Does anyone know the correct process for formatting a 3DS to be re-sold?

What happens to my Nintendo ID if I simply use the format option buried in the settings? Does it unlink the ID from the system? Will this in any way affect my Nintendo ID which is also linked to my switch?

Formatting unlinks the 3DS from the NNID. You can also call Nintendo to verify and remove it as well. Not it won't since the NNID is an account you can access anywhere, and it's not going to be deleted because you formatted your 3DS.
