Hey guys, so I've been counting the number of retail chains tracked in the TOP30s posted, here's when the number of retailers seems to have changed:

Weeks TOP30 covered dates (not issue dates):
during 1986-1989: tracking 5 retailers
-sometime after Mar 1989: went from 5 to 11 retailers
-in July or Aug 1990: began tracking 12 retailers
-in Oct or Nov 1991: began tracking 13 retailers
-in Feb 1992: began tracking 14 retailers
-in Jan or Feb 1993: began tracking 15 retailers
-in Jun 1993 (5/31 or 6/7): Lost one retailer so went down to 14 being tracked after this point

This seems to be the one lost (highlighted): Anyone got any info on it?
QvhJG2v.png

-in Feb 1994 (2/28): went from 14 to 19 retailers (x4.35 formula starts at this point)

When we get more issues we'll be able to see exactly which weeks new retailers were added.

Edit: will update with more info soon

Note: the retailers are listed at the bottom of the first page of the TOP30.

Good work, but where does the x4.35 figure come from?

Good work, but where does the x4.35 figure come from?

The NOV database originally had the April '94 chart with x4.35 (http://homepage2.nifty.com/~NOV/top301994.html). That number holds up for the most part with annual '94 Dengeki SW sales up to about mid-Sept. If you want x3.65 looks like a good formula to changeover to at that point. (I will be curious to find out what happened with the number of retailers at that time if more issues become available).

x2.5 for PSX best matches the Dengeki Ridge Racer figures for '94 (253,000), so for now I'd recommend going with it for PSX SW in its first month.

The disparity between Softbank, Dengeki, and Famitsu Saturn sales through 1995 to help us with a formula:
(For Moor-Angol).
Code:
	Softbank LTD: Dengeki LTD: Famitsu pts charting (x3.65):
[B]Virtua Fighter [/B]11/24/94 677,910 550,100 155,369 (567,098)
[B]Victory Goal [/B]1/20/95 245,993 235,600 46,178 (168,550)
[B]Panzer Dragoon [/B]3/10/95 401,281 out-of-top50 86,756 (316,659)
[B]Daytona USA [/B]4/1/95 546,228 575,400 181,025 (660,741)
[B]Greatest Nine [/B]5/26/95 150,571 229,500 68,590 (250,354)
[B]VF Remix [/B]7/14/95 144,225 312,000 116,912 (426,729)
[B]Riglord Saga [/B]7/21/95 141,175 334,400 84,520 (308,498)
Softbank GREATLY underrepresents Saturn SW sales after about April 1995 through the fall of that year, famitsu comparisons need to be made with Dengeki.
Dengeki Top50 Saturn sales: http://web.archive.org/web/20080511172935/http://www.gamejin.net/

These sales show that the x3.65 formula is too high for Saturn SW from the time of Daytona through the summer. Those famitsu totals should not be going above the Dengeki LTD considering they only include charting weeks. I suggested x2.5 for PSX's first month (which matched Dengeki RR sales) but that largely would be too low for SAT.

Large amounts of individual Famitsu issues for sale at Buyee.jp.
http://buyee.jp/item/search?query=ファミコン通&page=4

This seller has a ton of issues from 1990, 1991, 92, onward:
http://buyee.jp/item/search?query=ファミ通 &seller=kaidancoaster

They're not that pricy, if you guys have some cash you could pitch in and buy an issue and post the top30. For example buy one that could have an important title's debut you'd like to see. I've placed a bid on the issue (1993.9.10) with Seiken Densetsu 2's first week.

^Can you count the number of retailers at the bottom of the top30 page (first page)? The number changed sometime this month.
This week the numbers jump up unusually, any idea why? (if not store related)

13 retailers.

Maybe there were promotions at some stores (edit: or Famitsu messed up).

It's interesting because the next week (2/24) a new retailer is added (so 14 now) and the point sales of the top 30 total drops from 49,159 > 27,352 week over week. It should go up not down, it's like a doubled week.

Chris1964

Sales-Age Genius
It's not a double week but there is a possibility Famitsu did its magic again and gave points of 2 weeks instead of 1, that could be an explanation.

Whatever is easier for you, I only need the 1994 and prior data.

Will look into this thread but I'm pretty sure there's stuff on the file I have that aren't here.

It says x5 now, but I can't see how he calculated either figure.

The problem with using Dengeki's Ridge Racer figure as a base to extrapolate everything else is that it assumes that Ridge Racer isn't an outlier, which being a launch title, it almost certainly is, and that Dengeki figures were accurate, when in fact, they had worse coverage than Famitsu.

PS launch was supply constrained, it's quite possible that some retailers received a disproportionate % of stock compared to their usual marketshare, this would really throw off the numbers in the launch period for trackers with a relatively low coverage of the overall market, depending on what stores they tracked.

I don't know where those Dengeki numbers came from, but they were still using points at the end of 1997. Comparing to Famitsu numbers they were anywhere between 5x and 12x lower, averaging 7.8x. That's lower coverage than Famitsu which was 5.3x when they switched from points in 1996.

Dengeki PlayStation Sales (97.12.08 ～ 97.12.21): [Famitsu / Dengeki = points ratio]

01. Densha de Go! <SLG> (Taito Corporation) {1997.12.18} (¥5,800) - 27,287 [272,476 / 27,287 = 9.986]
02. Mobile Suit Z-Gundam <STG> (Bandai) {1997.12.11} (¥7,800) - 25,618 [183,301 / 25,618 = 7.155]
03. Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back <ACT> (SCEI) {1997.12.18} (¥5,800) - 22,999 [172,253 / 22,999 = 7.490]

Thank you. Could you or someone fill the gaps/help the translation with these charts from a few pages back? Didn't see them ever get a full translation.

The translated charts are from my personal excel with sales projections from my own research thus far (14 retailers = x11 or so) and subject to change, look at it as just a preliminary to give an idea of the range, not to be taken literally. LTDs added when previous week figures had been made available.

This bundle, along some others still on the way, cost me over $200 (including everything). Shipping was the killer, I had to pay for two shipments: one to ship from seller to Buyee.com's warehouse and then the international shipping.
The issues themselves go for only about $5-$10 but then other fees get added, a lot of fees. Consolidating issues together is an additional $10 which then increases the weight / ship rate by hefty amounts. Not too happy about all that.
So please enjoy everyone.

Great work Square. That sure cost a lot of money.
Sure was.

Top 30 coverage: 8/2/93 - 8/15/93

A few more still on the way.
Buyee.com has some new high quality issues from 1990 on auction (~$9/each). Feel free guys to purchase one or two.

I snatched no. 6 (3*16) and no. 16 (8*3), so we'll have DQIV's launch and a gap filler for June, will post when they arrive :)

Notice the date at the top is not the usual single Friday date:

Unfortunately one of the issues I purchased may not be Dragon Quest IV's debut, which is issue 7 of 1990, I grabbed issue 6 (3*16). Maybe someone else could swipe issue 7 from Buyee?

DQIV's sales are unusual. The total points are low for a Dragon Quest title (78,626 pts.) compared to III which was released in when just 5 retailers were covered yet it was selling huge amounts in May and June. It was a Feb 11th release. (Total figures come from Famitsu's cumulative points to 1992, ppsted a few pages back in this thread). The "Game Over" book mentioned 1.3m were sold day 1, so how was it outselling new releases like FFIII months later?

This doesn't look to be a double double week.

Dates covered must be

124 {1991.01.21 - 1991.02.03}
126 {1991.02.04 - 1991.02.17}
127 {1991.02.18 - 1991.03.03}

When you post scans of 124 and 126 and see previous positions of games there it will be clear.

Famitsu uses "new" even for games for came out out weeks before but this the first time they chart in top 30.

Chris1964

Sales-Age Genius
There is a jump from 124 to 126. Where is 125?

It should be this

121 {1990.11.26 - 1990.12.09}
122 {1990.12.10 - 1990.12.23}
123 {1990.12.24 - 1991.01.06}
124 {1991.01.07 - 1991.01.20}
125 {1991.01.21 - 1991.02.03}
126 {1991.02.04 - 1991.02.17}
127 {1991.02.18 - 1991.03.03}

There doesn't appear to have been a no. 125 mentioned in the OP. Instead famitsu doubled the previous (2/3) weeks or that was their "special" issues? Yeah I'm confused about this...

One of the "special" issues.
Scanning through the special issues on auction and they do not have Top30 charts on the content pages. Looks like Famitsu may have had double double weeks during the biweekly era.

That scan comes from Chris's site, check it out. There were many special volumes scattered through the year and that could explain the gaps.

This was in the 12*4 1992 issue. Maybe an update on HW "shipments"

My guess is first half shipment update of the fiscal year ending 93/03 (basically as September 1992).
What's really interesting is the shipment data for Master System.
I'm wondering what market it cover...
BKK back then put in Europe (other markets) but I believe it could be referring to International (abroad).

Awesome, thanks Square, yes, shipping is a killer, experienced the same myself in the past.

Yes, those should be H1 for FY 92/93. I've been collating SMS serial numbers with the intention of estimating production numbers for quite some time now. These and the previous numbers fit with existing PAL numbers and my preliminary estimations based on serial numbers. For North America they stopped manufacturing in 1990, bar a small number for Mexico in 1991. By the time this period covered they were only manufacturing PAL units.

I haven't posted PAL estimations yet, but for North America it was 1.74m. TecToy's Stefano Arnhold gave a figure of 1.8m which matches that pretty well (there's a small margin of error in the estimates). PAL will be under 7m. They only produced another 130k or so after 1993, most of those in 1995. Japan? Just 130k total, but that doesn't include Mark III (which should be higher), for which they used a different serial number format which isn't fully understood yet.

I always wondered how much Master System sold and what it's best selling games were.

I'd imagine it would have at least outsold Saturn & Dreamcast.
