A thread for people that are trying to play 52 games in a year. Tell us how you're doing and what you are going to play next - claim a post and update us on your progress!

ECJlqPU.png

How do I take part?
Claim a ‘main post’ where you will list all your completions for the year. You can use fancy images or special formatting to make it extra cool. In addition to this post your updates, completions and thoughts as singular posts throughout the year.

Does my main post need to adhere to a format?
Nope! We previously did, but now you can have it formatted however you like. Take some inspiration from previous year posts. Here’s a beautiful example!

Do I need to post reviews, scores, dates and stuff?
Also nope! It is highly recommended to spruce up your completions with mini reviews, a score (for example 2/5), your playtime duration, date completed, platform or any such fun statistical information but it's not required. You do you.

What's that Hall of Fame thing?
Those who beat the challenge get placed in the shrine that is the ‘Hall of Fame’™. Furthermore you’ll get a pretty little medal that denotes how many years you’ve overcome the challenge. Cool kids have been doing this for over five years.

How do I know when I've completed a game?
That can be tricky to determine, but it's ultimately up to you. If its a straightforward single player game then it's typically when the credits roll, but if it's say a multiplayer session based game maybe its when you’ve unlocked a certain feature or completed a battle pass.

Do the completions need to be games released this year?
Nope; any video game will suffice. It can be first plays or replays, classics or recent releases. It can be a game you started last year but are finishing this year.

Do board games count?
They do not. Vidya games only here.

I want to record durations, do I have to manually count?
No, most platforms (Steam, Xbox, Nintendo, etc) will do the duration tracking for you! If in doubt you can also use sites like HLTB to fill in the blanks.

Do episodic games count as a single game or X amount of games?
That's up to you. It's alright to count something like Life is Strange as one or five games. Your choice, for whatever makes sense with how you’ve been playing. Ask other users if in doubt.

What should I do once I've completed the challenge?
Send me a DM on this platform, with a link to your post that shows all the games you've completed, and I’ll make you thread famous by adding you to the Hall of FameTM. If I take a while to respond don’t panic, I tend to go into periods of hibernation throughout the year.

Is there a deadline?
Until Dec 31st 2024 @ 11.59pm!

Archive: 2014 | 2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018 | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 (shout out to jshackles jshackles as the prior host)

Starting in 2020 our Discord (http://discord.backlogbeat.com/) has since grown to over 150 members. Among discussing the 52 Challenge (posting updates, picking games, etc) we also coordinate a slew of other totally cool game activities (additional context @ backlogbeat.com)…

A play on a traditional book club that sees us choosing and collectively playing a nominated game per month, sharing our thoughts and opinions through to beating it. Those who beat the current nomination get entered into the raffle to pick the next months; share your favourite games or recent releases you’re excited for with us!

Jan: -Jul: -
Feb: -Aug: -
Mar: -Sep: -
Apr: -Oct: -
May: -Nov: -
Jun: -Dec: -

It’s the same thing as above, but only for movies! Similar approach in that all you need to do is watch the nominated film to acquire a raffle ticket with an even lower bar to enter as most choices can be completed with a leisurely sub 3 hour investment.

Jan: -Jul: -
Feb: -Aug: -
Mar: -Sep: -
Apr: -Oct: -
May: -Nov: -
Jun: -Dec: -

Sometimes it's tricky to get a thing nominated but there’s enough folk playing it that it makes sense to carve a dedicated place and play together. Elden Ring is a great example of a game that reaches new heights when played alongside others.

Come say hey, everyone is welcome and folks from these threads are our favourite kind of people! You’ll likely see a lot of familiar faces :)

XQdEALR.png

The brave individuals that overcome the challenge this year;

<none yet!>

The additional survivors who overcame the challenge of the previous years thread;

And below are the legacy participants from years prior who we hope to see return to us this year;

Re1CLvV.png
pK9SmRE.png

And so there lists all those that have risen to the challenge during this or prior years! If you see yourself beating the challenge, please remember to send me a DM with your post once you’re done!

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Game 1 - Like A Dragon: The Man Who Erased His Name - Xbox Series X - Completed Jan 3rd, 2024
This game started out a bit on the slow side, and that's saying something after having just finished Judgment a few weeks ago. Chapter two was particularly brutal in its slow pacing. However, the final chapter more than makes up for the game's other shortcomings as it was absolutely amazing storytelling. Seriously pumped now for Infinite Wealth to drop in a couple of weeks!

Game 2 - Alex Jones: NWO Wars - PC - Completed Jan 6th, 2024
Ha this game was interesting, to say the least. Gay frogs, free ducks, globalist agendas, it seemingly had it all. One of the levels was San Francisco where you have to avoid homeless as they vomit on you, and destroy tents. That seemed fairly accurate? I dunno, lots of interesting references that I didn't really get, since I don't follow Alex Jones. Game was pretty meh, kind of like an old Flash game. Enemies (especially bosses) had way too much health. Very little challenge.

Game 3 - Koumajou Remilia: Scarlet Symphony - Nintendo Switch - Completed Jan 6th, 2024
"Mom, can we get Castlevania?". "No, we have Castlevania at home." Castlevania at home: Koumajou Remilia: Scarlet Symphony. I picked this game up because I thought it looked like a pretty good Castlevania clone. Turns out, it's got a lot of similarities with Symphony of the Night that Konami ought to sue. The game was short, and the levels were pretty tedious. I'm honestly not a huge fan, but I got the double-pack, so I'm sure I'll play the sequel at some point...

Game 4 - Kingdom Rush Vengeance - PC / Steam - Completed Jan 11th, 2024
I played through this a couple of years ago (on Android), but decided to play through again on Steam and unlock the game's plethora of achievements. This game still holds up really well as one of the best tower defense series, and this is probably the best game of the series, simply because of the variety of towers available. Tons of fun, played through all the levels and did all the challenges.

Game 5 - Dungeons and Dragons: Tower of Doom - Retro Achievements - Completed Jan 11th, 2024
I spent a few hours delving through Tower of Doom. I realized that I haven't ever played this game before, but I always saw it in the arcade, and it looked like fun. I sunk a fair few virtual quarters into beating this game, I couldn't imagine paying that much on a real arcade machine though, I would have definitely gotten frustrated and would have quit well before the end. Really fun game though!

Game 6 - Time Survivors - PC / Steam - Completed Jan 20th, 2024
A fun take on the Vampire Survivors genre, this game had you pick from a cast of historical characters and the stages were all different times in history. While not incredibly deep, it only took me about 10 hours to fully complete it with 100% of the Steam achievements. The biggest problem with the game is that it's incredibly unbalanced - there is definitely a weapon loadout that will let you win every time, and some of the weapons are totally worthless. So, by the time you get enough reroll power ups, it's basically just an instant win.

Game 7 - 12 Labours of Hercules XII: Timeless Adventure - PC / Steam - Completed Jan 22nd, 2024
Another year, another Hercules game that is 99% the same as the last one. For some reason, I really dig these games - they have a good flow to them, and they usually make me think and strategize. It also helps that they're usually incredibly cheap on Steam sales. Completed this one with all gold times - and even beat one of the developers records (badly) on one of the super secret stages. Fun stuff, can't wait for part XIII!

Game 8 - Octopath Traveler II - PC / Steam - Completed Jan 28th, 2024
Easily my favorite JRPG of 2024, this game was amazing from start to finish. It took me almost a full year to finish the game, as I took a break after finishing my first character's final chapter. I'm glad I came back to it in earnest though, because the payoff at the end was emotional and incredible. I had nearly 100 hours on my save file, and there were still a lot of side quests and collectibles I missed. I hope that a third game in the series is made eventually, because this really is some of the best stuff that's come out of Square Enix in decades.

Game 9 - Turnip Boy Robs a Bank - PC / Game Pass - Completed Feb 2nd, 2024
Man, fuck this game. I really, really enjoyed the first few hours of this game - going into the bank, coming out with treasure used to level up your character... a really solid rogue-like. But the last level, man fuck the last level of this game. You have to go into the bank, beat four bosses, then go back through each of the four boss chambers while a big space thing is chasing you - all while on a six-minute timer. Took me a good 10 tries - that's a whole hour where, the entire time I thought "wow, this game got to be a huge pile of bullshit". It seriously ruined the game. Liked the first one, will definitely not buy / play the next.

Game 10 - Granblue Fantasy: Relink - PC / Steam - Completed Feb 10th, 2024
I've been waiting ages to play this game, and I'm happy to say it was worth the wait. Great story, really great characters, fun battle systems, and above all else: really, REALLY good music. A bit of a budget title (at $50), and the main storyline never overstayed it's welcome at about 15 hours for me. I'm not a massive fan of the end-game stuff, but I may boot it up a few more times to grind out some levels / equipment. Overall, this game had massive charm and heart - I hope we see others like it in the future.

Game 11 - Star Trek Borg: Remastered - PC - Completed Feb 19th, 2024
I saw a post on GAF that this game got a "fan remaster" that turned it into a browser game in high definition. I used to love this WAY back in the day, so I decided to check this out. I'm very glad I did, this was such a treat! John DeLancie as Q did an amazing job here and put on an excellent performance. It's crazy seeing the footage here in such high resolution detail, I remember it being SUPER grainy and hard to make out back in the day. My only gripe is that there was a ton of buffering - I wish there were a way to buy this on modern systems and play it locally.

Game 12 - Brotato - PC / Game Pass - Completed Feb 24th, 2024
It took me about 30 hours, but I finally finished up all the achievements for Brotato on Xbox. I also previously played this to 100% on Steam, so I had a jump start on knowing the best combos and such. Some of the builds in this game are incredibly broken, but I like how the game almost expects you to use that to your advantage (otherwise you'll get overwhelmed easily and die). A really solid game through and through, so much fun in short 25 minute bursts.

Game 13 - The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel - Nintendo Switch - Completed Mar 3rd, 2024
This is only the third game in the Legend of Heroes series that I've beaten, but this series is quickly climbing to the top of my "best series ever" list. It's unlikely to dethrone Final Fantasy or Xenoblade Chronicles, but damn was this game great. Like the other games I've played (Trails in the Sky FC and Nayuta), this starts out as a typical "slice of life" narrative that grows in scope as the game progresses. Despite this game being pretty old, I still didn't see the ending coming! I am definitely going to have to dive into the second game now, it's just so damn good.

Game 14 - Braveland - PC / Steam - Completed Mar 10th, 2024
I played the Braveland trilogy on the Switch a few years ago, but liked it well enough to replay it - this time on PC. The game is still a fun and charming light strategy game that holds up well enough. My biggest complaint is that I wish the game got just a bit deeper - some of the later games in the series had more going for them, and it would have been nice to have that in this setting. Maybe I'll give their latest game, Knights of Braveland, a try next.

Game 15 - Soulstone Survivors - PC / Steam - Completed Mar 16th, 2024
Been playing this off and on since 2022, but finally feel like I've "beat" it (despite there still being about 20 achievements I haven't unlocked). The game is a really solid Vampire Survivors clone, each hero has a unique skill set and ability that can be changed per run. The rune system lets you unlock and pick different passive perks for each character / run, so that's cool too. Massive amount of build variety here, every run seems pretty different. Only complaint is the lack of unique stages, and the fact that once you unlock the best runes each run starts feeling the same unless you handicap yourself. Overall though, very solid game.

Game 16 - Final Fantasy VII Rebirth - PlayStation 5 - Completed Mar 18th, 2024
Amazing game, really a solid 10/10. Easily my game of the year, and something absolutely incredible will have to get released this year for it to be topped. Honestly, this was so much better than Remake - and I think I even enjoyed it more than the original from 1997 (which is saying a lot). Amazing music (I've already got tickets to the concert later this year), fantastic characters and character development. I even enjoyed the ending a lot, which has been pretty dividing online. Just really solid, very amazing.

Game 17 - Balatro - PC / Steam - Completed Mar 22nd, 2024
I heard good things about this card game, so I thought I'd check it out. Glad I did, it's a lot of fun! It also got my son and wife both playing it, so you're wecome devs. Won my first run after only about 6 hours playing, got really lucky and had two jokers in play that both had x-multis, so I was getting crazy scores like 100k in one hand. So much random shit happening with this game, I love it.

Game 18 - Alone in the Dark - PC / GOG - Completed Mar 28th, 2024
This game wasn't really on my radar, but it got good reviews here on GAF (and terrible mainstream reviews) so I thought I'd give it a chance. I picked it up on GOG since it was available there. The graphics were good, and the story was engaging. Voice acting was incredibly good. The game had a huge amount of atmosphere that really portrayed 1930s New Orleans well. Don't listen to the critic's reviews on this game, it was a really solid adventure / survival horror game. I also liked that it only took about 7 hours to finish, so it never felt like it overstayed it's welcome. Also, I'm glad it wasn't too scary, because I'm a wuss with horror games. A really great experience overall.

Game 19 - Unicorn Overlord - Nintendo Switch - Completed Apr 10th, 2024
This was a hell of a game. I loved how the gameplay blended both real-time and turn based combat. The characters, although numerous, were really well written and had fun personalities. Exploring the map and unlocking new quests / units / areas was a ton of fun and easily the game's standout quality in my opinion. My only real complaint is that the game does go a bit long (my save file had just over 50 hours on it), too much of the dialog was unvoiced, and there were so many characters that I felt myself not caring about a lot of them towards the end. Otherwise, this was a solid experience!

Game 20 - Deep Rock Galactic Survivor - PC / Steam - Completed Apr 14th, 2024
I loved Deep Rock Galactic, but hated that it was multiplayer only. This basically fixes this problem, while also making a game that's in one of my new favorite genres. The game is tons of fun, maybe one of the best autoshooters yet - as it requires not only movement and weapons but also mining and securing minerals that you can use between runs to level up. Game ran great on the Steam Deck, and also looked incredible on my new 32:9 ultrawide monitor. Unlocked all achievements, will probably return when the game is out of early access.

Game 21 - Crystal Project - Nintendo Switch - Completed Apr 26th, 2024
So there was a lot about this game that I absolutely loved. And also, there were things I hated. The class system was amazing, finding crystals was a fun endeavor, and the general progression of the game was incredible. This was all marred by some seriously terrible platforming sections that were mandatory. Overall, I'd give this game a 7/10 - would be 9/10 if not for the platforming.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

Let's give this a go then. Reserving a spot.

2024 - the year of the gamer.

1. Baldur's Gate 3

Wow. It's the sort of game you dream up as a kid - so many laughs and a reminder of what games can do. While it's still my GOTY for last year, I can't help but feel like Act 3 is unfinished. The last lap of this game is a mess on numerous levels. Thankfully, Acts 1 and 2 are so stellar that it more than makes up for it, and I'm looking forward to the inevitable Definitive Edition. It's the journey, not the destination. 125 hours.

2. Tekken 8

Hilarious story mode and the best total package I've seen for a fighting game. Arcade Quest is a superb entry into the obtuse series, and I love the flow of each game. Netcode's been pretty good to me too. Working my way through the ranks as Kazuya and setting myself the goal of hitting the blue ranks this year.

3. THE FINALS

I had a lot of fun with this with friends, but I can't see us going back. It's alright, but to be honest, the matches are either far too easy or it's a sweat-fest. It has potential though, and hope it does well.

4. Bloodborne

Replay. Only have a few trophies left for the Platinum. Just a leviathan of a game, and it's getting better and better with age. May you find your worth in the waking world...

5. Balatro

I have a problem.

6. VALORANT

Officially too old for this - I'll stick with fighting games.

Oh man, completed this back in 2017 and haven't even attempted it since! I'm going to try it again this year. I have a new baby, so this could go either way. Hopefully she sleeps a lot.
First Edit:
1: The Looker - PC - Beat 1/1/2024 ~2 hours
This was super enjoyable and didn't overstay its welcome. I think somebody on GAF recommended it a few weeks back and I'm glad I gave it a go.
2: Far Cry Blood Dragon - Xbox - Beat 1/12
Fun game. Probably the most enjoyable Far Cry game that I've played.
3: Swords of Ditto - Switch - Beat 1/21
Started on PS5, but it started crashing repeatedly starting with the 3rd loop. I enjoyed it. Wouldn't mind seeing these guys make an Adventure Time game.
4: Cocoon - Xbox - Beat 1/22
Excellent puzzle game. Also very pretty. I like the "story" and the puzzles were tuff at times but always fair. Twice I felt like a complete moron when I realized what I needed to do. A+
5: Saturday Morning RPG - Switch - Beat 2/8
This has been on my Switch forever, and i don't remember ever buying it. It was OK. I liked the scratch and sniff sticker buffs. Taken as a whole, the humor was the worst part of the game. Some stuff was funny, but most was abysmal. It was also too easy. Not bad but not great or even good, to be honest.
6: Vampire Survivors - Xbox/PC - Beat 2/15 ~ 90 hours
Jesus, I pumped so many hours into this and thought about calling it "beat" a while ago. I did end up waiting until I beat the legit final boss and completed the collection. Love this game and I honestly think I'll pump even more time into it for a long time.
7: Madden 24 - Xbox - Beat 2/8
Alright, I've played a decent amount of time into this since release. Did a shared franchise with my kids. I consider it "beat" because I destroyed one of them in the AFC championship game and the other was absolutely dismantled in the Super Bowl. I beat the game. And I apparently still got it. As an aside, I was going to let my one son win the AFC Championship game so he could play his bro in the Super Bowl. I let him get ahead and he started calling me trash and stuff. I took it personally, and he learned a valuable lesson. Don't talk shit if you can't back it up.
8: Knights of the Round - Switch - Beat 2/17
I never actually beat this on when I played it on the SNES. Definitely not as good as I remembered it being, so that kind of sucked. Played with one of my sons, so at least it was a good time.
9: Maneater - PS5 - Beat 2/29 - 9ish hours
It was pretty Ok. I'd say it's on the low end of the "good" spectrum. It got very repetitive toward the end. Funny story, I saw a preview for this a long time ago and thought it looked nuts and absolutely needed it. Hungry Shark world came out on the Switch, and I thought it was this game. It was not... And it sucks.
10: Turnup Boy Commits Tax Evasion - Switch - Beat 3/2
Pretty fun. Wasn't expecting it to be so short, but I think that helped it in the long run. Never felt repetitive or boring
11: Unpacking - PC -Beat 3/3
Meh. It was relaxing. Too short. I saw 3 albums and I was expecting 3 different stories. I finished the first and moved on to the second only to realize I was playing the same rooms. Glad I played on Gamepass and didn't spend money on this.
12: Shadow Warrior - Xbox - Beat 3/5
Fun game. Honestly have been working on this one on and off for probably 2 years. Would play a bit and get sidetracked with other stuff. Finally decided it was time to clear it from the backlog.
13: Deathloop - PS5 - Beat 3/8
Every time I played this, I loved it. Then it would go on the backburner and I'd decide that the game was garbage. Until I'd pick it up again. This cycle went on for 3 and a half years until I finally decided last Thursday that I was going to beat it. Absolutely loved it. Only completed 1 ending, but I figure I'll come back around later and do the other one.
14: Actraiser Renaissance - PS5 - Beat 3/15
Actraiser was one of my favorite SNES games when I was a kid. Easily top 3. This was actually a pretty decent remake. The graphics were pretty OK for the overworld, but the side scrolling portions were actually kind of bogus. At least the gameplay was how I remembered it. I used to beat the old version in a day, but the new one definitely is a bit longer. Unfortunately, that means I probably won't come back to it as often as the original.
15: Grow Home - PS4 - Beat 3/20
Pretty fun. Nothing mind-blowing. It was a nice relaxing game for while my baby was sleeping this morning.
16: Cat Quest 2 - Xbox - Beat 3/23
My son had been telling me for a while that I would really like this game, so I finally give it a go. Very basic but fun game. Enjoyed it.
17: Morphblade - PC - "Beat" 3/25
Another one I don't remember ever buying. It was OK. Nothing special. Definitely better time wasters out there.
18: Elden Ring - PS5 - Beat (again) 4/9
This one may be cheating, but whatever. I switched up my main console to the PS5 after using the XSX for everyday use for a while. Decided I should beat Elden Ring on there since I only ever beat it on xbox. Still love the game. Still top 3.
19: Layers of Fear - Xbox - Beat 4/25
Hated it at first. Head bob was making me sick. Thankfully I was able to turn it off. Then things clicked and I enjoyed it. Not scary, but mildly unsettling. That being said, the last chapter was so dark I couldn't see anything. And the ending sucked. At least the one I got. From what I can tell, the others were just as lame in different ways. Solid B- game.

Reviews and thoughts:

January:

1. Death Stranding: Director's cut 9/10
Play time: 98 hours

2021-death-stranding-dn.jpg

I really really enjoyed my time with this, the beginning of the game drags on a lot and the UI is very convoluted at first glance, hence the docked points. However, there aren't many AAA games as unique at this, there's something really therapeutic about treking across a desolate america, most of the time completely alone, but not really. To be able to interact with the stuff other players have left in the world not for you specifically, but for their own travels, gives you a sense of community within your loneliness. I can't wait for DS2.

February:

2. Alan Wake 2
OIP.yPFA7HvbuGr4vrYfBuw5tAHaEK

Platform: PC
Play time: 30hrs
Rating: 8/10

I have a lot of mixed opinions about this game. I was really looking forward to a conclusion or continuation of Alan's saga after so many years, the visual presentation was awesome: I played at 4k60 maxed out on a 4080 with path tracing and the game looked phenomenal. Chapter 4 "We Sing" is one of my favorite moments in gaming as of late and I really appreciate what they tried to do here. However, for me the game has many problems that prevent me from ranking it higher, the gameplay for one is not much to write home about, to me this was disappointing because Remedy are known for good combat, here it is slow and doesn't feel that great, a complete 180 from Control, which I loved. The pacing suffers from the structure of the game of being able to swap characters around and play in whatever order you please. I found Saga's chapters boring and very long at times, the opening of the game for example takes about 2 hours or more before you get into combat for the first time. Saga as a whole to me feels like a net negative as a second protagonist, I was unable to relate with the character, I couldn't care less about her plight or personal journey and was only interested in the larger plot. Alan's sections have issues too, but here I actually was invested in his journey as a character. Some of the set pieces are legitimately great though I must admit and the soundtrack is 10/10.

I also want to say that locking out the true ending before a new game plus mode feels like a kick in the teeth as someone who has no interest in replaying games straight after finishing them, so I ended up just youtubing the differences and the true ending.

3. Les Mills Body Combat VR

OIP.uaGRpQgYVK3Ju9ABjsF1mAAAAA

Platform: PSVR2/Meta quest 2
Play time: 15 hrs
Rating 8/10

I ended up buying this game as a way to get some excercise in during the winter when I'm too lazy to drive to the gym and I was pleasantly surprised, this game will make you work up a sweat like no other and it can really be brutal at times, definitely recommend it if you want to work out at home. Hit detection sometimes doesn't register properly and that is a bit frustrating but not game breaking. The trainers can become cringe at times and the song variety is not the best but the game serves its main purpose and more.

4. Helldivers 2
helldivers2.jpg

Platform: PC/PS5
Play Time: 30 hours
Rating: 9/10

I am one of the few people who was looking forward to this game before release and was interested from the get go, a coop online adventure with starship troopers vibe? Count me in day 1. I am satisfied to say the game did not disappoint at all, I managed to convince my friends and wife to get it with me and it brought us endless hours of fun spreading democracy across the galaxy. The gunplay is satisfying and friendly fire is always a welcome addition in this type of games to add even more chaos to the madness. I docked it a point because of the server issues, but aside from that I really love it and recommend it. First battlepass I have bought in years.

5. Final Fantasy VII (Original)

wp8183218.jpg

Platform: PS Vita
Play time: 35 hours (with speed up mechanics)
Rating: 8.5/10

i will start by saying that this was not a replay, I actually had never played the original Final Fantasy VII, going in for the first time in 2023 (ive been playing it on and off since around october of last year) was a very interesting experience, first of all the game has not aged gracefully at all, it looks like shit and it can even be kinda confusing to make out stuff on the small Vita screen. Many of the controls and mechanics are very dated as well. However, I can appreciate that had I played this back then in the 90s I would have been blown away by how it's filled with content and how complex of a story it has specially for its time. I was captivated by the plot and it was the main reason I pushed through to the end and I don't regret it. I really wanted to finish this before tackling the remakes.

6. Warioworld

SI_GCN_WarioWorld_image1600w.jpg

Platform: Steam Deck (via Dolphin)
Play Time: 4 hours
Rating: 6/10

I was always curious about this game back then in the early 2000's but never really got around playing it when the gamecube was at its peak, so I decided to give it a go and see what it was about, I can't say I enjoyed my time a lot, the game has aged pretty poorly IMO and while it can play alright at times I didn't really find it fun or challenging. The "story" feels like a fever dream and it's actually not that complex at all. I was going to force myself to finish this but I'm actually just done with it as I wasn't really having fun, the one thing that was awesome was performing WWE style moves on enemies lol. I got to around 60-70% of the game is my guess.

Never get close but I start strong by "cheating" i.e. starting a game after Xmas. Also I play big games and have kids so it is damn near impossible. My goal is 26 and I tend to get close.

  1. Final Fantasy 7 Remake (PS5) - Finished 1/1. Trying to make use of the 6 months left on my 1 year sub to PS+extra, but not all.
  2. Ghosts of Tsushima (PS5) - This game has way too much samey content in it. It was fun at first, but it is basically ASS Creed. No way in fuck am I going back to take down the remaining Mongols. Sony, please make the sequel tighter and less bloated.
  3. Cocoon PC Gamepass - Meh. The art style is cool, but the puzzles are a bit over the top.
  4. Nobody saves the world (PS5) - I liked this, but I think it was a touch too grindy and long.
  5. FFVII Yuffie DLC. This is a good DLC and I like how it came free with the preorder of FFVII Rebirth as did a copy of FFVII Remake which I can let my kid play in a couple of years.
  6. Bramble I liked the game until the utter bullshit last boss. Why the fuck put an overly long clunky boss fight in a game like this?
  7. Tiny Tina's Wonder Land (PS5) - Was a decent romp
  8. Bluey the game - Played with my almost 5 year old. It was a good game for him. Lots of complaints about the length but the game had 3 or 4 Bluey episodes in it plus a simple game a little kid could enjoy. Thanks GamePass
  9. FFVII Rebirth - Minigame fest, should count as 20 games. Not so sure about this one. Maybe I had too much FFVII this year. Kinda didn't like the ending.
  10. Dragon's Dogma 2 - Fuck this game. So many things that disrespect the player's time in favor of repetitive bullshit. I loved the first, but this one only grew in annoyance factors in the 12 years since the first one.
  11. Immortals of Aveum - PS++: Good game. It should have done better and would have if gamers were richer and had more time. The magic FPS is interesting. It does have some annoyances, but overall it was a solid effort by the dev team. Shame they all got canned.

Hopefuls/ 2023 Backlog:
  • Ghosts of Tsushima PS5
  • FFXVI - Maybe this will motivate me to finish it.
  • BG3
  • Sub to Ubisoft+ for:
    • AC Mirage
    • Avatar
    • Prince of Persia
  • Jedi Survivor when it hits Gamepass.
  • Stalker 2
  • Finishing Super Mario World 1/2, SMB3, New SMB Wii, with my oldest.

Grabbing my spot, hopefully I'll do better this year ;P as I only finished 17 games last year. I'm hoping to start the year off strong as there's at least 5 games I had started this past year that I'm more than half way through.

1. Streets of Rage 4 - iOS, est. playtime: 7-8 hrs, beat the game with Axel on Normal difficulty and earned 21 out of 45 Achievements on 1/5/24
I really enjoyed Streets of Rage 4, I enjoyed it so much that prior to getting the iOS version (which I'd only bought after being given a Backbone One, which I'm really enjoying) I'd bought & beaten it on 2 other platforms (PS4, Switch) multiple times so beating it another time was a walk in the park.

2. Sonic SuperStars - PS5, est. playtime: 9+hrs, beat the game with Sonic on normal difficulty & all 7 Chaos Emeralds on 1/07/24, and then on 1/14/24 I beat Trip's Story & The Final Battle modes, overall earned 26 of 39 Trophies
This game for me was a tale of two halves, the first half of the game I really enjoyed, I especially enjoyed the way they tweaked the Chaos Emeralds to give Sonic & Friends new abilities. Unfortunately the good vibes didn't stay for long as the second half of the game as well as the 2 unlockable modes that unlock after beating the game once (and are required to fully beat the game) became a total nightmare to play. Sure they had some interesting concepts (the cyber world was kinda cool) but they're imo ruined by poor level & boss fight designs (instant death traps that pop up suddenly as you're zipping through the stage & lengthy boss fights with late fight insta death attacks that force you to redo the entire boss fight) that are especially evident in Trip's story that really pissed me off, almost to the point of not finishing Trip's Story or The Final Boss mode.

3. Super Mario Bros. Wonder - Switch, est. playtime: 20+ hrs, 100% completed the game (All Wonder Seeds, All Flower Coins, All Standees, All Top of the Flag Poles, All Badges, & All Secret Exits) with Mario on 1/12/24
Got this game as a Christmas gift this year along with Sonic SuperStars & Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and I've been alternating between both Sonic & Mario games since getting them. Between the 2 games Super Mario Bros. Wonder is definitely the better game, has more in the way of content to unlock, and was more enjoyable playing. Though as far as 2D Mario games go I found this game to be (outside of the Final Final Test Badge level) not that difficult as I was able to 100% complete most levels in one try and only a handful of levels really challenged me.

4. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 - PS5, est. playtime: 12hrs, beat the game on normal difficulty with 84% total completion on 1/19/24
I have mixed feelings about this game, I enjoyed the gameplay as well as the graphics, and I enjoyed the whole Kraven storyline, but I didn't like the changes they made to Venom & Harry's stories and the whole "city & world are in danger" plot device being reused from the first game once again in the final third of this game.

5. Tekken 8 - PS5, est. playtime: 4+ hrs, beat the game's story mode on normal difficulty on 1/25/24, beat all the single player/offline story modes (Arcade Quest & Character Stories) & earned the Platinum Trophy by 1/27/23
Overall I really liked this game to the point that I earned the game's Platinum Trophy, the only thing I didn't like was the whole thing with Reina's backstory only being hinted at & briefly revealed at the end as well as the whole thing with Jun being a bit too ambiguous (is she alive or isn't she and if she is alive how, also why did she wait til now to make her presence known) for my liking.

6. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion - PS5, est. playtime: 21 hrs, beat the game's story on normal difficulty w/65% total completion (54% Trophy Completion) on 2/4/24
I for the most part really enjoyed this game, but I did find the missions (especially the later ones) to be a bit of a slog/pain to get through and I didn't like finding out after the fact that there's quite a bit of content that's completely missable which really sucked as I'd have prefered to tackle it during my first playthrough.

7. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intermission DLC - PS5, est. playtime: 8 hrs, beat the Intermission Story DLC on Normal Difficulty on 2/10/24
This dlc was a mixed bag for me, I liked revisiting Sector 7, seeing events from the main game unfolding from a different perspective, & getting a little sneak peek at what is to come, but I did not really care for Yuffie who I mostly found to be annoying and I did not care for the difficulty of the final boss fight.

8. Final Fantasy VII ReBirth - PS5, playtime: 100+ hrs, beat the game on normal difficulty with approx 90% overall completion on 3/19/24

9. Alone in the Dark (2024) - PS5, est playtime: 8+ hrs , beat the game on normal difficulty with Edward Carnby on 3/24/24

10. Evil Dead: Regeneration - PS2, est. playtime: 6 hrs, beat the game on normal difficulty w/100% completion on 4/5/24

Game 1 - 1/1 - Trails in the Sky SC - Logitech G Cloud - A little bit of cheating but I was at the end of it and wrapped it up yesterday, I hated on the trails series for a long time but a couple months ago picked up Trails in the Sky and almost put it down but then loved it by the end, SC was fun though it was tough going through all the same locales again. Started Trails Third and really enjoying Kevin as the Protag.

Game 2 - 1/1 - Super Mario RPG Remake - Nintendo Switch - Also wrapped this one up in the same day because my wife was working and had 12 hours to kill. Fun game, great Nostalgia factor. Wasn't the amazing game I remembered it being? I had fun but my Rose Tinted goggles told me it was better. Also Geno is much less cool than I remembered.

Game 3 - 1/4- Limbo - Nintendo Switch - First time playing, puzzles were interesting though a little too easy. Wish it expanded more on the story. Enjoyed my time. Look forward to inside!

Game 4 - 1/8 - Trails in the Sky the Third - Logitech G Cloud/Steam Deck - liked this one much more than I thought I would. Really just one long dungeon but they did enough to make it interesting. More of a setup for the story threads to come. I think I need to wash my brain before starting the Crossbell arc. Might play some shorter non rpg games.

Game 5 - 1/13 - Inside - Nintendo Switch, another fun puzzle game im finally getting around to, I thought it was a little tougher than Limbo. Enjoyed the darker tone a bunch more. Looking forward to whatever Playdead does next

Game 6 - 1/15 - Spiderman 2 - Playstation 5 - Huge spider man stan since i was a kid. Had a lot of fun. Still think 1 was a little better but it has venom so auto wins the race. Look forward to 3. Unsure how i feel about the status quo, but im in and look forward to Wolverine.

Game 7 - 1/24 - AI Somnium Files - Nintendo Switch - Not the biggest VN person but I did enjoy Dangaropa 1 and 2. This one was enjoyable but not as great as those games. The main gimmick just made me feel super pressured anytime I had to do it. I liked the story more.

Game 8 - 2/2 - Silent Hill: Short Message - PlayStation 5 - a little in your face with what it wants to get across but graphics were pretty; I thought it was fine, chase scenes were mildly annoying but not as bad as people made them out to be. Monster was unique. Would never play again.

Game 9 - 2/8 - Trails from Zero - Steam Deack - lots of fun, enjoyed the crew and all the improvements from liberel to crossbell. Story was a little slow until the end even then it did pick up too much but had a good time. On my way to Azure!

Game 10 - 2/20 - Neo: The World Ends With You - Nintendo Switch - Great game been playing this on and off for a while. I played the original on switch and I enjoyed this one much more than that I think mostly because of the controls. Music is great, characters are great (Beat Yo!), Great tie up to almost all character arcs and stories. I dont think they will ever make another one but this one was such a good ending I dont think that's a bad thing! On to Penny's Breakaway and the next Trails!

Game 11 - 2/27 - Final Fantasy 4 Pixel Remaster - Nintendo Switch - Classic and the first RPG I ever was introduced to, loved the characters and setting, probably in my top 5 for FF games. Looking back on it now some of the writing was pretty bad. Oh you killed a bunch of people? Dont worry thats cool were family now. Kain is and always will be the GOAT Dragoon. Looking forward to 5 which I have never played.

Game 12 - 3/16 - Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth - PlayStation 5 - I have nothing but beautiful things to say about this game. They did such an amazing job ,the world was worth exploring, the quests were worth doing. Game made me tear up and laugh and feel all the nostalgia stuff. The story got a little headache inducing at the end but loved every second of this game.

Game 13 - 3/18 - Mario V.S. Donkey Kong - Nintendo Switch - Great little puzzle game. Thought it would be harder than it was, didn't take long at all to beat but It was fun

Game 14 - 3/18 - Helldivers 2 - PlayStation 5 - Great multiplayer game. Didnt know we could invloude multiplayer games! I have put in about 50 hours so far. Having a blast with some friends. FOR DEMOCRACY!!!!

Game 15 - 3/26 - Elder Scrolls Online - Xbox Series X - Jumped in with a buddy anf put about 100 hours in. Played through the main story line. Game was lots of fun but I'm just not into the MMO world anymore

Game 16 - 3/29 - Pocket Card Jockey - Nintendo Switch - Fun Solitaire like game. Really enjoyed this more than i thought I would

Game 17 - 4/2 - Trails to Azure - Steam Deck - Great game, probably my favorite trails game so far. Chapter 4 still has me messed up. Looking forward to the 3D era of Trails!

Game 18 - 4/7 - Balatro - Nintendo Switch - Had a little fun with this but definitely don't like it as many people seem to. Maybe I need to give it some more time but backlog is too big to keep going

Game 19 - 4/9 - Kirby and the Forgotten Land - Nintendo Switch - Never plated a kirby game but I had a blast with this, genuinely made me crack up at certain mouthful abilities and was a lot of fun to play!

Game 20 - 4/14 - Wonderful 101 - Nintendo Switch - What a WONDERFUL game , hated it at first and then it really really grew on me, turned into one of my favorites and a Platinum game I think is really under rated. I think its a shame we will probably never see Wonder 102, but really enjoyed this one. Reminded me of Team America World Police aesthetic and it was funny. Controls were a little difficult at times, definitely was meant to be a Wii u game.

Game 21 - Ongoing 100 hours in - Rust - Xbox Series X - This is a game I will never recommend to anyone but a game I cant stop playing with my friends. I thought I would include it because its taking up a massive amount of my time in the new year because we have put in about 100 hours together building a community server. I will include a couple extra games because this is an ongoing title. Toxic Game, toxic people, cant stop playing.

Game 22 - 4/19 - Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising - Steam Deck - Meh, didnt really care for this just blasted through the story in case there was anything I needed to know for hundred heroes.. Hoping the main game is better

Game 23 - 4/24 - Beacon Pines - Steam Deck - Not really my usual cup of tea, it was recommended on reddit and resetera as a fun horror VN with branching story telling and I thought the art was done really awesome. I dont know. It captivated my attention all the way through but when someone said horror I was anticipating more. Creepy little story, Definitely not horror. Good enough to keep me entertained.

I technically beat my first game already. Just got a 4:06 in Mario 3 (wrong warp run). Only 51 more to go 😂

Edit: I don’t want to make another post in case someone wants to reserve a front page slot, but what would people consider “beating” an arcade game like OutRun? Is it getting to the finish in any path, or would it be finishing with ALL of the paths?

100%. It’s really however you want to qualify it. I usually stick to getting to credits. If I play something like Mario Party, I might make sure I play through all the boards and see everything the game has to offer. Just set a personal goal with a game like OutRun and then add it to your list.

Even though I didn't make 52, I felt like I hit a good stride last year so I wanted to keep it up.

1. Immortals of Aveum
immortals-of-aveum-is-far-more-than-your-typical-debut-game-v0-Letb0xORQn7KLZy_6x0k1dUZUxgqPPT42DyAbXyFbSY.jpg

I picked this up when it randomly went on sale recently on Xbox SX for around 7 bucks IIRC. At 7 bucks, it was a great experience. The story is kind of mediocre, netflix-style writing, but the gameplay itself makes up for it as it is inspired by the great Metroid Prime series when it comes to structure and gameplay. More importantly, it doesn't overstay it's welcome even when going after side content.

Got the platinum too.

Solid B rating.

2. The Crew 1

Disclaimer: I would have finished this last year but I hit a difficulty wall which caused me to grind.

I had this in my backlog and decided to finally play it once Ubisoft announced the shutdown. I miss this generation of racing games that decided to tell a story of murder and revenge. The gameplay was solid for what it was, as it was a very, very rough start(like driving on ice) but then felt much better about 8 hours in once you would get enough upgrades to steer like a regular racing video game. I liked the snappy map(played the PS4 version on PS5) where you could quickly load anywhere in the country. There was only one wall near the end game that required grinding.

B+ rating on The Crew.

3. Ashen
x7aAaqKCmdIdUHseBsVrtGWO_86hsyCT3b2Gm_FEVnE.jpg

A beautiful, uniquely color graded, fun soulslike game that builds upon the aspects of the Dark Souls 2 beta (carrying torches and choosing between shields/2h weapons and seeing darkness). Amazing experience all the way up until an infuriating final boss that simply wasn't designed for this game(delayed combos that you can't avoid when up close, hits that do up to 45% healthbar damage per swing on max health with dmg resistance equipped, etc).

The entire game fell apart in front of my eyes as I witnessed pure RNG from not only the final boss itself, but also RNG from needing the companion to not do dumb things in order to kill the final boss. I even looked up expert playthroughs online and they all did the same thing: Use the NPC companion's dumb AI to either trick the boss and cheese it with spears, or have the companion aggro for as long as possible. Then once the companion dies in the second phase, do 1 pip of damage every 10-30 seconds as the boss flails around giving you 0.5 seconds of a single opening to do damage.

There are no Dark Souls or Sekiro-esque gameplay lessons to be learned here, there are no well designed level or gameplay tricks, there is no build you can farm to get through it, you just have to deal with what it is and what it does and hope 'maybe this run the RNG will be good 🙏 '

The DLC had a much better balanced end boss. I almost gave this game a C+. I didn't even want to give this game a B-. It feels like an A experience. However, this is one of those soulslikes where they decided to build a final boss for an entirely different game(or maybe sequel) and put it in this one, ruining the very smooth gameplay ramp of difficulty just to be difficult for difficult sake. Highly disappointed end after such a great journey.

B- rating (A rating for 95% of the game)

Edit January 26, 2024 On hold: Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning (the game is simply too damn long and too MMO-like)

I think I’ll try this. I have done this before in a notebook, but it’s been a while.

Coming Soon: Tekken 8, FF7:Rebirth, Granblue Fantasy Relink, and Dragon’s Dogma II.

Currently playing:
Star Ocean Second Evolution: 20 hours in at level 50. Making decent progress. - Finished 1/22/2024
System Shock Remake: playing on Steam Deck. Too soon to tell, but so far so good.

Beaten: 3

Edit: Finished Star Ocean Second Evolution - great game. Leveled up to 94.
Silent Hill: The Short Message
Final Fantasy V

I’m almost finished with the new Prince of Persia.

I almost beat Ghouls ‘n Ghosts (arcade) yesterday after an evening of grinding. I made it to the final checkpoint of the last level on the second run through, then accidentally got knocked into the stupid fire weapon icon, and it was all over after that. Couldn’t get far enough into the level to get a different weapon. It was heartbreaking.

I’m gonna try again tonight.

Another one down! Finally beat Ghouls n’ Ghosts on arcade. Damn, that game was tough. Took me the better part of a week to grind through it. I probably spent about eight or nine continues just to make it through, but it was great.

Some fun things. I discovered a softlock in the game in stage five. I also found some good cheese for three of the bosses. Found a few small skips, too. I haven’t ever seen the game played through before, so it’ll be fun to watch a speedrun now.

One thing that definitely sucks is that if you make it to the checkpoint in stage 5 and then accidentally get a bad weapon, you basically can’t continue the game. Well, I mean, god gamers probably can. But that happened to me twice, and I just couldn’t progress, even after a dozen continues. The game is both forgiving and utterly brutal in some parts.

Excellent game overall. Shoutouts to Joe from GameSack for constantly talking about it, which made me interested in the first place. Highly recommend, 8/10.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
4 games in already!! I am rolling through this Trails series. Trying to sprinkle in short games on the backlog in between! On to the Crossbell Arc!
Dude if you've already finished 4 Trails games in 8 days, you're going to have enough free time to do this challenge twice over and then some

Haha no just 2 and 3 and I was already partially through 2 so it was a little bit of a cheat. Did you play the trails series?

I played Trails in the Sky 1 (and loved it), then got about halfway through 2, which I want to get back to eventually. I played Nayuta last year (also loved it), and decided to play through Trails of Cold Steel 1 which I'm currently halfway through.

So, I'm jumping around a lot but I do love the series and want to play through them all.

Sky was great 2 was even better though I was ready for it to be done. 3 was my favorite which i guess is an unpopular opinion but I liked the protag. but you should definitely revisit the crossbell arc first and trails 3 first. Trails 3 the main point of it for me was to set up all these future stories and getting a little back story. and crossbell is great, a lot of the systems and visuals are a great evolution from sky.

Do you know where boundless trails fits into it? I didnt know it was part of the series!

Death Stranding: Directors Cut: 9/10
Total play time: 98hrs

2021-death-stranding-dn.jpg

I really really enjoyed my time with this, the beginning of the game drags on a lot and the UI is very convoluted at first glance, hence the docked points. However, there aren't many AAA games as unique at this, there's something really therapeutic about treking across a desolate america, most of the time completely alone, but not really. To be able to interact with the stuff other players have left in the world not for you specifically, but for their own travels, gives you a sense of community within your loneliness. I can't wait for DS2.

. Completed campaign and tried to do some flipping but got bored soon.

You would think this is the same game but with a new coat of paint! But no, this is actually a different experience, with a campaign mode reminiscent of Teardown, better graphics and... I think that's where the improvements end. It's a much more barebones game compared to the first, as you do not need to actually "build" things like toilets and radiators, you just put them in place, and the experience ends up being disappointing. If I knew (the reviews were almost stellar when I got it) I would probably have waited until it was on GamePass.

SteamDeck: Even in SteamDeck graphics mode the fps suffers quite a lot. It's playable, but not really enjoyable.

My Score: ★★★☆☆

2. Full Metal Daemon Muramasa

Over 100h.
All routes.

Do you like giant robots, daddy issues and childhood trauma? Well you don't need to keep rewatching Evangelion, there's now a second piece of media for you! And boy is it traumatising. The worldbuilding and the plot themselves are stellar, and the production values are insane (this was meant to be NitroPlus' magnum opus, so they sank a lot of money into it) but don't get me wrong, this is the kind of story where everyone suffers a lot, like Kara no Shoujo. It's also super long.

One of the best Visual Novels I've read, but if you're squeamish, maybe don't apply the +18 restoration patch. There are like half a dozen sex scenes in the game, all of them really unnecessary, and maybe 2 of them are consensual. The only thing you will miss are some exquisitely drawn boobs.

My Score: ★★★★★

3. Lies of P

WdYHNyX.png

28:36h.
"Rise of P" (heh) True Ending

Timothée Chalamet as KPop Pinocchio fighting the Vovas from Atomic Heart in an italian-style Yharnam. What could go wrong here? Not a lot, actually! Lies of P is one of the most convincing soulsborne games not made by From. The setting is mostly inspired by Bloodborne, but the gameplay is closer to Sekiro, with its emphasis on perfect-parrying attacks, and the plot is more similar to Atomic Heart than anything. While it has some issues, particularly with the extremely small parry window (the stages themselves are quite easy, while the bosses can be some bullshit) I had a lot of fun with my motivity build and I was quite obsessed with it overall. It's also short for a game of this type, which is a refreshing change of pace.

If there was a "Soulsborne Pub" and Lies of P went in, the big guys would pat him in the back and buy him a pint, but they'd mostly ignore him during conversation.

My Score: ★★★★

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

Really fun game though!

Over 100h.

"Rise of P" (heh) True Ending

Timothée Chalamet as KPop Pinocchio fighting the Vovas from Atomic Heart in an italian-style Yharnam. What could go wrong here? Not a lot, actually!
