Shipped but I don't have sellthrough figures suggesting it's close enough for me to be comfortable putting it on the list.

You really think it is possible for them to have shipped over 1.6M copies and sold less than 1M? Especially since as pointed out just between Nov + Dec in just the US it has sold 874,000 reported by NPD:

Nov NPD was 473,000
Dec NPD was 401,000

That leaves ~126,000 between Europe + Jan of the US. I know we don't have concrete Europe numbers, but it charted the following way in just the UK:

2007 - Week 47:
04 (__) [360] Mass Effect (Microsoft)
Week 48:
16 (04) [360] Mass Effect (Microsoft)
Week 49:
38 (16) [360] Mass Effect (Microsoft)
Week 50:
37 (38) [360] Mass Effect (Microsoft)
Week 52:
30 (__) [360] Mass Effect (Microsoft)
2008 - Week 01:
31 (30) [360] Mass Effect (Microsoft)
Week 02:
31 (30) [360] Mass Effect (Microsoft)
Week 03:
25 (31) [360] Mass Effect (Microsoft)
Week 04:
33 (25) [360] Mass Effect (Microsoft)

That's 9 weeks (10 if you count when it dropped), with a strong opening week, and average remaining weeks. Lowball it and say 50,000 opening, + an average 10,000 remaining weeks, and you'd get the difference, without even counting the many other Europe territories it charted in.

UK sales would have to be far less than 10% of US sales for your skepticism to merit anything imo.

It's too bad we probably won't get any more numbers from NPD, but I can't imagine it doing less than 50K in January (as worst case).

Edit: Maybe my numbers for UK are too generous, a 25K + 5K average would be more "worst case", leaving you short of 50K without counting Jan from US, or any other Europe territories.

I also completely forgot about the media field day Mass Effect has been getting lately, that alone should bump the US sales by a fair amount.

listen to the mad man
Mass Effect will obviously be a million seller as of the US number report on thursday. I just don't feel comfortable right now awarding it the title given the lack of any substantive or concrete data from Europe. Your napkin math seems accurate enough and I concede that based on that it's likely that Europe passes the gap, but it's not as if this is a title that's done selling and we're left with 875k accounted for and wondering whether or not Europe bridges the gap; this is a title that we know will break a million very soon if it hasn't already.

I think Europe should play in when we have reason to believe that Europe is a notably strong seller versus NA/JPN (PES being a prime example here) or when we know the game has shipped more than a million, and it's done selling and we're left wondering if Europe can have it count as selling more than a million.

Why? The Pokemons have always been combined, just like any game with two simultaneously release versions. Pokemon D/P should be combine as well

I agree with Stump on this, they should be counted as seperate titles.

Why don't you own a DS!?!

You don't live in the U.S., either.

SSBB
1st week: 816K
2nd week: 266K

NSMB
1st week: 865K
2nd week: 315K

Exactly. the. same. drop. :lol Awesome.

How curious. But doesn't it first have to "sell" before it can be considered "sold" out?

I knew people would ask about DS. Im not a portable gamer. I AM considering a DS for a few games though. But alas, I am part of destitute GAF and must put other priorities, like living expenses, above gaming.

Really surprised to see PSP so high again...

Great second week for SSBB, not so much for DMC4. Wii Fit chugs along & MKDS resurfaces in the top ten again - simply amazing legs. Any translations for the other games?

Everyone's going to start moving their games to the PSP if Nintendo doesn't do something about this DS situation.

Why?

it should be Mario Party DS, according to LTD

PSP slim has given the PSP its own equivalent of the 'DSlite', it'd be fantastic if that translated to better and more frequent software releases for the platform, and would also keep Nintendo on their toes (I'm very disappointed with the current first party support for the DS in particular).

Yep they're two things I noticed first, those PS3 numbers especially is worrying.

Doesn't matter when software sales still are close to non existence on the PSP. People clearly buy the PSP in Japan for anything but gaming.

Actually, I see Monster Hunter Portable still selling and I beg to differ. Crisis Core also sold amazingly well. The PSP's problem isn't that it can't sell software... it just hasn't had lots of releases lately that can pull big numbers.

Nintendo won't ramp up the software support significantly. Though a new redesign should come faster than expected, if things keep staying like this.

Nice... 58%of 1st week sales. Could this one have the "Wii ___" kind of legs (small version) and sell >5000/week on the next one or two months? That would be a great indicator for games using the balance board.

When you have competition that's selling far better hardware numbers + is cheaper to develop for, then you're working at a disadvantage, I guess.

Though I'm hopeful that the recent trends will make developers take notice that the PSP is here to stay. Handhelds ftw.

On one hand I'd prefer them combined should they make the charts as such. On the other hand, I really wish Famitsu provided a breakdown (percentage and whatnot).

Because the shift was before the PSP Slim announcement?

It will be funny to see some companies jumping back on the PSP board.

I agree with him - Nintendo hasn't released any noteworthy DS software for a while. They're only major Christmas hit was Mario Party DS, and Hudson developed that. It seems they have been concentrating on Wii a lot last year, but hopefully some nice DS stuff will come out soon. They need more of the Touch Generations stuff for starters - look at the hardware sales waning!

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

I'd hate to see Nintendo's Wii lineup if they weren't concentrating on the Wii..looks pretty barren to me.

I'd be wary of wearing down the Touch Generation brand, particularly the Training games

Where's the motivation to come back? Games aren't selling any better than they were. I mean, yay, Squonx can sell 800k of an FFVII prequel, but what are the rest to do?

Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Fit and Brawl within the space of three months is hardly barren. It reminds me of the awesome Christmas DS had when they released Animal Crossing, Mario Kart and Brain Age 2 in the same couple of months.
