Suspect in custody for Louisiana murders cops say were "likely racially motivated"

Police believe the slayings of two black men in Baton Rouge were likely racially motivated and said Sunday they have a suspect — a 23-year-old white man — in custody.

The suspect, Kenneth Gleason, was being held on drug charges. Authorities did not yet have enough evidence to charge him with murder, Baton Rouge Sgt. L'Jean McKneely told The Associated Press.

McKneely said shell casings from the shootings linked the two slayings, and a car belonging to Gleason fit the description of the vehicle police were looking for. He said authorities had collected other circumstantial evidence but he wouldn't say what it was.

"There is a strong possibility that it could be racially motivated," he said.

He also said in both shootings the suspect fired from his car, then walked up to the victims as they were lying on the ground and fired again multiple times. He added that police haven't found any relationship between the suspect in the killings and the victims.

The shootings happened about five miles from each other. The first occurred Tuesday night when 59-year-old Bruce Cofield, who was homeless, was shot to death. The second happened Thursday night when 49-year-old Donald Smart was gunned down while walking to work at a cafe popular with Louisiana State University students, Mckneely said.

He didnt "just" pick these men off from his vehicle, he exited his car and fired more bullets into their fallen bodies to make sure they didnt survive the initial volley.
A real brave warrior here, emptying a dozen rounds into an old homeless man who wasnt bothering anyone and hadnt hurt a fly.

This story reminds me of the racist Maryland "swordsman" from earlier in the year who bussed himself up to New York, then impaled a senior citizen from behind.

I hate how proper English/punctuation is thrown out the window when headline titles are made. It took me like 3 tries on the thread title then I clicked the article and it's just as bad.

I guess it's made worse by the fact that "murders" can be either a noun or verb. Suspect murders cops?

I think there's a very thin line between the people who defend cops executing unarmed Black people on camera and the type of person who does this. The dehumanisation is already set in their mind, the only ingredient missing is the willingness to personally act on their murderous fantasies.

In that exchange of bullets, its important to rember there's good and bad on both sides. Many sides. He shot, yes, but they probably made a lot of noise when they were shot.

Interesting that an instigating Nazi piece of shit being tracked down and punched in his face generates so much more alarmist discussion than a Nazi tracking down and summarily executing two defenseless old men.
White supremacist terrorism is just business as usual, but White supremacists experiencing some vigilante justice isnt the proper order of things.

You said it yourself, a white person killing black people specifically because they are black is not at all alarming to most Americans. A white person being assaulted for harassing black people, yelling at people in the street, trying to instigate violence, believing in others genetic inferiority, and aligning himself with an ideology of mass genocide...that's unforgivable and a threat to the status quo they silently enjoy.

As someone who does not support vigilante violence this is a very good point. Cases like this are infinitely more outrageous and deserving of public attention and condemnation.

The article is kinda confusing, he was arrested recently for stealing the book "hitchickers guide to the galaxy" and that is what that bond is for. This is before being charged with the murders. The bond won't be 500 for those.

Racism will unfortunately continue to be passed down. Especially since our current president has made them feel as though dog whistles are no longer needed and popular YouTubers who have big child audiences put Nazi imagery and use slurs in their videos. Then there are the "both sides" and "meet in the middle" people.
