Once again the wheel has turned and it's time for a new season of cartoons to appear on Japanese television. And, once more, I'm bored enough to provide images and commentary; thankfully, the Internet provides the best possible technology with which to slag off something I know nothing about, and I plan on taking advantage of this miracle of modern living to the fullest. Nevermind that I've barely had a chance to watch any of last season's shows, I'm going to bodly forge ahead and start ragging on the latest batch. Thanks to AndrewLB for a list of what's being released this spring, as well as animeblogger.net's new season wiki, which provides rough synposes for several shows I know absolutely zilch about.

ayumi_p.gif

Magikano - Hapless dork is born into a magical family without powers. Fortunatly, harem maids show up to provide wacky hijinx. Woo.

Major 2nd Season - More of that baseball show I hear is so good but am putting off watching until I finish Touch. It may be a while before I get around to Major at this rate, but I'm told it's great.

id_mv1.jpg

id_mv2.jpg

Wings of Rean - Honestly, your guess is as good as mine. Mecha and stuff? Sure, what the hell. Looks to have a bit of a Dunbine flair to it, but without the overt fantasy setting.

character_top1.jpg

Saint Seiya Hades Chapter - God armor and stair climbing! Woo!

warukyu-re3.jpg

UFO Princess Valkyrie Bride of Seireibushi - Is this based on a H game? If not, it's missing out on a great opportunity.

alice.jpg

Kagihime Monogatari Eikyu Alice Rondo - Or "Key Princess Story, Eternal Alice Rondo". Catchy title, eh? A young man obsessed with Alice in Wonderland sees the title character magically appear and suddenly it's all harem, all the time. I do give them credit for having a character named "Liddell", however.

amaenaideyo.jpg

Amaenai de Yo!! Katsu!! - Because you (or a gaggle of creepy Japanese fanboys) demanded it, a second season of the Buddhist monestary fanservice show. Yay?

main01.gif
main02.gif

Kinnikuman II Ultra Muscle2 - Yet more Kinnikuman. I'm vaguely tempted to dig up my M.U.S.C.L.E. figure collection, but not to actually watch the show it's based off of.

topimg_02.jpg

Rakugo Tennyo Oyui - Six women are summoned to the Edo period where magic stones turn them into "celestial nymphs". Yawn.

fatestaynight3ix.jpg

Fate/Stay Night - Pre-licensed by Geneon, this looks to be a bishoujo game adaptation masquerading as fantasy adventure. No, I'm not sure how that works, either. From the director of "Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito" aka "Look At My Big Fucking Hat"!

key.gif

Lemon Angel Project - Meanwhile, the show that sounds like it should be porn is about a bunch of teenage idol singers. Go figure. No, wait, it turns out "Lemon Angel Project" was the name of a 1987 three member idol group whose members were all porn anime voice actresses. FAIRY DUST~!

soreyuki.jpg

Soreyuke Tetsunoshin - Yeah, this is just a kid's show, but it's still nice to see that Spuds MacKenzie is getting work again.

tactical.jpg

Tactical Roar - In the future, anti-pirate battleships will be crewed entirely by hot babes. From the director of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch! Oh, joy.

Continued next post.

Kage Kara Mamoru! - I'd be tempted to dismiss this entirely if it didn't bear a striking similarity to the awesome early 80s ninja comedy Sasuga no Sarutobi. In this case, our ninja hero is more of a pudgy nebish than a rotund pervert and it's been shoved through the harem show filter, so it'll probably suck, but I'm still going to give it a shot.

top_mainimg_n03.jpg

Yomigaeru Sora - Rescue Wing - Rescue helicopters, the animated series. There's just not much more to say than that.

ayakashi.jpg

Ayakashi - The English tagline is "Japanese Classic Horror", which appears to be dead on - ghost stories set in feudal Japan. Could be great, could be dull; I'm curious to know who's directing it.

nerima.jpg

Nerima Daicon Brothers - Holy shit that looks awesome. Dig the trailer that loads when you visit the official website.

2nd_01-004.jpg
2nd_01-003.jpg

2nd_01-005.jpg

Playball Second - More baseball anime second season action! Woo!

funny-pets.jpg

Funny Pets - FUCKING AWESOME!

girl-meets-girl.jpg

Kashimashi - Girl Meets Girl - GIRL MEETS GIRL! FUCKING AWESOME! Well, okay, it's a gender bending comedy/romance, but still GIRL MEETS GIRL, FUCK YEAH!

hantsuki.jpg

Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora - Or "Looking Up At The Half-Moon". From animeblogger.net: "When Yuichi was a sophomore of high school, he was hospitalized. There he met a girl of the same age, Rika. She was quite beautiful, but very selfish. His boring days in the hospital became noisy being annoyed by her. Meanwhile, he knew the true reason why she acted so selfish." Yeah, what they said.

meine-liebe.jpg

Meine Liebe - Bishounen ahoy!

rec_01.gif

REC - Romance about a normal guy who meets a woman who wants to be a voice actor. This wouldn't be terribly exciting, except that it's being directed by Ryutaro Nakomura, who also directed Lain and Kino no Tabi. Intriguing! Of course, he also directed Legend of Crystania, so don't get all your hopes up.

index-j_01.gif

Binchotan - Cute character mascot hijinx about a girl with a piece of charcoal on her head.

precure.jpg

Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash Star - Oh, look, more Pretty Cure. Yawn.

ergo-proxy.jpg

Ergo Proxy - Now, this is more like it. SF adventure produced by Manglobe (Samurai Champloo), directed by Shuko Murase (Samurai Champloo, Witch Hunter Robin), and scripted by Dai Sato (Bebop, Champloo, Eureka 7, GitS:SAC, Eternal Family, holy shit this guy is awesome). Dig the trailers. Alas, this won't be out until the end of February, but at least we've all got something to look forward to.

papillion.jpg

Papillon Rose - Meanwhile, there's another season of this to look forward to. Sigh.

Ergo Proxy looks great, like Witch Hunter Robin style with Cowboy Bebop animation.

Finally, Saint Seyia Hades ending ... but we already know the ending since it's the starting point of the last movie ...

Major 2 is good so far, but i doubt they can make it as great as the first season, not as much drama.

Ergo Proxy is the only one that interests me, anime is in a pretty bad slump judging by the past few seasons. Will wait and see what others think of the rest incase there is a hidden gem among them but I'm not too hopefull.

Wow, that's a whole lot of crap.

Only thing I'm looking forward to is Ergo Proxy, which I've been anticipating for a while, I hope it turns out well.

I could really use another season of Genshiken or something in that vein.

Doesn't the Hellsing OVA start later this month?

Anyway, I've been looking forward to Ergo Proxy for a while now, and REC might be worth a look based solely on who it's directed by. I've also heard that Major is great, but I haven't looked into it.

Otherwise, wow, that is one weak lineup. Just scrolling through that was depressing.

Shouldn't that be Winter '06, and yeah season looks bad for people that can't stand moe/harem shows... and well, that's not me. :D
Anyway so far just saw first Magikano episode, gave me few laughs and it wasn't bad overall except for main male character that needs to die.
Other stuff I'm looking forward are F/SN, Rec, Binchou-tan, Kagemamo, Hantsuki and Kasimasi (manga is sort of amusing). Ergo Proxy is kinda trying too hard to look cool, animation is f* amazing though, we'll see.

A new season of Genshiken would totally save this travesty of a season. Daikon and Proxy and maybe even that kids show might be worth picking up. Funny Pets just looks weird, I don't know what to make of it. Everything is is completely generic and standard.

Not too much I'm all that interested in.. Might check out a few first episodes of some of the titles though and maybe continue them. But overall, seems to be mostly a blah looking season again. But who knows. Maybe a few of the titles will turn out great..

Dead

well not really...yet
Ergo Proxy is going to be fucking fantastic. New Manglobe anime + Dai Sato (Probably my fav writer in anime currently, seriously as Fnord said, this guys resume speaks for itself) as chief writer, how can that possibly go wrong.

Other than that bleh. More looking forward to rest of the year especially two new Bones shows :D one of them being directed by Hiroshi Nishikiori which should be pretty interesting even if it is another shoujo show (guess that's the theme over at Bones this year heh)

Thanks for reminding me that 95% of all anime is generic bullshit.

That remaining 5% is usually really fucking good though.

Arrrgh, Ergo Proxy is the only one I'm anticipating, but because I've been anticipating it for so long, it makes the season look better than it actually is. :(

Well I hope there's a few surprises. I hope. :(

Sounds fun. I liked Geneshaft, and this sounds similar.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
Ergo Proxy is the only one that looks interesting to me. But knowing how bored I'll be between episodes of Eureka 7 and after Monster ends, I wouldn't be surprised if I also pick up Kage Kara Mamoru, Ayakashi, Yomigaeru Sora, and Tactical Roar.

Now of course I haven't seen any of these shows yet, but a lot of this looks like boring garbage. I thought Fall 2005 was bad except for a few standouts, but this is even worse.

Kashimashi would have been five billion times better if the main character was never a boy. As it is now, it caters to chauvinistic japanese fanboy dreams (since they can't stand the idea of a real lesbian relationship, but they like the fantasy of a boy who turns into a girl and sleeps with a girl).

Is this really all there is to this season? Jesus, Fate/Stay Night looks like the only thing worth watching.

What you say is so true. =(
But I just pretend he was a lesbian trapped in a boys body who then was turned into a girl. It really works if you think about this way! o.@

Im a sucker for this sort of stuff.

Ergo Proxy is the only one looking really interesting for now, sure it's going to be style over substance, but so were Samurai Champloo and Dead Leaves, besides I usually watch shows like that for production values alone. Also Wings of Rean is directed by good ol' Tomino, so it may be worth a shot.

I'll also check Nerima Daicon Brothers for the great character designs and Yomigaeru Sora - Rescue Wing for the seemly promising production staff.

At least we still have new Oshii(Tachigui the "superlivemation" :lol), Kon(Paprika) and Morimoto(Sachiko) films along with the ultrapromising 4°C's Genius Party to look forward later this year.

Oh yeah, episode 1 of Rean was pretty good. Prequel to Aura Battler Dunbine IIRC.

Yup, it's Tomino's adaptation of his Dunbine prequel novels.

As for Ergo Proxy, it was pre-licensed by Geneon ages ago, but that won't stop the fansubbers.

REC has potential. Kino's Journey and Lain were both awesome, the storyline sounds like a bore but it could be well directed or soemthing, meh.

Yay new season!

Too bad Ergo Proxy is the only one that looks remotely good.

In other news... I cannot wait to see what Bones will pump out next after Eureka 7.

From the other thread:

Ohran High School Host Club

Broadcast Station: Nihon TV
Original Work: Bisco Hatori
Director: Takuya Igarashi
Series Writer: Yoji Enokido
Character Designer/Assistant Art Director: Kumiko Takahashi
Animation Production: BONES

Plot Summary: Haruhi Fujioka is a scholarship student at exclusive Ouran High School, where it turns out that the bespectacled, short-haired Haruhi is the only student from a lower-middle class family in attendance. Then, to make matters worse, one day she breaks an $80,000 vase that belongs to one of the campus clubs: a mysterious outfit called the "Host Club," consisting of six super-rich (and gorgeous) guys. Mistaking Haruhi for a boy at first, they force her to work for the club to bay the damages, but when she proves to be a hit with the female students who come to be charmed and entertained, the guys decide it's more fun keeping up the charade...

Yea... Anyways, here's hoping REC doesn't suck.

Gotta be kidding. Maybe FMA then Eureka 7 took a bigger hit to their production values than they thought it would..

Harem, moe, harem, moe, harem, moe, shounen, boys love. Good thing there are some interesting titles in the remaining 5%.

The usual ratio of wheat to chaff usually means I get just enough good shows to watch that I can usually keep from getting behind. That hasn't stopped me from getting behind with Pani Poni Dash, Mushishi, and even Kamichu, though.

Rescue Wings is giving me a vibe somewhere in between Planetes, Starship Troopers, and Zipang, which means that it could either be realistic and compelling, pretentious and not up to potential, or just dull. I do want to see that Dunbiney thing, and I'm always always always up for more Japanese ghost stories.

Also, re: Funny Pets: what the HELL. The characters look like they just stepped out of a 1930s Merrie Melodie. I have to see that.

BONES has really calmed down on the number of productions at one time. They were on a roll at the beginning, but working on Wolf's Rain, Scrapped Princess, Full Metal Alchemist, Mars Daybreak and the Rahxephon film at one time (either in production, pre-production, post-preduction) took a toll on them.

It's extremely hard to define in any -one- particular way, but in general relates to the class of art and plot design, near-pandemic in most "romantic" visual culture nowadays, of (usually female) characters that the reader is intended to be attracted to, desire to protect, or be calmed by due to their innate cuteness and simplicity of character. It's almost always done self-consciously by the creators, although whether it's a shameless sop for fanbase (like M.o.E, a studio basically founded to capitalize on the trend, tends to create) or actually workable with the plot (like, say, Rozen Maiden) varies.

http://www.tyth.net/wordpress/?p=62 has put a lot more thought into it than I'm really capable of.

Edit: And to get back on topic, I'll be keeping an eye on Binchotan (as long as it can keep a nice surreal sense of humor and not pander to the pervs); Wings of Rean (because no one does giant robots quite like Tomino, and it'll help to know what's going on in a year or so when I'm playing a game with it in); Rescue Wings (if it's done well); and of course the Hellsing OAVs. Disgaea, too, although it's not running until later in spring.

Aside from Ouran High, BONES is also working on a series called Juuousei, which I know absolutely nothing about.
