This makes me rage. Who in the hell thinks this is a good idea? Metal Slug 3 in its native resolution > every piece of "HD" art ever made.

...Oh this was JUST announced?!

Could a mod change the title to "Metal Slug 3 announced for Steam"

Stealth beta and announcement. I'm wondering how soon it'll be now that they have some experience with KoF '13.

That game was a massive improvement on PC thanks to the reworked netcode. Too bad there wasn't enough players local to where the "improved netcode" didn't mean squat for me. :(

Impressions on the netcode from some guy on Twitter (who has... a fair amount of experience with game networking -- he's written unofficial netplay clients for multiple doujin games in the past, among other things):
So I'm in Metal Slug 3 beta (thanks, haha), gave it a whirl on netplay. It's GGPO or GGPO-like rollbacks! Actually playable netplay!
Sounds like a massive upgrade over KoFXIII PC, which was a huge upgrade to begin with. SNK with legit netcode?!?

Did they kinda just give your keys randomly? I'm kinda confused how they're selecting people.

I had posted in that thread on the Steam hub, I got two friends requests (SNK.Prog_Jace and SNK.Prog_Jim) and Jim gave me two steam keys, one for me, and one to send to a friend to try out the multiplayer.

Game has options for a smoothing filter and scanlines,

I am planning on making a video if possible, but I'm worried about the potential noise from my arcade stick, if I do, what video set up would everyone prefer?

Scanlines seem too strong. Tell them to look at Third Strike/Capcom's implementation of it for OE. I dunno if it's your screenshots capping it differently than the actual game, but yeah... Needs to be "softer."

Looks better in motion than it does in the screenshots for sure, but I'll try it out on my desktop PC tommorow and if I do find it too strong I'll bring it up in the beta forums

They should really just port Original KOF '98 & KOF 2002 UM over; those are the most popular KOF games alongside KOF XIII.

They were when KoF '13's beta was leaked. But they apparently dropped development on those before releasing '13. I'm wondering how well Steam sales were for '13 to where they may consider reworking on their work (netcode?) for the 98 and 02 UM's.

Thanks for the screens. Looks like they're going with straight bilinear for the filtered look; I wish bicubic was a more popular choice for that, since it gives it just the right amount of blending without going full-on vaseline.

So I've gotten in for the closed beta and let me say this: there's framerate drops on segments where the game gets hectic.

The game looks stretched out on 16:9 full screen on 1080*.

I'm not sure why this game goes for 5 credits when the game gets really hard on the last few levels (I assume it's more of a challenging and fun aspect).

I sucked six dicks to get this tag.

Since it's a direct emulation there's gonna be framerate drops because the original game had framerate drops. Think almost every Metal Slug game except maybe 6 had pretty bad framerate drops at points.

All of the screens are awful :( As usual, a classic game bashed out with fewer graphical options than an unofficial emulator would offer. Online is the only trinket this release brings to the table, and that's not enough to make it attractive.

If anything the game is an emulation of the Neo Geo home console ver. Every NG home console game offered 4 credits per player.

Welcome to Metal Slug.

Impressions:

The Video options regarding filters are pretty lame. biggest annoyance was the Scanline option.
Controller setup's easy enough, UI feels a bit amateurish. Hearing MArco say "O-KAY" every five seconds gets a bit annoying, too.
In game, when you get heavy explosives like the Rocket Launcher, there tends to be a bit of...slowdown? Framerate dips a tad, and this is in single player mode unfortunately. Though moving the the XBL version, I noticed the same framerate dippings going on.
Gameplay? It's Metal Slug 3. Can't get any better than that.
Gallery mode's neat. I like unlocking artwork.
Zombies are fucking stupid enemies in Metal Slug.

I'm impressed with the port single player wise. Tomorrow I'll try out the MP and test the netcode for myself.

I was just thinking the other day how is it possible all of the Metal Slugs weren't released on Steam ages ago. That's some mind boggling Nintendo like shit SNKP.

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Got my beta code. I'll check it out tomorrow and have some detailed impressions/comparisons to the other versions of the game. I might also stream it briefly... we'll see.

I did it and they haven't given me one yet. ;~; I also did the twitter and facebook stuff!

Hmm... I don't know why. I posted a message about "wanting to help with bug testing", maybe that's why I got an invite within a minute of posting.

I also did the twitter stuff but didn't get anything there.

As for the framerate issues, fraps reports a solid 60fps at all times so far (only played up to the end of level 3). The slowdown is just part of the game as far as I know.

Wonderful. Best game in the series. Basically, 3, X and 1 are the ones to play.
(I actually really like 2, and completed it in the arcades)

It's only a shame that releases like this can't get an attractive CRT/RGB filter option, and instead get this garbage.

If you look in Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Metal Slug 3\resources\game you'll see that there's a file for the scanline filter and the 2x scale "filter".

I don't know anything about making filters for pixel based games, but perhaps if they don't include any other official filters it won't be too hard to just replace these files with better filters.

Edit: the filters are .fsh and .vsh files and display as plain text in notepad. Seems like if I knew how to write these it wouldn't be hard to rewrite them.

Metal Slug 3 beta? What now? I know they are adding online but I just find the concept of a beta for a game released so long ago a really funny thing.
