accounting department anywhere?

I added BiWeekly issues 1986-1991 to the third post. I didn't bother with chart dates yet as I'm not too confident about that until we get more charts.

Some charts I found around the internet, plus a couple already posted from unknown issues which I was able to work out the issue for;

Code:

^Thanks

I've always found the 30M LTD for Atari 2600 to be a bit sketchy as far as the quality of sources go.
In June 1988 Atari stated it had shipped about 25 million units which is to my knowledge the last official figure released by Atari about the 2600.

http://atariage.com/forums/uploads/monthly_01_2008/post-9346-1201143700.jpg

NGage has a LTD of 2 million units as September 2005:
http://web.archive.org/web/20130602...066/data/6/-/Q3-2005-earnings-release-pdf.pdf

Maybe the 30M is rounded, but 2600 was still supposedly selling significant numbers after 1988. I've seen articles from the time when Atari were still claiming six figure numbers/year in just the UK from around 1990, and I personally remember the 2600 still being marketed in the UK from around that time. Maybe I'll try to dig up those articles (it's a massive amount of magazines to go through) if this is controversial enough, but all that will prove is that Atari were still claiming sales past 1988, not the exact number of global sales.

Incredible contribution and find BKK!! I'm sorry I'm just now thanking you.

Thanks to your archeological dig of ancient gaming world we now have the debut of
Final Fantasy II [!!!] (in addition to FFIII and weeks 3,4 and 5,6)
Phantasy Star 2
Breath of Fire
Famicom Detective Club
Famicom Stadium '87
Gradius II
Castlevania
weeks 2,3 of Dragon Quest 1 (yes the first!) and Super Mario Bros. 2 [Lost Levels].

Now just to get the weeks sorted out.

I am playing through scenarios and I can confidently give some formulas that are workable:

Dec 1994: x2.1 for PSX (in line with Dengeki sales not x2.5)
Mar 1994 ~ Jan 1995: x4.35 (except an awkward week in Oct)
Nov 1993 ~ Jan 1994: x15? sales awkwardly low during Holiday and New Years period and compared to Dengeki data
Jan 1992 ~ Nov 1993: x12 this has worked very well for me and in line with 1992 LTDs posted
1991: x? still testing, major shift after bi to weekly switch.
1986 ~ 1990: testing x25 - x30

Also what is this? Are these TOP30 charts for sale? This was in the April '93 issue.

Does anyone have any information on how well or poorly the Samsung Saturn performed? Kinda curious to see how it did in Korea.

MikeMyers

Member
So I'm guessing that its under the "Other 0.5 million" category?

To be fair though, the Saturn was already being phased out by 1997, so I think the Samsung sales would probably be the bulk of Korean sales.

^whoop whoop! Thanks again BKK. DQIII's record breaking debut (release date: 2/11).
News at the time reported 1 million sold at release and not without chaos ensuing in Japan:

1988 Launch Day News clip:
https://youtu.be/UgSHSk12gnM
The reporter seems to say 1 million sold/shipped? on day one and an additional 1.5m expected to ship? by the end of the month.

The second title is Kamen Rider Club: gekitotsu shocker land (release: 2/3).
It looks like this is week 2/1-2/7 and 2/8-2/14.
Also there are only Famicom titles ranked, I wonder if Famitsu tracked PC-Engine at the time...

Yeah, the "Kama" ones would come under "Other" as they have specific Korean model numbers.

I'm curious to see how well the system performed in Asia outside of Japan, but it seems there isn't any way of finding out. Too small of a market?

You could get new games written to blank disks, something like ¥‎2000 for the disk, and ¥‎500 for the game. When you got bored of the game you could just get it overwritten with a new game for ¥‎500. A lot cheaper than buying a new game outright. You could also buy new games outright from it, where the shop would write the game to a new disk and supply a case and manual etc. I don't know whether the latter could also be overwritten or not.

In this case Pro Wrestling saw nearly three times as many points from retailer written disks than factory manufactured units.

So the Legend of Zelda (and other DS SW) shipment data from NCL includes both factory written disks and retail write-overs or just factory?

Lexis-Nexis database had a transcription (I specifically asked to user thegoldenband for confirmation) of a Nikkei Weekly article in which it was stated Panasonic 3DO final LTD is 1.38 million units which would mean the international shipment for 3DO Real last fiscal year is 0.03 million units.
Above in bold the updated data.

Goldstar 3DO shipment data is still a bit of a mystery.
My educated guess however is that 3DO total shipment between all manufactures to be likely lesser than 2 million units.

MATSUSHITA DROPS GAME-MACHINE PLAN

SECTION: INDUSTRY; Pg. 9

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. has abandoned plans to develop a 64-bit home video-game machine intended for release at the end of this year, President Yoichi Morishita said last week. The decision means the company has virtually withdrawn from the home game-machine market.

The consumer-electronics giant apparently decided there is little room for a fourth major player in the home video-game market, dominated by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Nintendo Co. and Sega Enterprises Ltd.
Matsushita unveiled a 32-bit machine in the U.S. in October 1993 and in Japan in March 1994. But only 1.38 million units have been sold to date due to a lack of attractive software. Sales are far smaller than those of similar machines made by Sega and Sony, which entered the market after Matsushita.
The company obtained rights to an image-processing technology called M2 from 3DO Co. of the U.S. for 10 billion yen (87.7 million dollars) last October in an attempt to leapfrog its rivals with a 64-bit machine. But product development dragged on and it was unable to meet the scheduled release date, sources said.

Most of these came from here, he tweets lots of other old Famitsu articles too;

https://twitter.com/chou_nosuke

I wish he would tweet more TOP30charts, I've been watching him everyday now and it's mostly just review scores with various featured games.

Can someone ask him to post TOP30 charts with the old famitsu articles he posts? (I don't have a Twitter account, lacking in Japanese comm. skills)

^NintenDomination. Those were the days.

Remember to multiply by x12 for 1992. RS at 110,000 in its third week here (166k last week), how did a title that looks like a last minute GB to SFC-port become such a hit?

That's from Famitsu 392 talking about harware shipments as of March 1996.

Lot's of interesting bits there, but I want to focus about one of the consoles from which we have the least info about.

According to that, the Virtual Boy had only shipped 140.000 units in Japan, with 630.00 shipped overseas, by March '96 the system had been discontinued everywhere, so wordwide sales would be 770.000, which is the number floating around the internet, but I had never seen the 140k one for Japan before.

I ran into it while unsuccesfully looking for 1995 software data, for the time being I had what I could translate from home2nifty and what Moor has posted here (thanks a lot Moor.)

Right now I have data for 25 weeks, so missing over half of the year.

Missing weeks would be:

Week 4 (1995.01.23-1995.01.29)
Weeks 6-11 (1995.02.06-1995.03.19)
Weeks 17 & 18 (1995.04.24-1995.05.07)
And Weeks 21 - 38 (1995.05.22-1995.09.24)

Might have missed a post here, please let me know.

Going back to the scan, I got it from http://www.planetvb.com/ a really cool site I just found out about.

I found a thread there about the person who posted the scans, apparently he has all the 1995 issues and has posted a lot of scans on that site, however all are Virtual Boy related, articles, comics, interviews, reviews and such, sadly nothing about sales (except the one posted above) not even the Top 30 for when the system came out, or any other.

I planned to email him to ask him if he could help, but I don't know, I'm kind of shy.

On an unrelated note, gamedatamuseum seems to be down.

btw, mutiplier for 1995 is 3.65 right?

Yeah, that's the site I was talking about last month, ha ha.

He replied me, the scans were made by a user from their forum, so I asked if he can kindly forward my email to him
