I wish they'd come up with a Kiwami 2 (or whatever they call it) soon because I don't want to go back to ps2 and now I want to play them all ;(

As I've mentioned before, if we are getting a new Yakuza announcement this year its most likely going to be around September when the Tokyo Game Show happens, that is the normal time when Sega show off a new Yakuza game. I'd also point out that from what Sega have indicated, it certainly sounds like they may well be working on a new game in the series over a remake of 2 (though I don't completely trust those comments). I just wouldn't get your hopes up for a remake this year (or next year for that matter).

Yeah I guess that even if it was announced today we wouldn't get it here before a very long time. It'll be hard to resist and not buy Yakuza 6 in the meantime. Maybe I'll just go straight to 3.

The games are getting released faster. Yakuza 6's English announcement was a couple of days before the game was released in Japan, so that's a step forward! If we get an announcement this year (in Japan) then its likely that an English announcement would be at this years PSX. So fingers crossed...

Can someone explain what prompts Majima to adopt the "Mad Dog" persona? I rewatched the ending with Sagawa but it still doesn't make much sense to me.

Play through Yakuza: Kiwami and it'll be become clear as day.

Yakuza 0 is probably Majima at his "sanest".

Well, 0 is a parallel world spin-off. Majima's new personality didn't surprise Saejima at all when Saejima found Majima in 4 ;p

Majima hated himself because he acted exactly as Shimano had thought how Majima would do. Majima helped Makoto and felt for her instead of killing her.

What was the general opinion of Kiwami when it released in Japan? Did it come out before 0 there?

No, after as it uses tons of stuff that was made for 0 - like the fighting styles (even though Majima isn't playable in Kiwami he still has all of his), mini games, basically all of the main assets/textures for the city (but some bits have been touched up/changed to reflect the changes between Tokyo '88 and Tokyo '05...

I seem to recall the reception being generally really positive - it did exactly what it set out to do - remake the original Yakuza game using a better engine so the combat is way better, it has way more content and it technically looks/runs better than the PS2 original (as you'd expect). Only main complaint I really recall is the Majima Anywhere system gets really bloody annoying after a while. Majima appearing from anywhere and getting progressively harder, at least you always knew where Shakedown was, plus you really do have to continue to fight Majima if you want the Dragon of Dojima fighting style to be of any use (as its hilariously useless when you begin chapter... 3 I think? Or it could be chapter 2).
Its still fun to fight Majima and there are some genuinely hilarious moments there, but I could have done without so much grinding (though I guess they had to gate off the DoD style somehow as its bloody powerful when you do have it upgraded, guess they should have compromised with less grinding but making the style less powerful to compensate).

Also, this might annoy some people (it sort of does for me) but the remixed soundtrack isn't as good in places as the PS2 version. Some fights don't sound as great as they did originally (Shimano in my opinion).

But I'd still rank it as my second favourite remake ever, I had so much fun replaying Yakuza 1 yet again this time with camera and lock on systems that weren't busted, side stories that couldn't be missed (I HATED this in the original games!), far more mini games to play and 60FPS combat.

getting back into Yakuza 5 and it's finally fun again. i've been skipping the side missions and doing the main quest. past the hunting part. i just skipped everything and in the city trying to get into a casino after beating a guy at 9-ball =)

Really like the property management stuff in 0, did they add anything like it in Kiwami?

I hated it enough to turn me off from the game for two months before coming back to it earlier this month to finish it. Luckily it wasn't as intrusive as I thought it would be. My biggest fear with adding what is essentially a mobile mini game was having to micro manage it and having it take focus away from the main plot point etc. Luckily, this was not the case and I never touched it shortly after it was introduced.

hey i have a question for Yakuza 5 players,

how do i get the High-Grade Cigarettes to work in the game to recover health? i equipped it and standing still but no health regenerates. i tried it in battle mode but i'm not sure if it's working.

I don't remember that item. Your character starts smoking when standing still? How about press down in battle?

I don't remember the item either, doesn't really sound that useful to be honest, especially with health drinks being in abundance in the game I'd just take the lazy way out and use those!

I finished Yakuza 5.

Overall the story doesn't make any bloody sense and it feels like it was built just for the purpose of include swerve after swerve for the sake of it.

But the ending was beautiful. I'm excited for 0 and 6.

btw, does the protagonists from 5 have any kind of role on 6?

I finally fucking finished Yakuza fucking 1, bitch.

Yakuza 0 really put in work to make me feel really awful and depressed about the whole Nishiki and Kiryu situation.
I wanted to go back to the days when they were bros singing karaoke and dancing. ;( I doubt I would have cared as much if I hadn't played 0 because they don't elaborate on their relationship at all. Pity that Nishiki died as a shitbag. He was one of my favorite characters in 0. I thought he would redeem himself a bit by killing Jingu, but then he just blows the place up out of spite.

As for Majima, I had a difficult time getting used him. He is completely different. It was odd seeing this unhinged Majima when I spent 99% of the time in 0 seeing him as a pretty calm guy.

I look forward to playing Kiwami to see all the changes that are made. Especially, Majima's increased role since he was barely in 1. For now, on to Yakuza 2.

here's the item in question: it goes in one of the accessories slot for Saejima:

Kiwami does a great job fleshing out Nishiki's character. Its a nice enough bridge between his 0 personality and the guy he becomes in 1.

Yeah, the story does suffer from being fractured due to its sheer size. It made sense the second time through that I played it, but damn did they go for a convuluted plot! Loved the final boss battle though gameplay wise, between that and the ending I pretty much forgave any shortcomings the game had as it was a great way of finishing the game.

As for 5's protagonists... answer below spoiled (not huge story spoilers for 6, but they are still spoilers none the less).

Kiryu - the one playable character in the plot.
Haruka - Has a super important role in 6's story. The story is really hers and Kiryus.
Seijima - The guy is in jail. Again.
Akiyama - Recurring character that helps Kiryu out several times in the plot of 6. Still badass.
Shinada - Nope, doesn't appear at all :(

0's opening is something very special if you know their future I almost cried when Nishiki appeared on the screen swinging his car key chain. Going to drink & ramen is a very typical thing Japanese men do. That segment is too good. (´;ω;`)

As for Majima, his role isn't increased in the main game of Kiwami. He just got a role like Mr. Shkedown in 0 with a jester like personality. It is completely different from Majima's personality in the main story and it ruined the game to a certain degree.

I tried it myself and it didn't work for me either. I guess it's just a meaningless description.

Kind of a random question, but recently I got interested in Sony's Hot Shots series and was planning on getting the Vita game, this was right at the time I was playing Yakuza 3 and... I noticed Kazuma is a DLC character in the japanese version, apparently?

I think I know the answer, but is there any way I can get him without having to go for the japanese version of the game? It'd be depressing to get into the series with the game that has one of my favorite characters in gaming and not be able go access him.

Isn't it just a movie part of the very beginning of the game?

I could swear it was actually raining in that first part - Shinji had an umbrella and when you fought the loan shark in Theatre Square it was raining (or just stopped, I remember rain soaked streets of Kamuracho). I might be slightly mis remembering that bit though.

Huzzah, my memory doesn't suck! To be fair it rains so infrequently in the series that I somehow remember it... I remember it raining briefly in 2 and 4 in the beginning. Pity that 6 didn't have any rain (that I remember), Kamuracho would have looked beautiful in the rain with the new engine.

Yeah, you can say that.

If I remember correctly, 4 is the only game you can choose the weather in the premium adventure. All the entries should have that option.

I loved the rain at the beginning of Yakuza 4. Going into the convenience stores and seeing the rain drops on the windows... it was very atmospheric. Maybe its asking too much, but a dynamic weather system ala Shenmue in a future Yakuza game would be ace (maybe they are saving that for the PS5 iterations!)

I must have missed that option completely, I certainly don't recall ever seeing it in other sequels. Pity, as that is a nice option to have.

Yakuza 2 is a huge step up from 1. Wow. The cutscenes are engrossing and the combat feels so much better.

Laughed my ass off when I encountered the side mission
with the yakuza boss into infantilism. I was not expecting that at all. Kiryu being stoic throughout the whole scene of big yakuza dudes rolling on the floor in diapers made it funnier.

That substory was the moment I knew that game (and the series) was something special.

Yakuza 1's combat is decent, but it becomes incredibly difficult to go back to it once you've played through the "improved" versions in future games.

It was a bit of a struggle going from 0 to 1. The camera in 1 is awful and made the combat frustrating since I had to line up Kiryu with an enemy perfectly to hit anyone. The boss fight with the Dante looking guy was hellish especially since I didn't have a bulletproof vest.

Yep, that was my epiphany too. So many substory characters build up over the series.

Yeah, the upgrades in Yakuza 2 are excellent, it makes it much more replayable compared to the original Yakuza (which as was pointed out has awful camera and lock on issues, just try fighting Komaki in the arena for true hell!) Plus Yakuza 2 adds so much to the combat in terms of heat moves (there are tons more compared to the sparce offerings from Yakuza 1).

For people in Region 3, there is a standard edition Yakuza Kiwami releasing.

Impulse Gaming in Malaysia where I usually order from will be getting both the standard edition R3 and steelbook R1.

Prices are

Standard Edition (RM99) (about US$23)

Steelbook Edition (RM149) (about US$35)

Man I was fine just getting the Steelbook before, but another $10 off, I can't say no to the standard edition. The Steelbook edition is awesome, but I doubt ill ever sell it anyway and I just want the game, so I think ill just get the standard. That's a totally unreal price for a total remake of a game.

Just preordered the standard edition for US$23...best bargain of the year and Yakuza 1 is a great story and I can't wait to experience it again.
