I know this doesn't mean shit coming from me, but I basically scrolled through quickly and my brain went "okay, I see mario and a bunch of PS3 and 360 games... wait, Zelda? Huh? *stops scrolling and looks at pictures and post*

You DID choose a lot of bad shots from the PS3/360 games, though. Especially Gears.

Wasn't the shots chosen by jimbo?

They actually did that in N64 era. They re-released games like StarFox, Mario Kart, Goldeneye for 4800 yen. I don't remember what they call. It was something similar to "Player's Choise."

geez sucks to be a japanese nintendo gamer, no rentals and rarely any price drops. Do they have places to buy used games?

They announced a Shin Megami Tensai sequel waaaaaaaay back in 2005 when everyone was sure the PS3 was the undisputed market leader. No other information have been heard since then and the only next gen game they have is a port of Trauma Center for the Wii that did very well, especially in North America.
I keep hearing how well Trauma center sold on the wii. does anyone actually have some numbers for that game so I can see HOW WELL it did? Im genuinely curious.

I thought used games in Japan were a relatively new thing for them, with the law passed only a few years ago.

To try and answer such a thing in detail would be difficult and require a loooong view, but I can provide this graph of cumulative yearly hardware sales for 2000 through 2007 thus far. While this year and last year are clearly above the rest, I don't see a clear downward trend. Before 2005 it seems the previous few years had been below 2001, but since 2001 had the end of PS2 shortages, GBA launch, and GCN launch, I'm not surprised it was particularly high.

2004 was a bit lower, in terms of units.

I also note the quote you gave talked about hardware sales being down in terms of money spent, but I wonder if there were prominent price drops?
By this rate, how much do you think will be sold this year?

To me it looks like from mid 2002, late 2002, 2003, and 2004 were each lower than the year before which would indicate a 2.5 year downward trend which was recovered partly in 2005.

Same time, every single week. It's mentioned in the OP, if you forget when. If you still can't add it up, it's about 3.5 hours from now, but I can tell you what it's going to say, if you're in a hurry?

Wii - 46k-56k
PS3 - 6.5k-9.5k
360 - 2k-5k

those seem reasonable. But I suspect he was referring to creamsugar's posting multiples (wii is 6 times PS3, PS3=PS2, etc) rather than the official data.

Yeah, true enough. I guess what I should've said is that without seeing what the regular trend was throughout previous generations, that slowdown from the 2001 peak doesn't look very scary to me; even the lows of 2003 and 2004 brought them to the same total 2000 reached.

I'm better at organizing the data prettily than making predictions, but considering that so far the total looks to be about 50% greater than last year, and a total of 14 million was reached last year, 20 million seems quite possible. 10 million DS, 6 million Wii, 4 million assorted Sony systems, X360 for change?

NOTES:

1. Wii is still very supply constrained. Any store that does have them doesn’t have them for long. Hiro at Famicon Dojo was shipped his first new Wii in weeks. He was so happy yesterday to be able to take down his “sold out” sign. But on my way to work today I noticed the sign was back up.

2. DS lite is even easier to find this week. Most stores have them. This is the second week that I have seen the system readily available. In general, it is too soon to tell, but for this week specifically, it is not supply constrained.

3. Playstation 3 is plentiful. I cannot get an exact count because with limited shelf space not all of their stock is but in the front. With Wii being as rare as it is, every unit always goes on the shelf, with the PS3 most at kept in the back. My number represents only what I can see to count. This week there were more to see since Sony was pushing a Casino Royal bundle and hade a lot of them out on the floor.

4. If stores are getting this bundle, and it is replacing non-bundled systems, the stores must be selling at least a few PS3s.

5. Biohazard 4 was available at every store, however it had only gone on sale a few hours before I did my store search for this week. And I saw a few copies being sold even as I was there. I also expect the actual count to be higher. There were probably more in the back.

6. Forza 2 is not supply constrained in any way, but there are fewer copies than when I checked last week, so some one is clearly buying them.

7. Ouendan 2 was jut as lard to find this week as last week. However this might not impact the sales much. I asked one store that was sold out if they planned to get any more and they said, “If you want it I can order it for you, but we aren’t planning to get any more”. I don’t know if this is representative of other shops though. Ouendan 2 is either supply constrained or if met the exact amount of demand. I would still go with supply constrained but I will be the first to admit my possible bias toward this game.

8. Hokutou no Ken Pachinko for the Wii isn’t supply constrained and does not seem to be selling as well as the Playstation 2 versions, but those titles are known to have very long legs and keep selling over time. Still I think supply has met demand. Most stores only ordered a few copies of this title.

9. Blu-Ray continues to confuse me. Wanpaku is getting rid of their Blu-Ray titles. They weren’t selling and they decided to sell them off cheap and use the space for something else. Yet, Best Denki recently expanded their own Blu-Ray section. It seems the smaller stores are leaving this one to the bigger stores. The video rental shops are still transitioning from VHS to DVD.

10. Thank you everyone for your good wishes on my engagement. I really appreciate it. And thank you to junkwaffle for the awesome logo he made for me.

They did not restock it? :)

Thanks for the report. Looks like DSL inventory is up this week.

No, and he has no plans to. It took more than 4 months to sell that first one and the tiny profit he made selling it (less than $10) dose not compensate for 4 months of lost shelf space. He put up a sign saying he will order a PS3 for anyone who wants one though.

If someone is going to buy a PS3 they are going to do it at a store with a point card (that would get totally filled up with such a big purchase) and large selection of games available. It makes no sense for the smaller shops to carry PS3 hardware at thins point. It is a big financial risk to buy something you might not be able to sell. The only reason small shops carry hardware at all is to sell the more profitable software with the system at time of purchase, but when no one is buying the software either...

Anyway I don't expect to see a PS3 in Famicom Dojo until FFXIII.

I thought that was an interesting choice too. It seems that peace is best represented as a flattened panda. And when you think about it like that, the world could indeed be a better place.

I know this is a joke, but I would like to offer a few observations.

We will have to wait for sales of course. But I think it is a matter of Nintendo finally, finally making enought of them that the store actually have a product to sell. If the number are really low this week, perhaps the bubble really has broken, but I don't think so.

As for Biohazard 4, I was surprised to see the amount of interest the game was generating. There were always people around the Kiosk showing the video and the stores had rather large displays. I would have to know how many Capcom shipped to know if the number that were still left at 5:00pm on the launch day is good or bad. Personally I will be very interested to see what the numbers are for this game.

Two things I want to know.

1. What is the deal with Japans fascination with Resident Evil?

2. Everyone talking about Trauma Center in various threads, someone tell me how much the damn game sold.

seeing these numbers around the world for 5 months now really make the wait for E3 + TGS complete hell.

the amount of suprises is gonna be insane. there should be atleast 1-2 big games coming from all devs worth their weight.
