‘F1 2016’ launches straight into pole position replacing ‘No Man’s Sky’ (-81%) at No1.

Launching 5 weeks later than its predecessor, sales are down 32% on F1 2015. ‘Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ (+13%) climbs up a place to No3 with promotions helping to give it a boost. There is little change in the Top 10 with a host of new releases not due out until next week. However outside the Top 10 the most notable climber is EA’s Mirror’s Edge Catalyst’ (+90%), which leaps back into the Top 40 at No27.

-81% is quite good for NMS, I'd say. Was expecting a lot steeper decrease after the negative stories surrounding the game.

Bloody hell... I saw this thread and immediately thought it was Monday which meant I should have been at work today.

Don't do that again haha.

Uncharted 4 was -78% in its second week, so it can't be bad for NMS.

Established IP, and will be front-loaded since the people who buy it know what they are buying and are already established fans. New IP are where you expect legs if they have holding-power as a product.

It launched in the middle of the week instead of Friday. This will account for a slightly higher percentage I think?

Yes, this is a very possible answer!

That said, I don't actually know, I am just musing.

Not good F1 being down 32% over last years AND with bigger install basses...Game deserves so much more...

That's the thing though, No Man's Sky has not been received very hotly, so you would expect it to drop off a cliff, right?

Yes... but then that would be a bad hold/massive drop, which is what I was saying. You can't have possibly expected it to collapse by 99% would you? lol

I was expecting a drop of around 90%, what with the bad reception and it being a mid week release, so that's why I thought it was a good hold. Not at all an expert on sales numbers (my prediction was most based on the UC4 numbers, which may not be a great reference point), though, so my predictions are probably just wildly off. :)

80% is pretty standard for a big mid-week release, although there seems to be a pretty vocal hate force against this game, so I expect it will still be spun as bad regardless. Just a matter of time until someone posts a thread about the "massive drop!!!".

Wasn't it 100,000 copies opening for NMS? If so, 81%- drop would mean 19,000 sales second week right? I was expecting it to drop at least 50% but maybe I was too hasty with my judgement.

How many weeks has a Sony published game been no1 this year? This will probably be the last week till GT sport but Sony have done really well this summer.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is also a Tuesday release (5 days of tracking), Deus Ex: Human Revolution was released on Friday so it only had 2 days of tracking.

Let's see how it will do compared to the previous entry and if it will manage to become the biggest August opening of the year.

Code:
[Week 10, 2004] DEUS EX: INVISIBLE WAR (EIDOS)
[Week 34, 2011] DEUS EX: INVISIBLE WAR (EIDOS) - 122,000 LTD

[Week 34, 2011] DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION (SQUARE ENIX EUROPE) - 96,000 / NEW

[Week 34, 2016] DEUS EX: MANKIND DIVIDED (SQUARE ENIX EUROPE)

A lot of people have lost interest in Formula 1 over the last few years. And it's hard to be excited if the game recreates the current season. It definitely deserves better sales but I won't be surprised if this is the last F1 game.

And let's forget that NMS inital sales were way better than anyone could have expected, to begin with. The game was also out of breath on Steam after 4 or 5 days, but the initial number who jumped on that ship was huge (around 730K).

Wait, this is way earlier than usual!

3DS software pretty strong this week, if New Super Mario Bros 2 and Tomadachi life are doing so good is because the bundles, aka 3DS sales this week should not be that bad.

Hope in great sales for Deus EX next week.

Quite a drop for the F1 game. As an F1 fan I haven't even checked the game out I'm so detached with how poor the previous ones are.

Also F1 TV viewing is down around 40% in the UK as BBC axed it's half way house coverage. I don't think there's a correlation though, it mostly the floating casual viewer has been lost.

Now, now. Let's not ruin the momentum of the hate train.

I look forward to see how fast the train for TLG will go.

If it's any consolation, sales are 218% up over F1 2014.

I guesstimate that F1 2016 must be around 30,000 units, very far from F1 2010 which debuted selling 170,000 units.

F1 2014 was the ultimate dead rubber game that appeared on 360/PS3 in 2014

Week 39, 1997:

Psygnosis F1 sequel, F1 97, has become the fastest selling Playstation game ever in the UK. Over 35.000 units was sold in UK alone between September 26th - 27th. According to Chart Track the game only came a few 100 short from the overall record currently held by Red Alert for PC.

NMS drop seems standard compared to other major releases. I think it would be a problematic drop if it didn't crush expectations and open at a staggering >100k.

I sure hope not, this is Codemasters' best entry in the series by far. I hope they build on their success and this game gets the sales it deserves.

...Why?

‘Destiny’ (-78%)
‘Watch Dogs’ still has its teeth firmly gripped on No1 this week despite an 81% drop in sales (84% drop on PS4/Xbox One)

Yokai Watch seems to have good legs after a somewhat subdued start (except for Spain). I would be confident in the sequel taking the franchise to new mainstream levels in Europe, except..it's supposed to be out here around the launch of the NX and will surely lose sales because of that.

3DS had the best month of the year thanks to Pokémon Go.

Note: I can't calculate y-o-y percentage change because MCV didn't publish July 2015 chart.

According to MCV, July was the worst month ever in terms of physical sales (revenue) in the UK. Chart-Track data goes back as far as 1996, the year that they took over Gallup's chart.

If we take a look at the first 7 months of 2016, retail software sales are down by 19.35% (volume) and by 18.90% (revenue).

The UK video game retail market has gone back to pre-2000 era. I unfortunately don't have pre-2000 data for the first half of the year, only for the first quarter. But if we just take into account the first 3 months of the year we can see how sales are slightly up over the same period in 1997, but far behind 1998.

*My own estimations (not official numbers)

Source: GFK Chart-Track via MCV magazine.

The market will take a breath in August thanks to No Man's Sky and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and should remain flat, no more double digit drops. The biggest release during the previous August was Rare Replay. The combined sales of No Man's Sky and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will be around 250,000 - 300,000 units if the latter at least performs as good as its predecessor.
