I do think it definitely is a production choice. They have a lot of music inbetween the matches, so maybe whoever was designing the thing wanted to emphasize it more.
But who knows, I'm not sure what people with money do lol
The thing is that removing the BGM doesn't make the commentary clearer or anything. It just feels like there's a missing element during matches.
If you're gonna do something like that, how about making the characters speak English. We're all Arc System Works here for some reason.
