Synopsis

Six teenagers living in the far-away land of Ninjago find themselves "hired" and trained by an old ninja master named Wu, to become ninjas who protect the capital city at night from monsters sent by Lord Garmadon, a warlord seeking to conquer Ninjago, while using a variety of vehicles and dragons to aid them. Meanwhile, Lloyd Garmadon, the group's Green Ninja and leader, begins asking his mother questions about his father, and soon finds himself struggling to accept the truth that Lord Garmadon is his father, as a new threat soon emerges to endanger Ninjago, Meowthra.

Reviews

Critic Consensus: Despite ample charm and a few solid gags, The Lego Ninjago Movie suggests this franchise's formula isn't clicking like it used to.

I'm sorry to report that the Lego movie enterprise has lapsed into intentional mediocrity.

While parents may miss the second-level smarts of its predecessors, kids should fall right into the fun.

The pieces are all there, but they never really snap into place.

Just three movies in, the Lord/Miller LEGO genre is showing signs of exhaustion.

Warner Bros. animation has finally made the uninspired Lego cartoon that so many people were expecting from The Lego Movie back in early 2014.

Every bit as irreverent, smart, and ridiculously entertaining as its predecessors, The LEGO Ninjago Movie works even if you have no idea what a 'Ninjago' is.

Often, "The Lego Ninjago Movie" feels like it's obeying the conventions of throwaway entertainment when it should be making more of an effort to comment on it.

Despite comically inspired vocal performances from Justin Theroux and Dave Franco as nutjob Lego versions of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, the action and jokes pile up with exhausting repetitiveness.

Seems mixed

I’m more miffed (relatively...) that the blurb in the op spoiled everything but the climax of the movie lol

Kinda expected. this one just wanted to cash in on the success of the first one and the second one (even though it was already being promoted before the Batman movie came out)

I don’t give a shit about the Ninjago brand, but this looked cute/fun. Shame it’s apparently run-of-the-mill, after The Lego Movie was so fresh.

I expected this to be more Lego movie than more attracting to kids movie only. Makes sense considering the property but it's still disappointing.

There's nothing said there that wasn't shown in the trailer.

All of the commercials I've seen look pretty bad. Greatly enjoyed The Lego Movie and Lego Batman was pretty good except the weird relationship angle.

I haven't seen a Lego Movie yet but this one didn't seem too bad from the commercials. But maybe I'm more interested cause I've seen the Ninjago series.

Problem with this film is that not as many people care about the ninjago brand.

Conceptually this one is just way less interesting than 'the Lego movie' or 'Batman with Lego'.

'Another Lego movie with a brand no one over 10 has heard of'

Problem with this film is that not as many people care about the ninjago brand.

To be completely honest, all of the original Lego stuff are just clear stand ins for more popular franchises. Like this is clearly TMNT, I think the problem really is more that the story had nothing interesting to draw anyone in.

My son loves Ninjago so we can are looking but forward to this. Different voices than the cartoon I believe? That is a bummer

I'm not familiar with the franchise, but was going through some reviews and that was one of the complaints. I mean, is anyone that wouldn't see this anyway going to be won over by Abbi Jacobson or Justin Theroux? Two actors who I love, but they don't sell movies. Seems kinda shitty to throw the original voice actors under the bus like that.

Wish more animated movies would go for actual voice actors and then the occasional "star."

Yeah, this wasn't going to be anything more than a soul-less commercial.

I mean they have Harry Potter, LotR or Marvel

They chose the brand with no nostalgia value that only a few kids know

Should've been BIONICLE.

Oh yeah, that would've been far better ):

Why are they releasing ANOTHER Lego Movie just half a year after the last one?

Are they trying to exhaust the brand's charm as quickly as possible? Christ, let it breathe.

Warner's new CEO is trying to shift the company to focus mostly on a few brands, and Lego is one of them.

Lego Scooby is next isn't it? As long as they all feel like different movies I don't mind seeing this style bi-annually over the bland cookie cutter style most Dreamworks and Illumination animations have become.

You do realize that "bland and cookie cutter" is exactly what the Lego movies will be very shortly?

Kids do though. Lego's own brands like Ninjago and Nexo Knights are super popular and selling a lot of toys, probably even more than Bionicle did back in the day.

Ninjago is nothing like TMNT... Not even close.

I thought the Batman one was already stretching the formula thin; it's disappointing to see this go even further.

Just three movies in, the Lord/Miller LEGO genre is showing signs of exhaustion.

Whilst they founded it, this line seems a bit cheap - Lord and Miller had only hands off producer credits for this? Invoking their association is a bit misleading

Yeah. These Lego movies are exhausting to watch after a half hour for me. Just breakneck rapid fire jokes and references no matter if some fall flat here's some more jokes.

I'll check this out whenever it hits Netflix for the voice actors though. I like the cast
