Any word on stealth updates?
Plenty if you read the Firmware release thread. :p

Seriously though,
- New music visualiser
- Animated video thumbnails now work in albums
- Blue internet browser background is now same colour as XMB background
- A couple people have said that the internet browser is quicker and more responsive

[Disclaimer: Haven't installed it myself yet, so I'm going on what other people have said]

Judging from that, the only obvious thing that leaps out is the fact that the non working one has a custom matrix.

This is what jumps out at me as being different from the other 2. So XviDs encoded with a custom matrix might be the ones that won't play.

Edit: Bah. Didn't even see the above poster's comments before I posted :-/ Sorry! Been a sleepless night.

So the avi's i made using GordonKnot don't work...are they Xvids then? I want them to work :(
Yeah, they're most likely encoded using XviD. And yeah, unfortunately GordianKnot uses custom matrixes to do the encoding (gives a better encode, but less compatible)

Hopefully Sony will fix this as it's annoying.

So it appears that as long as you have "Default" in that Matrix section the .avi should play OK.

thanks I'll check it out. Media player is just terrible. I mean 75% of the stuff it that showed up on my ps3 where deleted a long time ago. And the few movies that work stop streaming about 10 seconds in.

What settings should I use in Handbrake for encoding DVDs and TV episodes? Going to rip the first episode of lost over and try that... but want to get a good encode but not end up with a huge file.

I think there's an option to "disable show deleted media". Or something
But it works fine for me, I was surprised that the shares came up.

woulda been cooler if something were actually happening on the earth that reacted to the music you were playing like normal visualizations

Hope this update includes some backward compatibility fixes. I needs my Fire Pro!

Don't know about Fire Pro, but BC was updated in this release. Silent Hill 2 Director's Cut finally works (with the occasional graphical glitch). And my most anticipated update, 7 Blades now runs instead of saying it's not supported.

So yeah, I was relieved to find that the updates are still happening in spite of the 40GB (at least for the moment). Now apart from the odd glitch and Soul Calibur 3 still looking like it's running at a choppy framerate everything I care about is supported.

:D

don't use xvid if you are ripping dvds, there should be plenty of software to rip it to mp4

Hm?

Gspot said that the file is fine. Yet the PS3 is only playing 11 seconds of the Naruto episode. And only 6 seconds of the Bleach on :S

Edit: When I stream it from Tversity it works fine, but when I put it on the flash drive it says only 11 seconds for 171mb file...wtf.

Maybe the audio or video is VBR and the PS3 is freaking out trying to work length out from the bitrate, whereas TVersity does it first and tells the PS3?

Doesn't look like it. Maybe you pulled your flash drive out too early when transferring the files? Try playing the files from your PC, directly from the flash drive and check they're complete.

Naruto and Bleach. Those xvids are touchy. My Divx Certified dvd player from Phillips wouldn't play 1 in 10 Naruto eps, and the Bleach ones just plain refused to play. They're encoded... differently. The 360 plays them, but sometimes has jitters at the start of the playback for about 5 seconds.

Yup I played them on my PC from the flash drive and they worked fine. What I noticed though is that Dattebayo(DB) uses windows movie maker 2.1 while other groups use VirtualDub. That's the only difference I can see.

Because One Piece worked flawlessly. *tears*

Your MediaInfo output says that the .avi was output via Windows Movie Maker. I was not aware that Windows Movie Maker can output AVI. I thought it was just WMV only. Maybe you should try remuxing the streams together.

This also might work for anyone else that is having problems with files that only play back a few seconds.

Download AVI-Mux GUI: http://www.alexander-noe.com/video/amg/

Drag and drop the .avi file into the area at the top of the AVI-Mux window then click on the "generate data source from files" button:

739v9jl.jpg

This will analyze the file and you'll be able to see what's inside of it. You can then click on the "start" button and save out the AVI. It'll pull the data from the original one and then write it out in a properly structured .avi file. It does no reencoding of the data so it's quick.

6x92v51.jpg

Incidentally, you can also use AVI-Mux GUI to join together AVIs. You just drag and drop them into the window at the top then use CONTROL CLICK to select the ones you want to join and press the "generate data source from files" button and then save it out. This is useful to join those movies that are split to 700 meg pieces and they have 2 pieces to fit on CDs. Just join them together into one big 1.4 gig file.

So what are you supposed to do with xvids that aren't working? Do they need to be run through something like VirtualDub?

RAD Video Tools might also fix them. I always used it when making videos for my PS2.

Yeah, It turns out that it should have played fine but it has a custom matrix which the PS3 Divx implementation doesn't support. Basically and Divx/Xvid with Custom Matrix, Qpel, Gmc enabled will need to be run through a encoder to remove it before it will play. Luckily it's the only video other than a few pr0n clips that have refused to play so far. :D

For XviDs with Custom Matrixes, you'd have to reencode them.

For DivX/XviDs with packed bitstreams you'd have to unpack them. A tool for that has already been mentioned in the thread I believe (or was it the other firmware thread? I forget...). Avidemux also can unpack bitstreams.

Huh. Well, I guess I should have tested that. I was just repeating what someone else had said. I'll have to try it out.

I've tested the Custom matrix thing myself though. None that I have play if they have Custom Matrixes.

It's the way the subbers (DB, I presume?) encode the Naruto/bleach Eps. Had the same issue on my Zen player.

Sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead but can someone PM the settings required so that PS3 can output audio from both HDMI and Optical out?

I'm sure someone was talking about that in the previous pages.
