Indie Games 2016 [August] Lets play some Indies!

I agree. Too many games are released these days.

Pan-Pan is out. Potentially good, no review yet.

Also, The Turing Test has decent reviews: http://opencritic.com/game/3034/the-turing-test

Didn't even realise Turing Test was out so soon. Damn, there really are too many games to play at the moment.
Look at this. Just look

Four Sided Fantasy - 8/30 (Thankfully I already backed this)
Hue - 8/30
Turing Test - 8/30
Tahira - 8/31
The Warlock of Firetop Mountain - 8/31
RunGunJumpGun - 8/31
Redout - 9/2
Seasons After Fall - 9/2

The Bunker
Rive - 9/13

For me, it's Alone With You (out earlier this week), Turing Test, The Bunker, Event[0], and Virginia that have my attention through September.

This might be weird, but Turing Test is as long as those few reviews say (~12 hours), I think I'll put that off and pick it up in the winter when I have a little more time since I already have enough long games on my plate. It was on my radar for the past couple months though, so I'm glad to hear some good things (even if it doesn't seem like many places have reviewed it yet).

Similarly, I will probably save The Bunker and maybe Virginia as well until a little later in the year, when I can play them with friends. So just AWY and Event[0] for the time being.

But I'm sure more things will get announced to mess with this...

I'm definitely in for Event[0]. Will probably wait for The Bunker to release on mobile, and wait for Virginia reviews

There is a demo for Virginia.

There is also a demo for this game that I want to try.

I have also discovered a French platformer game which was kickstarted last December and will be released on September 21. There is a demo.

And also for this game to be released in 2017: Enigma Prison.

This is cool. Dev is working on an unnamed parkour rhythm game with rotoscoped animations

Yeah it's really well done technically and it's also the weirdest fighting game related thing I've seen outside of wacked out MUGEN stuff. Curious stuff

I never got around to Road to Ballhalla right away when I got my key in the thread because of WoW. So now that I've played a little bit I just wanted to give my story on what I experienced.

I'm up to the fifth level. Half of my time was watching my roommate play and that was infuriating. When I think of game design and things game designers must do to try to use visual signals and such to help the lowest common denominator along my roommate is that nightmare. I believe it was the first level that has the little side room that says something like, "Completely Optional Path." She had collected the little light orbs up to that point but instead of going down there to get those ones she moves on and I point out she missed them. She loudly exclaims, "How was I supposed to know that wasn't the right way!?" I don't know how to answer that when the words (which she hates reading in games) states that it's an optional side path but also the entire screen is visible and it's 100% obvious the path is a tiny room that loops before you have to go back and continue on. This happened multiple times in the first couple levels she played.

I can't even imagine what it must be like as a developer and watching people play your game and also get feedback based off of behavior of people like my roommate.

All that said she had fun until it took too long for her to figure out the final room of the second or third level with the three switches and lasers. She actually got the upper left group by setting the lasers, accidentally dying, and respawning on the left side with it open to her.

I took over and did a couple levels and I thought it was really solid. It plays well, I like the boost risk over the panels, and the music compliments it really well. The only thing I dislike is until you complete a level you don't know how many respawns until a token is deducted. I don't know if it's the same amount for every level but I'm assuming it is. And perhaps I missed it somewhere but I'm generally against information not being known until after a first time through a level as I'm less likely to replay an entire level once I reach the end but if I die a couple times before finishing I may opt to restart and just go again. There's a fair chance I simply missed this being surfaced.

I would recommend it to others as I've liked what I've played, the price is low, and for me it scratches the itch of wanting to collect everything in a level and having it unlock things.

Haha yeah, "how on earth doesn't she/he not understand this OBVIOUS THING?!" is something you have to get used to as a dev. I've probably watched over 100 hours of people playing Ballhalla and there were lots of these moments. :D Though in most cases I think I've managed to make stuff clearer by slightly adjusting the level layout, adding new text hints, changing the UI etc.

There is this scavenger hunt in the game where you spawn on invisible floor tiles and have to roll the right pattern to the final reward by following clues and solving secret areas. Next to the spawn is a HUGE text that says something like "Don't try to find the pattern with trial & error." and I've watched people "trial & erroring" that path for like 30 minutes, always falling down and starting from scratch, right beside the text that tells them NOT to do this. Ugh. :D Some even complained about "bad game design" while doing this.

Glad you liked it so far! :) It's always the same grading, <=2 respawns for all 4 Respawn Tokens, <= 10 for 3, <= 25 for 2. That's why I don't show it at the start or during the levels, this shouldn't be hard to learn/memorize and would only clutter the interface.

The streamersI watch don't read either. It's simultaneously frustrating and amusing when they miss obvious mechanics explained in the tutorial lol

I assumed that was case but without knowing exactly where the hard limits were I only figured out the first breakpoint. Not a huge issue but it's the one UI thing I noticed.

Hopefully the game is doing well for you.

Drives me insane. It's the same issue people have watching the guys from Giant Bomb as they routinely ignore instructions on the screen thinking it slows down the videos but somehow they don't realize the extra minute of fumbling slows it down much worse?

I don't get it with my roommate because she plays other games that have more systems or are story-heavy and she'll get through those if I'm not there. But once I'm around she turns illiterate and bumbles around constantly. Madness.

5 minutes before Overland can be tried on itch.io. You have to pay for first access.

First Access is our paid alpha program, which includes exclusive features like a private developer forum, access to constant updates, and the chance to help us make the end of the world even more interesting with your feedback.

Since Overland is still very incomplete, we are building our audience a little bit at a time by selling the game in limited quantities. Whenever we reach interesting internal milestones, we’ll do our best to make more keys available to more players.

And this time, there is no limited supply of keys.

What started as an off-hand comment on twitter in late 2013 became a full-time job for 4 people in 2014, and Finji's main project in 2015. Developed largely behind closed doors at that time, Overland made its publicly playable debut at the GDC Mild Rumpus on March 4, 2015, and has since appeared at the XOXO Festival, IndieCade, PAX, E3, and other events.

The Overland First Access program started in April 2016 as a new way of running an alpha. Three rounds of alpha keys were made available for public sale in April (500 keys), May (500), and June (1000). The longest any key was available was about 72 hours. This stage of the First Access program was a huge help for Overland and had a dramatic impact on what we worked on and why. Huge thanks to alt-games storefront itch.io for making it possible!

Overland First Access opened up with unlimited keys on August 30 2016. We are currently planning on completing Overland sometime in 2017.
