Nintendo Digital Downloads - April 2009 (VC/WiiWare/DSiWare)

Kobun Heat said:
as opposed to analog downloads

Well, you never know with Nintendo!

But, yeah I know the title is hardly the most graceful ;-) Any better titles would be welcome.

So when are the usual DSi ware updates for Europe?

No-one knows yet. Give it a week or two and we should have a better idea.

I got Bubble Bobble Plus, and it's a bit of a letdown really. It doesn't feel as polished as Space Invaders Get Even! did (the menus are kind of bare and lacking in flair.) It's pretty much a remake of the original with some 3D models instead of the sprites, plus a quite nice rendition of the classic theme tune, and it has online leaderboards or something like that.

Unless the different modes offer something drastically different, I wouldn't recommend buying it.

Too bad there's no new DSiWare this week. How long did it take for the weekly schedule to kick in after the VC launched? I remember after WiiWare it took about a week after launch. I can't Imagine NoE going for a monthly schedule like Japan.

I noticed that NOE kicked it up to 3 Wiiware games this time. I wonder if they are going to switch off between Wiiware, DSiWare and VC over 3 weeks.

I'd probably still get it if it was closer to the arcade version than the NES version we got. Doesn't have to have frills, IMO. (though I've wondered what a Bubble Bobble Extreme might look like on occasion)

Of course, maybe I should just wait an eventual VCA version...

Yeah, the Standard mode is just a remake of the original arcade game. Try the Arrange mode, it has like 200 new levels. :]

I'm currently working on the European list of games released in other territories with a PAL version, but while working on it I found afew additions to the US list:

Released in Japan, had previous US version:
[GEN] Galaxy Force II
[GEN] Revenge of Shinobi
[GEN] Shadow Dancer
[TGCD] Dungeon Explorer 2

But seriously, 'digital downloads'? Of course they are.

Well, actually, from a CERTAIN point of view, if you were using a dial-up modem, there is an extent to which the transmission is conducted via an analog medium...

(Yes, I'm pushing it. I know.)

I claim VC/WiiWare/DSiWare thread #3, whenever the current thread dies.

So I bought equilibrio and played through propably half the levels (there are 64 I believe). 500 pts.

It is pretty fun; the wiimote (or balance board) tilts the level. Some levels you can turn 360°, others only a few degrees. There are different balls; the stone ball for example is quite fragile so you have to be careful; then there is the steel, rubber and paper ball (maybe more)

Three main modes;
* conquest - you progress level after level, have unlimited lives, but your score will drop. You can't select or redo levels (at all), which is an odd choice; But the game ranks you into one of five difficulties; play bad and you will drop.
* random - selects random levels in which you can set new highscores
* challenge - a set of 5 levels to play in a row with special conditions (time limit for example).

There are achievements which do nothing I think. Some look pretty challenging.

I think I will have much fun with the multiplayermode for up to 4 players which also has 3 modes:
* race - who can finish 5 levels the fastest
* rallye - score the most points in 5 levels
* conquest - like in singleplayer

Yeah, that's that. Some levels feel kind of cool, when you have to tilt so that you make smooth landings or "throw" your ball at the end of a halfpipe. Some are a bit boring. Has an elastomania-feel to it for those who know it :D

why not? Not like they can easily go for a faster update than Japan, considering many/most of the games will be coming from there in the first place.

once a month is pretty shit though - you'll end up forgetting about it

Weekly wouldn't mean faster, I think they'll just go for 1-2 games a week and update it together with the Wii Shop. Although I don't know which I'd prefer :/

Japan gets these next week:

VC:
-Der Langrisser (SFC)
-Mappy (VCA)

WiiWare:
-Out of Galaxy: Gin no Koshika (Another manga)
-Drill Sergeant Mindstrong
-Tsuppari Oozumou Wii

We really need more arcade games... and from a greater variety.

A semi-standard interface would be nice, too. The Tecmo one is fairly pathetic.

Is it safe to assume we'll bet getting Majora Monday? I can't see why we -wouldn't... haven't we GENERALLY gotten any N64 titles within a week of Europe/Japan, or has it always simply been in the same month?

Maybe Reggie doesn't think that Majora's Mask fits his idea of gaming perfection, forever scuppering a US release...

Another quick update to the OP with Capndrake's info and a few tweaks.

BTW, David - if all goes to plan this thread will die soon, but it will be replaced by one in the same format (albeit perhaps with a new title!) for May ;-)

I was recently reminded of the awesomeness that is Battle Clash (Super Scope SNES title). Any word on this getting released for VC? I very rarely buy VC games that I already have in cartridge form, but this one (and probably its sequel) would warrant a second purchase. Intelligent Systems goodness. :D

It makes me cry that we can never get a US VC release of that. Were the first two games in the series released on VC in Japan? (EDIT: And, yes, I know that Der Langrisser is a loose remake of Langrisser 2)

OK, here's a first pass at adding Somnid's list of titles with releases in other regions:

-------------------------------------------

There are many titles in the various catalogues that have only been released in one or two of the three major territories, despite having equivalent localised versions. This list is an attempt to highlight the discrepancies and list titles that are candidates for release.

I think that information is a "nice to know," but I don't know that it belongs in the OP. The fact that a game is released in some regions but not others doesn't necessarily mean that it'll be coming to the other region(s) anytime soon, I'd think. Also, the format of the OP is to be something that anyone can pick up from month-to-month, so we don't want to overload it. :)

Yeah, that's what I'm leaning toward. I think a link to it under either the links section or perhaps the announcements section would be the best idea.

I'm also inclined to have the ratings updates separately to keep the OP shorter and clearer, so perhaps I could have a separate post with ratings and this info that was linked into the OP?

Cyber Sled! Did any of you play this against a live human in the arcades? So good. I spent most of my lunch period, and money, on this and bust-a-move. Alan Striker knows what's up.

Can't even explain how excited I am for Majoras Mask... I've waited since it came out to play it, never found it for sale in Australia, so now's my chance. Once I finish Lost & Damned, it's on.

Nope. You want the May-August/ America & Europe but non-PAL/ DSiWare & VC but non-WiiWare/ recommendation but non-release or official thread. I think I saw it on page four an hour or two ago...

It was an honest mistake. Move along.... move along...

GAF needs more Nintendo DL threads like clickads need more Busted 'cowbell' shirt adverts.

Mm. Apparently one of the mods has made that decision.

I'd hope that we see what we get in the weekly MC threads - conversation that focuses on new releases and updates, but ranges widely and continues from thread to thread.

The various national ratings organisations will occasionally provide advance notice of new releases and individual companies may announce forthcoming releases. These updates will be listed here. As games are released in the corresponding regions, they will be removed from the lists.

Hmm not sure if I like this direction but I guess I have no choice.

Beat Ys 1 earlier and I'm starting to see how everyone refers to the bosses of Ys 2 as 2D shooter fights. Personally I think it's an improvement but I guess I'm just sore from that gargoyle jerk at the bottom of the Mines(took several retries to figure him out)

Played some more Secret of Mana. Thanks to the utterly broken magic system I wasted the giant(dude you face before you get the Gnome and his spells) so bad he couldn't even attack. Between damage stacking and hit stun the poor bastard couldn't do a thing.

For the VC/WiiWare/DSiWare initial section, how's this for a modified format? Specifically, is it easier to find what you're looking for in this format?

This is a work-in-progress, and any contributions or corrections for the OP would be most welcome.

Note: For released VC/WiiWare/DSiWare games, they are ordered by date with the most recent games at the top of each section.

it's definitely broken and glitchy, like much of this game. ultimately, though, i still feel it's a completely wonderful mess of a game. it's a fantastic candidate to be remade or rereleased, and not even with extensive changes; just tweak the little things that are goofy and wrong with it and put it on ds.

Oh I still love the game dearly. It'd be another thing entirely if the game was busted in a way that would put the player at a constant disadvantage but when I'm holding all the cards it's a very quaint piece of work.

Both this and SD3 would benefit from a remake but it'll probably never happen.

Problem:
When the month changes, the most recent releases at the end of a month might not get much time on the OP or have much time for discussion.

Solution:
Include the last week of VC/WiiWare/DSiWare releases from the previous month in the OP for the next month.

Example:
Include the releases from Apr 24-30 in their respective sections in the OP when starting the May "Nintendo Digital Downloads" thread.

That gives late month releases a chance to still be seen and discussed. How does that sound?

Yeah, that's what I'd be inclined to do. It also "seeds" the new thread and (hopefully) gets a bit of conversation going right away.

As for the revised OP, a lot of it looks good - I'll post something later incorporating your suggestions. I'd probably lean toward using bold instead of underlined, but the other changes all look to be for the better. Ultimately, what I want is for the OP to be a lightweight, easily replicated format for anyone to pick up and run with.

What about just calling the thread "Wii / DS Downloads: April 2009" or something? You could still use that banner. It doesn't have to match the thread title. :p

Well, the banner was a temp so it can be changed. I am tempted to keep it "Digital Downloads" and just an "approved by Chris Kohler" though ;-)

Hmm...

Last weekend we hyped the shit out of Majora's Mask being a shoe in for Monday's VC update. Instead we got an unbelievably awesome and obscure game.

MAJORA'S MASK IS AWESOME AND WILL COME OUT MONDAY!!! HYPE HYPE HYPE!

I wonder if we'll get Metal Storm instead!
