Have the quality of the rigs improved? Like can I get the same extreme expression like in the short?

I'll have to see myself. I know overwatch stuff is all over sfm, but I figured they were limited when ported over.

Make sure you turn on incognito mode.

Search "overwatch SFM extreme" on tumblr to find out.

Seriously are there any good animators working on Overwatch fan films who aren't just making porn? :| Some have a good sense of humor:

but that community is so much smaller than back in the day when people were making really cool shit with Team Fortress assets.

There's more money in boobs. Last I had read some of the Patreons for SFMPorn were insane and a lot of those aren't really making "movies" but just short animated clips. Its crazy.

Yo, where is this from? That looks awesome!

The Mei clip was really boring. At least the Junkrat one had some energy and humor.

Well in fairness, we had two different kinds of shorts this week (which for that in itself is shocking, to say the least since it would either be an animated short or an online comic).

One short was comedic while the other was tragic. One played to Junkrat's chaotic nature and random nonsense while the other played more to Mei's personality and uncertainty of what happened when she woke up from her 9-year cryo sleep.

Mind you if anything else, we need more humor shorts like Junkrat's, but it seems like he would be the only person who can get away with doing that since other characters are either too serious or they get their humor by F***ing with other characters (like Sombra). Perhaps if anything, a Lucio short would be interesting to follow.

Valve hasn't released an animated short in over three years, and I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say they'll never release another one or write any new character-centric content ever again.

TF2 developer Dave Riller confirmed back in February that the next big TF2 update (which is going to be Pyro and Jungle focused and will likely be out soon) will have a 4-5 minute animated movie similar to the Meet Your Team videos.

Valve also still has to finish the last issue of the 7 part TF2 comic series although the Valve comic artists constantly get pulled away to work on other projects so it's hard to say how long it will be until the last issue is finished. I doubt that will be the last comic, you never know when Valve will ship a comic with an update.

They try to pull these cheap emotional strings and fail so bad... the moment she discovered all her friend were dead was hilarious.

The bastion one is the only good one.

You're right, there's no way the TF2 shorts could ever be this good.

Thats just a small sample of quotable stuff i still see to this day among TF2 players old and new. And thats from the shorts, not even mentioning the comics or in-game stuff.

OW tries to make its characters fun too with the unique voicelines in-game but the outside media never reflects that.

TF2 has some great in-game one-liners. Scout has some of my favorites.

"If you order now, I'll throw in a second beatin', absolutely free."
"You'll never hit me! You'll never hit my tiny head!"
"Hehey, look, you shapeshifted into a dead guy!"
"I gotta bucket of chicken and I'm here to kick ass! And I'm all outta chicken...so I lied about the chicken."
"I'm so fast I got my feet bronzed! And now I'm not as fast."

The "emotional" Overwatch shorts are funnier than the "funny" ones.

Makes Starcraft II look well-written.

The only good thing that came from this short, imo, is the answer to why Mei looks so young. I was wondering what Mercy was saying when she was suspicious about mei looking so young. I thought it was something more sinister on Mei's part.

TBH it's just nice having my hispanic-ass last name (Torres from Spain who is real frozen and dead) in marketing for a video game that features a Japanese non-sexualized woman and a fucking moon gorilla.

I know this doesn't seem like much, but Overwatch really makes me feel... represented in a way most games do not.

And I appreciate it.

Also - god is she adorable. These characters man.

They don't just nail "diversity," they feel genuinely different and likable from so many different angles. I mean, think about it, we all loved "The Plan" and that's about two sociopathic killers/robbers - one of whom at least is super into robot genocide politically.

Love it. Love Blizz. Love you all.
Mei is Chinese.

The story shown in this short was mostly already known.

That is one thing with the shorts. Very few of them actually feature story movement or they don't actually show the interesting parts.

The Doomfist one was cool, but ultimately it's just a clip of him apparently deciding he was done with being in jail and punching his way out. Like, what? That was all it took?

This one revolved around Me trying to get a signal out, but instead she just gets Winston's message and then, apparently, just walks out of Antarctica. Like was she actually imperilled?

Aside from successfully assassinating Mondata, Talon just kind of Team Rockets their way through the missions we've seen.

Don't suppose there's a group or something on Neogaf that could teach people how to use the SFM is there? Would be nice to figure out how to do animations like this.
There are a lot of tutorial videos up, like with all 3D animation programs it's more down to learning the toolset and actually knowing about the core basics of animation and the process of making an animation like thumbnails---->storyboards->animatic->layout->blocking, using reference, etc. A lot of SFM filmmakers just pose the model don't bother to learn the principles of animation but good lord the ones who do were really good.

The king is dead. The Junkrat short puts OW on top simply by existing and being good. The Mei short is kinda eh but at least they're putting some appealing personality into the sparse story that seems to follow team based shooters in the modern era.
It's heartbreaking how amazing these shorts from Valve were and yet they seem to put barely resources into them. I guess it's not unlike Valves game output.

Overwatch continues to be cool with these animated shorts, and Mei was one of my favorite characters to use, but...

[The short] was cute but I think they could've had less talking to herself about everything that was going on.

Yeah... I agree.

Cute short but yeah, it's obvious how Blizzard just hasn't fostered a writing/directing team that's on par with their SFX. There's a reason for why the TF2 shorts are brought up in comparison, they're really good (albeit comedic but I don't think it's easy to write good comedy).

Blizzard seems to be trying though, so hopefully they can improve now that they're branching out from Warcraft.

I don't think it's necessarily just the writing in this one. The pacing just seems all over the place. There's nothing wrong with finding out everyone is dead and then being sad about it and then getting over it, but Rise And Shine didn't even dedicate a full minute to that. And then it happens again, and that just draws attention to the breakneck speed the story is moving at.

As for comedy, yes. It is very difficult, and you'd be hard pressed to find a better example of that than video games, where so much of the comedy is just Whedonesque quips because nobody in video games knows how to properly construct a joke. Video games are a visual medium! Don't just put all your comedy in a format where it loses nothing when adapted into an audiobook! It's very telling that disproportionately few video games are comedies. I can't complain too much though, at least West of Loathing released recently.

I rewatched it and liked it a bit more but I really do have to agree that it felt rushed in spots. Maybe if it was a minute longer with her grieving a bit more and figuring things out then it would've been better. Def one of the weakest for me in terms of pacing and direction.

The two best are still Dragons and Last Bastion. The combination of visual storytelling and directing in those were perfect.

It would help if they actually continued to add to and update the public Source Filmmaker. There's apparently a whole new version, but it's not compatible with all the old assets, and while it has some new features, it's also missing a bunch of them. To my understanding, it's good for DOTA 2, and that's about it.

It's the Blizzard style. Very well done visuals and character design, but the plot and dialogue are all ripped directly from action movie cliches, mediocre comics, and Lovecraft's lesser works. Throw in the obligatory Shitty Metzen Twist (which inexplicably pervades after he left) and you've got yourself literally any Blizzard cinematic from the last two decades or so.

In terms of sheer badness, Blizzard's writing probably isn't the worst that gaming has to offer. It's probably not even the second-worst. But it is the most soulless.

I love these Overwatch clips. I just adore the characters, wish they were apart to a different kind of game. Not much of a multiplayer/FPS guy.
