If you aren't in the top 5 of the all formats chart you pretty much aren't going to be over 10k with the way things have been so far this year

well if it's anything like the Japanese charts then that isn't entirely a bad thing. plus isn't that just UK? i mean u guys aren't reasoning much.

+ many Nintendo IPs tend to sell over time, and I can totally see Kid Icarus being one of them (in Italy it's advertised even in Easter eggs!)

This is not about being a good or bad console, when I talk about sales I don't have personal tastes. If you want my opinion I personally love the 3DS system, but we can't deny that its software sales are bad, hence our comments pointing out that.

Is it due to the UK market being is such dire straits that shops seem to not to be stocking certain titles? Ignoring Game/Gamestation obviously, but even HMV has not been stocking games like RE: ORC as far as I can see from my local (did everyone buy it online? =/). The only shop I've seen it in was my local indie store. Plus, I've not seen a single new copy of SSX anywhere! o_O

On another note, I can't believe RE: ORC sold that many. Looked like a disgraceful game.

I'd say ouch for KI:U sales, but I'm more upset about just how poorly everything sells in Europe.

Yeah wtf is going on. I thought people were all bragging about how the UK was taking over Japan as a market not so long ago. These sales sound terrible.

I wonder if more and more people are just getting smart and wait for games to drop in price. Maybe not to the point where it could completely explain why the UK sales are in such a slump, but if there is not a growing and significant amount of Brits waiting for price drops I would be very surprised.

Imo, the problem is another one; since some months ago, we didn't even know the weekly estimation from the chart, but we knew actual numbers from ELSPA awards or PR. In those cases, we had a clear idea on how games sold in a certain span of time, without knowing exactly how they performed on a weekly basis. I'm pretty sure many titles as Layton or Mario&Sonic started not so much better than Kid Icarus, and then they ended up to sell hundreds of thousand million copies. It's more a factor of perception, imo. Then, clearly the period is not so strong.

I kind of agree, but two things.
1) I think there's also a slump in UK, a pretty big one right now
2) I remember the last Layton debuted with 40k, so it's different.

UK market is massively down, 2011 (55.4m) was lowest year for software units since 2003 (51.0m), so far this year it's down nearly 30% on that. If we project that to the whole year UK would see just 39.4m units this year, which would be it's lowest year since 2000 (37.3m).

Dh2dY.jpg

We have a pretty good idea how games do on a weekly basis from the monthly charts going back to 2008. We've also had occasional "leaks", and the number of sales needed to chart at the moment is significantly lower than the last few years.

Just because Kid Icarus has a Nintendo label on it doesn't mean it will have legs regardless of genre. It's far more likely it will be out of the Top40 never to be seen again in two weeks time. Just like Resident Evil, which people said would have legs (and people are still saying it will have legs in the NPD thread, and thanks to the lack of data they can get away with brushing off poor opening sales by claiming legs which can never be verified).

Gamasutra.
Of possible interest to the folks here. I've put together some discussion of the BIU and NPD figures on European countries, specifically the sales outside of retail.

Key graph:
retail-other-us-uk-de.png

In brief, the BIU (i.e. GfK) and NPD figures don't line up very well in Germany, and the "total industry" data put together by MCV from various sources about the UK doesn't match NPD very well either.

UK market bomba.

well there are many things in 2012 that could change the trend

- Ps Vita Price cut + possible "holiday sales bump"
- Wii U launch
- Xbox 360 price cut (finally)
- Ps3 new " save plan " :D
- 3Ds full year with decent price tag

And of course the whole Digital Delivery market (PC,Console,Mobile) must be taken into consideration

FIFA STREET held on to its No.1 crown last week, selling around one and a half times more than its closest competitor. The football game spin-off gave EA its ninth All Formats No.1 of the year, despite the console title seeing a 44 per cent sales drop week-on-week.

CAPCOM new release Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City debuted at No.2, comfortably ahead of EA’s other Top Five games and previous charttoppers – Mass Effect 3 at No.3, FIFA 12 at No.4 and SSX at No.5. 60 per cent of Raccoon City’s sales were on Xbox 360 and 40 per cent on PS3.

Stick a fork in the UK market. It's done.

Seems only the blockbusters can get any sort of reasonable sales, and even then not for long.

At this point in the console cycle there should be more elasticity in the pricing, but nobody seems to want to be the first. :(

Title Count shows the number of iterations of each game all the way back to the late ‘80s. Only sales since 1996 are included.

This analysis is up to and including week ending February 11th, 2012. Some brands will already have added to their Title Count (e.g FIFA Street, Uncharted, UFC, Syndicate).

Brands can be companies, characters, a series and so on. FIFA and Mario are both brands, despite one being licensed and a company and the other an original IP.

Mario Kart Wii has now overtaken Dr Kawashima on DS as the biggest selling single format title in the UK.

Stick a fork in the UK market. It's done.

Seems only the blockbusters can get any sort of reasonable sales, and even then not for long.

At this point I begin to wonder if it's just the market desperately needing next gen, or if something more fundamental and dark is going on, EG, the iPad and smartphones is now beginning to eat console gaming as well as mobile.

I've ruminated on making a thread about that topic for a while now.
