ha i would actually snap that up if i didn't have book 1 ( was aiming for book 2 - 7!), infact i'll probably end up getting a 1-7 package and then having a double as it'll still be cheaper!

In other news, have you guys seen the new trailer for DoW 3 that was released a few days ago?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0XnU0xaqsY

It's looking nice, like wayyy better than when they first showed it off. As always it's looking to have the staple of Relic's amazing character animations.

The animation for the hero units and large walkers seems pretty nice, but for the basic units everything just instantly snaps from one repetitive animation to the next, with it overall feeling quite static and lifeless - it reminds me of what you'd see in a MOBA or Mobile game in terms of unit animation. It's also very hard to tell at a glance what units are what (despite that being one of the reasons for the extremely cartoony and bright art style), and then you have things like what seems to be untextured Guardsmen.

I really enjoyed that mode in DoW 2 where you played one character and tried to survive wave after wave of enemy. In fact i dont think my 32-year old Real time management skills could handle coordinating a whole army any more!

Still, day one.

Scans of the next months White Dwarf have surfaced! They say that Guilliman is the first loyalist Primarch, but I'm not sure if that means that more are definitely coming or if it's just a wording goof.

If what it says is along the lines of "the first loyalist Primarch to return" then i don't think that necessarily hints at there being others coming back, it's just stating that this is the first time an event like this has happened in the setting, he's the first to return regardless of if there's more coming or not.

Holy moly!! Was this expected or rumoured?

Girlyman coming back was leaked last month-ish? Rumoured since late last year.

Of course. Just saying that the wording is ambiguous enough to mean either one of the possibilities.

What if he creates causes a huge chunk of humanity to break away from the current state and create a new age of strife?

I can see that. From the leaks it seems that he is unhappy about what is happening to the Imperium.

Which is why it's likely he won't stay around in the setting for long. Considering they've specifically mentioned his backpack has a life support device in it, i expect that'll break at some point and he'll go back into Stasis.

Hasn't he done this once before already, during the Heresy? Seems like it would be the most obvious route for him to go at this stage, and would also add a lot of drama into imperial forces and allow them some space to change things a bit.

Would be extra interesting as the smurfs are the most stereotypical, loyal space marines - how they each to their primarch setting up a new imperium without the god emperor would be an fascinating situation. Your primarch returns due to a miracle, and then immediately says your god is false and sets up a new empire...

I am neck deep in Age of Sigmar and can't afford at all to get into actual 40k, but holy crap they are doing work with the lore. This stuff is really great. Between AoS being an organic growing world before our eyes and 40K feeling like it is finally moving forward a tiny bit, what a time to be into this stuff!

There was also the Nova Terra Interegnum.

I seriously doubt they're going to keep him as part of the setting for long. He's going on about fixing the Imperium, there is no way that is happening as the Imperium being broken is pretty much their entire premise.

You keep saying that, but times are a'changin'! It's pretty obvious at this point that GW isn't simply dabbling a toe in the water. It's a new era and this is no longer your father's 40k.

No, that's just absurd. They aren't going to change the entire theme of W40K even if the plot is progressing somewhat. You have absolutely no reason to think they're going to do anything like fix the Imperium in any way.

What they have done so far is nowhere near the level of actually changing a core theme of the setting, a few well known things changing is in no way suggestive of the entire premise of the Imperium being thrown out

Of course there are mentions of him wanting to "save the Imperium", that doesn't mean anything regarding it actually happening. Guilliman is back, is clearly not too happy and obviously wants to fix things, what do you expect GW to say about that? They aren't exactly going to ignore that plot point and aren't going to say he's going to die/go back into stasis again before anything has even happened.

Exactly.

Him being back just makes more conflict. 40k is just going to get darker.

Didn't you just say you thought he was actually going to fix things, though? Maybe i got it wrong but i thought you were saying him sorting out the Imperium was something you thought would actually happen.

You got it wrong.

To clarify even further, the more Primarchs and eldar Phoenix Lords that show up, the worse things will get. They're only showing up at the End Times after all!

For what it's worth, the article says that the third book will not end up with a battle, but with a revelation.

It's all just been a dream of the emperor when he was a young boy. When he awakens he has to contemplate if he should allow his visions to come to pass or just kill himself on the spot, lol.

You really they're gonna pull the plug on 40k after how the fantasy Warhammer end times and Age of Sigmar panned out?

I thought they got a lot of blow back from the fans for doing that.

They could, but I don't think they will. Fantasy was hurting. AoS is doing well, to my understanding.

40k isn't selling poorly, so there is no need for a top to bottom reinvention. Advancing the story is simply stirring up the fanbase, bringing old players back, and creating opportunities to make and sell new books and miniatures.

I don't want GW to end the 40k story like they did with Warhammer. I do hope to see them take us further towards the finish with a return of the heroes and villains of old with fresh new takes on rules, scenerios, miniatures, and lore.

They've said at least twice now that this is not the End Times for 40k.
Is this the End Times for Warhammer 40,000?
"Ha, no!" says Andy. "Not even remotely. The return of Guilliman is a glorious event that marks the possible salvation of the Imperium. It is certainly a game-changer, both in the background and in the game itself, but this is definitely not the end of all things. The universe of Warhammer 40, 000 will still be there when the trumpets stop blaring and the dust of Guilliman's return settles, as will the Imperium, the Necrons, the Tau, Orks, Eldar and so on. And of course, the forces of Chaos."

All the talk of 40k end times was so ridiculous. 40k is GW's cash cow, it keeps the whole company afloat. They're not going to throw that under a bus on the off chance they might produce something more popular, especially after the lukewarm reception to AoS.

It doesn't seem big enough to be the "End Times" anyway, haven't there have been worse events than this for the Imperium?

As they keep only hinting at him being the "possible salvation of the Imperium" and keep wording it specifically to be a "possible" thing, that supports that it isn't going to happen and something will go wrong with him. They've also been going on about how Guilliman coming back is this huge event on its own as well, so i don't think they're likely to bring back any other Primarchs alongside him.

It's a big event but there's no way they're going to just suddenly have everything happen like all the Primarchs come back and there's a sort of "End-Times" event for all the races, though. It's a huge thing but things will still be roughly the same afterwards.

What do people even think of AoS now it's been out a while? I'm still completely against it because of what it did the the setting, but I've seen people say "The game is more popular than WHF, so changing the setting was needed!" and say it was the right move...but that seems to completely misinterpret the situation.

The new game is cheaper and easier to get into, of course it's going to attract more players than WHF did. That doesn't mean it was a good thing. That also assumes that part of the reason it's more popular is because of the lore changes rather than just the game itself being simpler. I doubt anyone was going to suddenly be interested because years of lore was thrown out.

I can't see any reason at all to defend what AoS did to the lore. The game being more successful (if it is) is not necessarily indicative of it being a needed change. There is no reason not to think if they had just released a WHF-based AoS game and kept supporting WHF it would be just as popular, if not more, and got people into the 'full' version of WHF later on as well.

They probably could've turned WFB around if they'd tried, but the CEO at the time was a complete buffoon and his decisions caused a lot of the problems in the first place.

At least it wasn't too late to salvage AoS after its poor launch, the General's Handbook was a great move and AoS has become a really fun game now with a healthy and growing audience.

GW's a much more customer-friendly company these days too, under the current leadership.

What sort of problems did the last guy cause for WHF? I was more into W40K so i'm not sure what the problem with it was.

Specialist games were scrapped which used to be a less expensive gateway into the bigger games like WFB, prices rose every summer to ridiculous levels which priced people out of WFB due to the sheer amount of minis required to play, they backed away from the internet with the closure of their forums and social media accounts which bred resentment among the community, he believed the games were second to the models so didn't put resources into tightening up the game rules (even basic FAQs were few and far between), rules like 'Horde' were added which were basically there to get you to buy more models, and they shied away from supporting the WFB tournament scene around the world.

Many veterans were feeling neglected or abused by GW, and sought out other miniatures companies and wargames. Newcomers dwindled due to the complex rules and extremely high cost of entry. WFB sales then fell of a cliff, to the point were they were either going to scrap their fantasy range entirely, or develop it into something else (AoS!).

I'm probably forgetting something :p

The rumour mill is saying that more Primarchs will surface and one from both sides will switch sides (but how is that even possible without TTS hijinks?). Supposedly Mortarion will pop up next, if the model leak is legit.

Hmmmm

Alpharius to the good guys? No idea who would go to the dark side though.

Alpharius is dead as a rock. Though Omegon is so far unaccounted for.
Personally I think Lorgar having a change of heart now that the Imperium is worshipping the Emperor like he preached in the Lectitio Divinitatus would be hilarious.

That sounds extremely unlikely to me. Have you got a link to the stuff about more coming back? I really don't see how any of the chaos primarchs could switch sides.
