HEY! C'MON C'MON: It's the Giga Powered Neo Geo Appreciation Thread

Arcades started to face a decline since then. Emulators also happened around that time. I remember that even my Pentium 2 could run them flawless. Games would be emulated at the day of release, Slug 2 for example, quite sure I played that in 1998 on PC. It was deadly for a small company like SNK. On the other hand, I would've never known about or bought Last Blade if it weren't for emus. Local arcades stopped carrying 2D and especially niche SNK IP. I was floored when I first played it and needed to have an original.

Yeah, I remember thinking it was kinda fucked up when games like Last Blade 2 and Garou were available on emulators like right as those games came out. As I recall, the MAME dudes also kinda objected to it because they didn't want to emulate anything that was less than 2 years old, due to it cutting into the developer's ability to profit from it.

I think the scene ultimately backed away, but those roms still found their way to the net around the day of release. Emus were easily hacked to be able to load those games

Capcom had a better deal with their CPS-2, only a select few people could hack it I think.. and they held roms and emus off until those games were fairly old.

I do recall it wasn't until around late 2000 or early 2001 that the XOR tables for decrypting the games' protection came out, so they definitely had that going for them. After that, it was open season, but at least the games had been out for a while.

Junior, please.
I still rate Baseball Stars 2 as one of the best sports games of all time.

Everything in that game is geared towards having fun. I'm not even that big of a baseball fan, but slamming some home runs and catching guys out just as their foot is about to hit the base is just incredible.

It only takes about 1 minute to fire up that game and be having the time of my life.

I have the Dreamcast version of this, but still I can't say I'm not jealous...

Here's the rest of my collection. I have a Neo Geo X, but it doesn't get along well with the big boys here.

The AES system inside is immaculate. Stuff is even still in the baggies. The original memory card is inside (the one out there is a spare).

That US World Heroes 2 cart is up for trade if someone is interested. Would love to get almost any US game I don't have.

So out of curiosity, does anyone know if running Neo CD games on an emulator takes the load times out? It should be a surefire solution, but I think back to certain PS1 games (like the Chrono Trigger port) that were fucked even if you loaded the games on a hard drive.

Dunno, might be a solution that makes some of the CD games that much more appetizing.

Top Tier OP. Enjoyable read.

But while the base hardware was very similar to the normal Neo Geo, CDs lost the advantage of cartridge's massive storage space. This led to certain games (particularly later releases) having some frames of animation cut.

Not sure what you meant to say here - even the biggest NeoGeo cart was much smaller than the capacity of a CD? The real problem with going to CD was latency (including load times). Pulling data off the disc takes so long that generally all the data you need needs to be cached in RAM first. (Some things can be streamed, and a lot of music of the era was just redbook streaming, but things like combat frames would be cached).

On a cart, the latency is usually so low and the transfer rate is so fast that you can afford to "just-in-time" it and pull off cart as needed. On some systems (like the GBA) cart access can even be faster than RAM access...

Neogeo CD outperformed the Saturn and Playstation when it came to 2D, I think it had 7MB RAM or so. But it wasn't enough memory to perfectly run the more demanding NG games.

Paired with the 1x CD-ROM player its just a bad machine, although the CD sound was very well done and the older games seem to have shorter load times and perfect performance.

What are Neo Geo fans like?

They're fucking assholes.

Haha it's true. Visit neogeo.com forums for an example :|

I always wished SNK did another RPG on the neogeo - like Crystalis 2 or something. Something to ad a bit of variety to the library of fighters and shooters. They did do Samurai Spirits RPG i guess but that never made it out of Japan. :(

I love this thread, but for what it's worth I've had really positive experiences with people in the NG community. Someone really rad over there even repaired my AES for me totally free of charge once. I'll never forget that!

SNK for life, yall!

Love the system and the games.
certified asshole, I suppose...

My first expsoure was walking into an electronics store during the NES days and seeing Baseball Stars running on it. Just the intro was a huge leap over what you could get at home. After writing it off as unattainable due to the crazy home system prices, I was shocked at how affordable MVS games were after the initial investment in a cabinet when I was on eBay over a decade ago. Fast forward to today and I think I own about half of the games for the system.

I think OP is omitting a few of the quality non-fighting games on the system. Here are some of my favorites:

I do, just about daily. There are some jerks for sure, but there are also people like the guy there who gave away the SNK vs Capcom: Chaos board that I now own, completely free of charge, out of gratitude for how much help the community provided for him.

NeoGeo brings back memories. Back in college, my friends (lifelong pals to this day) formed around all-nighters of Street Fighter and Samurai Showdown II. I went for broke because I was such a video game and fighting nut. Saved all of my part time Software Etc money, urged by hi-res Die Hard GameFan screenshots, and bought a Neo Geo. Could only afford ONE game: Samurai Showdown II.

You guys have to try to understand the insanity back then. IF you were a gamer in DC/MD/VA, Bonds were made in arcades: Springfield Mall. Marlow Heights. GameTime in VA. Cultural differences evaporated. Thugs and nerds met on common ground with a quarter and a character.

There was an arms race to see who could get the arcade experience at home. Granted, we were ALL broke and living in the city, but one guy would scrimp and save in order to buy that Super Gun arcade board, just to get real Street fighter at home so the fellas could have our epic weekend 'fight fest'. I had my Neo Geo and Sam Sho II, while another guy would beg, borrow, and steal, surfing through pawn shops to find the inevitable gold mine of overpriced-but-undervalued World Heroes, Fatal Fury, or King of Fighters cartridges.

Times were very different back then. This was before, EVO, mind you. Still, it's the same groups of guys, same camaraderie, even if their names and faces are a little different.

I loved my NeoGeo. But what I *really* miss is the gaming culture that went with it.

- Oh! and most of those beautiful background images? Last Blade and KoF had some of the most amazing 2D artwork you'll *ever* see. EVER.

Pouring one out for SNK.

something tells me ima be PMing people here about conversions one day, haha

So the next question for all you diehards... who took their headphones and memory card to the arcade back in the day? :)

when i first read bout that shit (either gamefan or EGM) i was so jealous, when the local arcade down here had machines with slots for em...no lie, i thought that shit was so baller, i wanted to see a kid rock one just to see it.

like to this day, i still ask my old friends, at that age i wasnt in a ghetto but still like six degrees away from friends knowing friends who knew a cousin's neighbor who got robbed by a dude a few blocks over who was said to have a neo-geo. i was the scrawny white kind on the block like "you think we could be friends with him? i mean yeah his pitbull's kinda scary but ive gotten bit over lesser stuff"

You would likely notice that you can't play most of the good Neo Geo games on it, but as far as accuracy, you'd be fine.

what are the better titles that aren't on there? im just waiting for a pricedrop on the mega pack myself

I maintain that Neo Turf Masters is the best golf game ever. Great music, too.

...can't believe ya'll have me wanting to play a golf game

Awesome thread for an awesome system!

I would remove any and all traces of the Neo-Geo X from the OP. It is a piece of dogshit wrapped in AIDS with a little herpes sprinkled in for flavor. I bought one on launch and the screen tearing, horrible HDMI output and audio problems were annoying but ultimately I could move on and enjoy the games. The Mega Pack comes out and I can't update the thing so I end up having to send the thing back to Tommo. I get the thing back 2 weeks later and start playing the new games and I run the battery down, so I decide to use the rocket cable to charge the unit and it KILLS my unit. Unacceptable.

Neo Turf Masters is brilliant and I love that I have a semi-legitimate way of playing it on neo hardware, however if you have a Wii, it's available on Virtual Console. It's absolutely worth the $9 or whatever it costs for a Neo game on there to buy it and play it for yourself.

This isn't the thread for it, but the Neo Geo Pocket Color version of NTF is super, too. Also worth owning, and very affordable.

I own Baseball Stars 2 in both AES and Virtual Console just because I don't have to fight over a TV if I get the urge to play now. :D

One day I will own a Big Red. I must. Four slot most likely. I know people often switch from AES to MVS, but I don't think I can do that. I just love the AES too much to part with it, especially now that I have a reasonable collection. No, it'll just be MVS for the stuff that's much cheaper there than it is on AES.

Man, Viewpoint is my jam.
I love that game so much. I vividly remember how amazing the music was for it being 1993, especially from the first stage. Was very disappointed with the music downgrade in the Genesis port.

I did like how the PS1 port used a freaking Todd Terry track though.

Proud owner of Neo-Geo CD, wanna fight about it?

...too cheap to get any other console lol...but people over charging for Metal Slug 1 and 2 CD are lame to the maximum extent of the word. Still need to track down Sonic Wings series. Last Resort is fun though. Mutation Nation has an amazing soundtrack. Also btw, is there any way to turn off infinite continues on the games?

Loved this console so much. I was finally able to convince my parents to buy one and got Burning Fight, War of Monsters, Fatal Fury and Sengoku. Also had a NeoGeo arcade cabinet with 3 Count Bout, Samurai Shodown 2, World Heroes 2, Fatal Fury 2 and a puzzle game that I forgot the name of. Cool thing about is is that you cram swap out the cartridges.

I wish the console would have had more diverse games. Can you imagine if it had platformers and JRPGs? Damn

I appreciate the Neo Geo.

If they were still cranking out games for it, I would still be playing them. Pizza Parlour KoF '94 forever.

I love SNK and the Neo Geo. Despite this, I am a real slacker.

this is all I've got as far as NG hardware, but it's a start. The 1C came with a UniBios 3.0. Got it from Jamma Nation X a while back. Bought a Neobitz encoder from the man himself and everything. It looks like the Omega CMVS kit may be right up my alley if I wanna jump back on the project.

so, like, the Neo Geo has games with some of the best music you will EVER hear. Got these two recently:

'98 and '99 ASTs should be coming my way shortly as well. But anyways yeah, Neo head, certified asshole, etc. reporting. This is usually what lunch looks like at my workplace (taken earlier today on a whim):

Check out my Neo.

loving this baller image

for real, no intention to buy anytime soon, but what are good prices for an AES (complete with at least 1 stick), CD, and some of the more recommended games? has this scene fluctuated nearly as much as say SNES, or largely remained steady?

probably been said but you CAN play MVS games on an AES console if you get a converter.

I'm currently using this consolized dead NeoGeo CD as an MVS machine:
CMVS.jpg

Recently installed a Unibios in it too, its a beast with RGB scart signal going to the TV and a separate speaker hooked up to it :D
CMVS2.jpg

i also have 2 Playstation controller adapters in it so its easy to play at events with a variety of joysticks/pads.

All I can say is that the neo geo forum, especially the war room, is like /b/ but with less porn and more hate. It's full of hate. You can clearly see that they even hate each other. They are bound together with their even bigger hate for 3D games.

They should rename the forum into "old-men-yelling-at-each-other-and-the-clouds"-forum

Heh i'd like to see someone ask them a queston about Metal Slug 3D or KOF Max impact.

EDIT: Wish setting game difficulties to MVS would allow for finite continues. Nothing worse than having to force yourself to stop playing after losing a certain amount of continues lol.

It is illegal to Tag Fish in Tag Fishing Sanctuaries by law 38.36 of the GAF Wildlife Act
So GAF now allows porn? ;)

I havent seen one in the works, but I think I remember someone saying it should be made?

EDIT: Still waiting on that Samurai Shodown RPG translation that never seemed to be finished. Even after getting the link to the thread, it seemed like it just devolved into people fighting and a dead end for the project. Would be nice if Aeon Genesis took over.

Didn't realize there was a Neo thread. I started buying MVS carts a couple months ago myself. Gathered all my random boxes and consolidated all my carts for a pic and realized I had 18 carts already! I have an MV-1FZ with Unibios already installed also. Just need a Supergun before I can finally play everything. :(

List of carts:

Aero Fighters 2
Art of Fighting 3 (JP)
Neo Turf Masters (JP)
Breakers Revenge
Fatal Fury Special (JP)
Real Bout Fatal Fury Special (JP)
Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 (JP)
Garou: Mark of the Wolves (JP)
Quest of Jongmaster (JP)
The King of Fighters 98 (JP)
The King of Fighters 2002 (JP)
The Last Blade 2
Magician Lord (JP)
Metal Slug X
Stakes Winners 2 (JP)
Windjammers
Metal Slug
World Heroes Perfect

This would be a great time to bring up Yatagarasu Attack on Cataclysm, an indie fighting game made by former SNK staff which needs your help on indiegogo with only 9 days left in its campaign.

More than a year ago Nicalis Inc. announced they would publish a 3DS port of the game, but after a long period of silence I was worried for the game's fate, but they just recently made this tweet which raised my spirits:

Seems ok, a few good games, but then again i paid 200 shipped for a region switch modded neo geo cd top loader packed with ff3, and im not sure if that was good (seemed decent to me). This was like a year and a half ago.

see, that sounds like a an awesome deal to me. consignment shop around here had a CD unit - granted, in box - and wanted like $600+ for it. the region switch was for the carts, yeah? are there are lotta good imports?

Considering Cyber-Lip is probably worth $200, yeah, that's a good deal. It's priced about right.

ah, okay. i really gotta youtube some of these games and see which ones i'd go for as well!

Well almost all of your CD games will end up being imports. I think that the CDs have both english and japanese on them, just the system region dictates what language/title screen/blood color is displayed. And unfortunately the CD system only plays CDs, no carts.

ahhh i was confused about the CD thing with region (i barely saw any copyright/region locks on discs from that era) and assumed we were talking carts...interesting

Yeah, its not as important as most region switches on consoles would be, but its nice to be able to read whats going on in an import title or have red blood / whatever else is different between NA and JP releases.

The Neo Geo is the one console that never received a bad game release. Every Neo Geo game I've played ranged from average to excellent. Probly the only console I can say that about.

been looking more & more into AES (especially unibios) and had to ask about the OP:

Can I play MVS games on my AES system, or vice versa?

No. AES games only work on an AES system, and MVS games only work on an MVS system. Despite that the same data is contained on both cartridges.

it was either racketboy's page or neo-geo forums, but i could've sworn i saw a converter! wait here it is:

bkIz6BG.jpg

is this not a common/viable option? MVS carts do indeed look quite a bit cheaper/easier to find, especially with multicarts or whatever they're called (swore i saw one on ebay with like 100 titles and it looked mostly legit!), and while having an XRGB mini makes me wanna look into supergun options, i'd really love to fulfill that baller childhood dream of having a proper/sexy AES setup one day.

ps we need to bother Yes Boss! or one of these dudes for a supergun/JAMMA thread so hard

*edit yeah PokéKong that indiegogo looks awesome, 5 days to go and they're edging closer...backed! does it have its own thread here? it prolly should
