HTC Vive is $599.

This chicken and egg thing with hardware and software keeps me on the fence.

Devs want an install base so they can at least recoup some money. I want a large library of solid titles before I jump in, but the install base needs to be there first for that to happen.

I've kind of followed the Giant Bomb sentiment on VR in general, where everyone was pumped to the max for Vive and Oculus to launch, and then when the software never really came around (yes, there's good stuff, EVE, RE7, but not enough) I sort of cooled on it.

I thought i'd be in near launch, even at launch prices, if the software was solid, and now I feel like I might never get one? Idk. I really hope that I see more of the big AAA franchises I love end up getting VR support (if it makes sense) because every time they do those VRodeo bits on GB, I don't see a single thing that looks like it would entertain for more than 30 minutes.

I want to get into VR so much, but I'm not sure it's worth it. I can't remember the last big VR game that was released. Seems like the software market for it is pretty lackluster. :|

I got a free GearVR, which sold me on VR, but the software just isn't there to make this worth it. Even at $600.

Will wait for the 2025 version when VR is fully developed

I know what you mean, but there's no such thing as "fully developed", it may be on a stage that completely satisfies your wishes for a VR device, but look at the history, every device created by man keeps evolving or was replaced by another technology at some point.

(this is meant for the people talking about there not being software)

I know it's a Vive thread, and technically you'd have use Revive to play some of the Oculus exclusives, but there are some great VR games out there.

And lots more, I'm not trying to be a VR shill or anything, but consumer hardware literally came out last year, it takes time to develop AAA games, but I think they're doing really well so far. There are plenty more of fun games I didn't list here.

Until they figure out a good way around locomotion I think VR will be stuck in endless prototype mode

After getting a Rift + controllers for only $300 that price is way too high.
Well, to be fair I had to get 3rd camera for 360 and had to deal with the USB port annoyances, so it's about $400 between the camera, extra extension cables, etc...

That said, it's still better then $600.

In Canada it was $1150, now down to $800. That's about 5% more of a drop than in the US, although converting the US price to CAD, it seems that they are still charging Canadians ~$50 CAD more than Americans.... *sigh*

Vive is superior to rift though.

People who are waiting/sitting on the fence - man up an dive in! The technology wont advance if not supported, and there are so many great VR experiences available right now.

Also porn!

it's weird that I've played awesome full length VR games that could never be as effective on a traditional display

I could see myself biting if we had even the faintest inkling of the timelines for VR hardware. Knowing that, for example, the next substantial release is expected in 2019 would make this a much easier sell. $400 is a lot to drop for technology that may be obsolete next year, nevermind $600.
