Halo 5 November Update Includes Local Server Support (LAN Play via Local PC Server)

From the current 343 stream.

Was just announced this evening that Halo 5 will be getting local server support with the fall update; you'll run a server on your PC and connect to it via your XB1 consoles. Waiting on the FAQ to confirm everything but from what I understand it still needs a connection to the internet to authorise but all gameplay is run through the local server and is not Xbox Live dependant after that initial connection.

343 also reiterated the team's dedication to LAN support for future games in the stream, but it's great that Halo 5 wasn't completely left behind.

We also heard that Skybox labs is working on the 4k X update, no more specific details beyond that though. Oddball is also getting official support.

Why the lack of 4k update details? Is that thing coming in hot?

There was some talk before the stream about not being equipped to stream out 4k footage from their setup. Perhaps that's why they held off?

Maybe we're just going to get another X media blowout before launch and get footage then. I think we're still waiting on Gears 4 and a couple other for direct feed material.

Just talking about the details would have sufficed. A list of enhancements works for a lot of the other games making patches, why not this one?

Go Go Neo Rangers!
It's weird for them to put this in so late. Leads me to believe 6 will be an extension of 5 and not be built from the ground up.

Official details.

LOCAL SERVER APP
Another awesome new addition to your multiplayer experience is the Halo 5: Guardians Local Server app, which provides another new way to create, host and play custom multiplayer games in Halo 5 on Xbox One on a local network via a super easy-to-use app. With this new app, players can host a local server on a Windows 10 PC connected to the same network as Xbox One consoles to enjoy easy, low-latency Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer matches – perfect for LAN parties, events, or running your own tournament.

The Local Server app provides a method for tournament organizers to set up their own events in a scenario that mirrors the environment used for professional matches. With these new options, you can create a local server similar to those used for the Halo Championship Series events, providing an ideal proving ground for everything from professional and amateur competitive teams to friendly tournaments.

All Halo 5 players can use the Local Server app to create their own custom games, including custom game types and community maps created using Forge mode – and all you need is an Xbox Live Silver account. An internet connection for host PC and consoles is required for Xbox Live sign-in and Post-Game Carnage Reports but all gameplay traffic is transmitted over the local network, significantly reducing internet bandwidth requirements, and letting you concentrate on the action.

We’re incredibly excited to see what players and communities do with this new functionality, and hope everyone enjoys!

What? Does PC have ranked or something now? I thought all it had was a server browser.
I think they want to wait till 6 before doing this. Probably don’t want to send it out to die on the windows store like some other games did, nor give it away for free while they are selling it to Xbox users.

It will do a lot better if they can launch the series back to pc as a full $60 game with all the marketing hype halo 6 will have

What a silly implementation of a feature that should've been there day one.

Silly implementation?

This is objectively the best way to implement it.

All the benefits of LAN support without the negatives associated with a player acting as host (host advantage, Less CPU available to running the game due to hosting requirements)

Local Server would have been in at launch, but in either case, it's an improvement over typical LAN support.

"Still needs Internet connection" is the silly part. Should just let these boxes wire up to each other like LAN has always worked for Xbox.

It needs an internet connection for authorization- A security measure. How else would your Xbox know if you are connecting to a legit LAN server or something nefarious. After authorization, you can disconnect and it will still work.

Just connecting Xbox's and letting it fly isnt an option. The game was designed around dedicated servers- as such the Xbox hardware is maxed out- leaving no CPU for one of them to act as host.

That's why an additional machine is needed

It's not silly, it's literally the only way to do this. Halo 5 is built around dedicated servers and it's not possible to let Xboxes connect to each other directly like Halo 1/2/3/4/Reach, it's a completely different networking model and different game setup.

People wanted 343 to go all in on dedis for Halo. They actually legtimately went all in on dedis.

You'd think they would have done this a long time ago rather than dragging dev kits and staff to events.
Especially for a game with such a focus on e-sports.

Still welcome, seems like 343 are trying to sort some of their shit out... And they need to if halo 6 is as far off as Bonnie suggested.

It really would have been a nice feature at launch. Halo 5 would have been able to build local communities like back in the old days.

But given the state of the game at launch, I can understand why this feature would not have been a top priority.

Also, There are probably other backend ducks that needed to be aligned in order for this to be feasible.

All in all, this bodes well for the future of the franchise. Halo 6 can still go all in on dedicated servers & will have split. And if they dream of expanding local server to support online mp, it would be revolutionary for the Halo social community.

About time, even if it ain‘t „real“ LAN (make sure to exclude that Win10 server-pc for H6, 343).
No good reason why LAN wasn‘t supported from the start. Spent too much time sitting in the same room with friends without being able to play because of XBL/ISP problems.

Having a local dedicated server is better than having a game designed with p2p architecture. So I hope to heaven they don't exclude it for H6.

You could easily bypass xboxlive subscription if there wasn't any authentification. You could tunnel the server over the internet with hamachi or the like (just like good ol xboxconnect and xlinkkai)

I wonder if all these MCC and H5 updates are them testing the stuff for H6...

I still haven't played H5 lol but might when the X drops

But it is real LAN. All game traffic stays in the network.

MCC now includes Halo 5! All updated to 4K for Xbox X and releasing on PC as a play anywhere game.

Surely that is coming soon?

Lots of a dreamers in this thread. Halo 6 is coming to PC, no way 5 makes it.

Yet Halo 6 is still a no show, with 343 saying they won't be talking about it for quite a while. It would make sense to grow the Halo PC player base in the gap that presents.

The stats API being included is a great addition, too. Tournaments are gonna be real easy to setup for T.Os now.
