Seeing this pop up on twitter now.

Some crazy dancing sci-fi/dancing game video linked in this tweet: https://twitter.com/hima_zinn/status/587502328573517825
Game is using Unity 5.

How is reprojected 120 fps better than "pure" 60 fps? I don't think I've fully understood it.
Head-motion is law in VR land.
120hz reprojection builds ontop of 'pure 60fps'. Every second frame is the previous 'pure' frame reprojected with the image slightly warped in the direction of your head-movement. Makes it all feel more responsive (120 fps also makes the image brighter within low-persistance mode as the screen is totally black between frames. 90fps and above also reduces headache potential).

My bet is Morpheus won't launch until Q4 2016, but still interested.

My bet is that Sony is having real tough time/taking a long time to get good indies on Morpheus and they really don't want to put their best 1st party on it with the possible exeption of MM. Unless E3 this year convinces me I'm having a real hard time believing that Morpheus can take off. Demos are not enough no matter how cool they are. 3rd paties will not touch VR with a ten foot pole.

They probably could release it relatively fast but there just isn't any software for it. Of course PC will be the primary platform for the true killer app that is VR porn.

Japanese developers getting on board with this thing early is a good thing. I'm looking forward to seeing what crazy applications they come up with.

Sony is actively requesting that developers make fully featured games for Morpheus, not just tech demos. I guess we'll see how successful they are in about a year.

Definitely! The Japenese always have such a unique voice to add to the world, and I can't wait to see where they take VR. I couldn't be more excited about all of this.

Not surprising that they would show it off at a Unity event. Lots of devs in Japan are using / learning about Unity and even some of the bigger names such as Bandai Namco with one of their larger cashcow IPs which was the arcade card game which was aimed at girls アイカ.ツ!.

Id say thats more just a tech demo with Unity-chan the Japanese mascot for Unity.

More interesting is this tweet

Seems like the next 3.50 system software with the Vita will allow for more memory usage with the system for games.

No Summer lesson?
They went from wanting to live demo it last year to it completely disappearing

Edit: oh, unity only

I agree. The way they take on problems is different from west. I'm sure they'll come up with wonderful and interesting stuff but also some weird stuff involving tentacles.

Japanese are going to LOVE virtual reality.

Not exactly, since a lot more people here tend to complain about either headaches or getting sick with FPV type of games. With how VR works can imagine its not going to help the issue any for the average person.

Good point. But maybe the fact that you can control the camera with your own "head" and 120hz update may lessen the impact for some type of games. But, the threat is real.

A well-designed VR game should be less likely to make you sick than playing something in first-person on a screen.

First person perspectives that don't involve a ton if movement like with a voyeuristic sort of experience shouldn't be an issue at all. I think there will be a ton of demand in Japan for this kind of thing.

Not really, considering 1 its not going to be cheap and 2 the average person isnt really interested in head mounted displays. Basically its going to be a core market interested in this and not the everyday person.

Two totally different things.

I feel like you're just being blanket pessimistic about VR rather than understanding what I'm saying about the Japanese market specifically.

I disagree anyways. Your idea that you know what the average person wants or will 'deal with' sounds more like projection than an informed stance.

How is reprojected 120 fps better than "pure" 60 fps? I don't think I've fully understood it.

It's better because of reduced latency; the motion-to-photon time; the time from you move your head until you see the update on the display. Reprojection as a framerate doubler from 60 to 120 however is a tradeoff that developers often will be (ab?)using to do quick ports of existing software, or to "save" rendering power for more detail. Native 120 if possible is always the best option because reprojected frames is only a 2D prediction/warp made from interpolating the last rendered frame against headtracking data. This may create judder, ghosting-like effects.

Reprojection/Timewarp will always exist to smooth out latency transients during process strain, but reduced IQ is a drawback that will hopefully ensure reprojection to have a short lifetime as a cheap interpolation device.

I think reprojection is here to stay because:-

1. The PS4 simply doesn't have the GPU horsepower for AAA graphic quality games at 120fps.

2. I think reprojection technology will improve to reduce or eliminate the artefacts.

3rd paties will not touch VR with a ten foot pole.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the amount of crow eaten and back sliding over the next couple of years when VR hits. It's going to amazing.
