I learn something new every day

I have to say, I'm way more excited when a manga is getting a live-action movie/drama than an anime. And I don't say it because I like dramas.
I'm more looking forward to what the manga's "universe", the characters... will look like in live-action because it's something completely different.
I just consider anime adaptations as "the manga + colours + animation + voices" but at the end of the day it's still 2D, it's still too similar to the source material and not really exciting when you've read it.

I mean, I've watched the drama version of Moteki and a lot of stuff just wouldn't have been possible if it was an anime (especially all the real songs they use).

I wouldn't mind live action adaptations if contemporary Japanese live action productions had competent acting, cinematography, and direction. Not to mention that there are times when the translation from the page to the screen is too literal, and you end up with something that looks unbearably dumb in live action.

Anime adaptations aren't necessarily going to be slavish translations of the source material; it really depends on the individual production. There's plenty where the experience is substantially different than reading the manga, and not just because of voice acting.

I know! It's just that I'm less intrigued and excited to see something that is still... I don't know what word is appropriate... cartoony... (it's hard for me to explain it in English, sorry :lol)

Oh yeah, I'm not criticizing/shiting on anime at all! And there is stuff you just can't adapt in live action.
But yeah, you get what I meant, seeing everything "for real" is pretty thrilling I must say.

Do you generally stay away from anime?

This was a very interesting read, it's a Shoujo Ai manga so it has everything you would expect from such a manga, except it was published in 1957 so it serves as an excellent example for the evolution of the genre over the years.
It is a very delicate and elegant piece, where it tells us the story of Yukiko, a first year student in the Sakura Girl's institute, a girl only highschool. Her story involves her relationship with her Upperclassman Chicage, president of the Ping-Pong club she is part of.
As the story goes on the two have a falling out for a certain ping pong related reason and the protagonist remembers the heart warming story of how they initially came together. Romantically it doesn't go very far which I suppose is pretty normal for its time, even now a lot of yuri/shoujo manga are afraid of going too far into things.
Constantly you can see a lot of symbolism in it and tropes that Shoujo manga are to abuse for years to come. The author himself continued to be active and moderately popular during the 60s with this being one of his earliest works. It kind of was heavily reminiscent to works like Aim for the Ace! and similar later works as an example.

If you didn't realise it was old already look at how she dresses in her house
Another curious stylistic choice you might have noticed which I haven't really seen much is how they seem to like using different colours of shade for different chapters. I found that kind of distracting at first but you quickly get used to it.
Overall, if you are curious about the genre especially I would suggest you take a look if only just for curiosity's sake, though frankly this is pretty good! It's also only about 4 chapters.

Jigokuren: Love in Hell 1-18 (END)
pi-piru-piru-piru-pi-piru-pi

Enjoyed it more for the setting / setup rather than for anything else it did. Excessive gore and suffering is all well and good, but it doesn't have the same appeal if there's no real consequence to it. Credit due to the author for attempting to put something resembling a genuine story in with the torture porn, but it was pretty badly handled.

Also it caused me to check out and add Jigokusei Remina (Junji Ito) to my backlog, so that's a plus.

I thought Remina was one of Itō's weaker works. Did you enjoy it? I remember it having a good short story at the end.

Devilman (Vol. 1-5; End)
That had more depth than I anticipated.

You're wrong about the first part
I'm still pretty damn confident about that one, sorry.

there are words that are only plural like ビーズ、ビーンズ、シューズ so it wouldn't be unheard of that he would make it plural.
Sometimes, they use the plural form of a foreign word as a base, indeed. Doesn't change the fact there's no actual plural in the Japanese sentence though.
But I'm not sure why you're even talking about that anyway, here. "Berries" would just be the logical plural of "Berry" / "ベリー" in an English translation. Why should Oda use the plural form?

Japanese transliteration often isn't based on the actual pronunciation, instead, it's usually based on how the word looks.
"Usually"? As in "more often than not"? ^^;

Jamaica, for example, is ジャマイカ even though it clearly is not pronounced like that.
Might well have something to do with the Spanish pronunciation... Obviously, the older the word, the weirder it can get. Sounds like they ended up with a weird mix.

Mecca and summit are examples of words that would not be pronounced differently regardless of if it had one or two consonants in the center, but they are メッカ and サミット in Japanese, respectively.
The double consonant of "Mecca" may not be pronounced anymore in English, but in Arabic...
As for "summit", take a better look at the Japanese spelling...

Started the One Piece manga(I previously exclusively watched the anime, which I'm current on) because honestly I just can't get enough of the world.

That first chapter. The part where Shanks gives Luffy the straw hat feels so momentous. Chills, bros. Chills.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.

It's so great.

Fun fact: Back in 97 when One Piece premiered, Takehio Inoue (Slam Dunk, Vagabond, REAL) read the first chapter while staying in LA. He knew from there it would be a great series. Good foresight.

I look up the original animes people keep recommending but nothing is relevant to my interests.
Have you tried Tiger & Bunny or Noein?

It's so great.

Oh yeah, I forgot T&B. It was actually pretty cool.

Yep. I enjoyed that show even with all the advertisements in your face. Funny to see Bandai sponsoring Heroes lol.

Noein is another show I enjoyed. Had its flaws but worth watching. It deals with time traveling if you're into that.

Come to think of it, I can't seem to conjure up any manga of this kind where it is not immediately obvious who is the "winning girl" is.

Most romance series of any medium are pretty obvious which girl/boy will win. The good ones are the ones that delude you into thinking otherwise even though, logically, the heroine/first girl on the cover wins.

Take Toradora for instance. There was tons of people arguing who the guy would end up with even though the title itself (TORA-tiger-Taiga; DORA-dragon-Ryuji) made it obvious who the main pair was.

Doukyonin no Binandomo 2

Well I wonder if the two month wait was worth it for a chapter with limited progress. Ended just like the first with Ugajin in his bed in the middle of the night, but no answers for why. On the other hand hearing the backstory for Tomoki and Kazuki's family was a bit interesting though odd (father remarry a 20 yo, guess it raises eyebrows but certainly nothing to break the family over). Still dont know who I would want Tomoki with, Ugajin would be interesting, though Nonomura is just the typical nice guy, so nothing really unique with that.

Was reading over ANN's detailed Otakon reports and I saw in the opening ceremonies that Nobuhiro Watsuki was invited but his work schedule didn't give him the time to make the trip. That would have been neat for the attendees if he could have made it.

Chapters are sooooooooooooooooo short. I love how they're talking about Shinji like he's Takumi. Pretty much a mirror image of Takumi when he first started racing on Akina. Takumi got this though. He'll have a hard race, and it'll probably end being as close as possible, but Takumi got this.

School is serious business. Appeantly you got to go to criminal activity if you're humiliated. Whatever the case, it's Ninja time.

This is a pretty decent read so far. The characters are fun and the art is great. It's nothing groundbreaking but it's worth a look.

I wonder if Urasawa's 41 page Monster Kingdom one-shot is going to be published anywhere as a standalone volume. It's in the newest issue of Big Comics released during the weekend. It sounds pretty interesting. It's set in an alternate reality where Tokyo has been the victim of many monster attacks over the years, and they have developed ways to minimize the damage caused by such attacks. As a side effect though, Tokyo has also become a huge tourist attraction for monster fans from around the world. The main character is a French monster fan who travels to Tokyo for sightseeing, and he meets a woman who has lost family members to monster attacks. I wanna read... :(

I just knew something like that was gonna go down. I hope Kou lives on and Sei takes out that shitty mother of his. (and yes, i'm not that well versed in the warring states era of china :p)

Also, translations are finally ahead of the anime series!

That shot of the Twin Towers was pretty… jarring to say the least.

Do you know if there's much that the anime leaves out?

As a whole? A few races left out here and there plus some deeper character development that's pretty rewarding. Fifth Stage ended with this last race just starting so the anime should pick back up with this race whenever Final Stage comes out.

I just wish the chapters would be released quicker. The last chapter in the series came out at the end of July and we're still 40+ away from it.

Akutou Danshi Collection Chapters 1-4 END

I'm not sure if anyone here has read it, but its about a girl that has to leave her expensive all girls school because of her family going extremely poor and heading to a Co-Ed school living in a dorm known as "The City of Crime." Not only that, but this dorm will be demolished if the students don't behave, so in order to keep the dorm she'll be staying in, our heroine must take on the job of being dorm manager and keeping her follow students out of trouble. Good thing she has a secret weapon!

Can she truly handle the task and stay out of trouble herself? Find out!
