NieR: Automata |OT| "I wouldn't expect too much from this game if I were you."

I really dislike
playing as 9S. He's just not as fun to play as 2B. His move set is so limited and boring. The whole hacking mechanic is cool but not when its the only effective way to kill enemies as him.

Equip Spear
Hold attack button to throw spear

Spear throw with him does crazy amounts of damage.

This game is technically rough looking in a lot of ways but that only makes it so much more impactful when you come across an angle that catches your eye like this.

I don't even know if I need the spoiler tags but I spoilered just in case because of the weapons I have equipped. It's just the spear everyone has seen from the action gifs and the sword with
the big red stone in it
that you can buy right away from the first weapons merchant. Nothing else at all is spoilery. Let me know if I should remove the tags if I am overreacting lol. :)

Anyway, I took a couple of the same spot but in different poses but I couldn't decide which ones I liked more. They really did an awesome job with 2B's animations and how they really fit her character. I didn't want to post them all so here are the others in case anyone is interested. https://flic.kr/s/aHskWk4H6f

I'm having a blast so far btw. I love the world that has been crafted here.

EDIT: I took and shared these because I thought it might make some good wallpaper. It looks fantastic on my 21:9 screen anyway.

Throw spear is good, as mentioned.

Still not fun though. Honestly a huge bummer since I feel like I've played him more than anyone else. :|

There's a room behind a moveable box in the castle when you jump over the gap in the outside bridge, with a smaller broken bridge below. drop down as you come onto the bridge from the Link type miniboss and dash to the lower left

Directly underneath the save point right before the baby in the forest castle, you need to move a block to get to the weaponsmith.

Cool, thanks guys.

Sounds like I might have to try the spear maybe. lol

Also, how the shit do I
get to the black smith? I hear him working away in there but I can't access his room. Very annoying.

Is it safe to sell everything that the game says can be "sold for money?" I don't wanna sell something I'll need for a quest.

Drop down to the level he his on and pull the block blocking the way out.

I liked the basic greatsword string that ends in a ranged smash. The greatsword throw is garbage, though.

The boomerang looking throw? lol

I mostly just used the small sword until I saw the spear throw damage but either way he's just so limited with only having light strings. I get the idea behind it since he's not a combat model he isn't meant to be on par with the others but it doesn't make for very engaging combat when your strongest options dull down to hold square from afar, and hold triangle.

Hacking is pretty intentionally OP but in such a way that makes even messing with his strings not worth much, since you instead freeze the whole battlefield, do an AoE explosion on an enemy, and chunk away bosses there's little reason to engage in anything beyond that aside from just forcing less repetition. There's even a few instances where the bosses themselves have a hidden revive fullheal mechanic because you can straight stunlock and dumpster them before they even talk or do anything else, the game forces them back to life if you don't wait long enough.

Is there a reason my hacking is barely doing any damage? I'm almost level 60, and there are certain enemies that it won't damage... am I missing something?

Maybe it was because I was overleveled from doing all the subquests, but I never felt like hacking was such a step up in power that I felt compelled to use it all the time. I felt comfortable going back and forth between melee and hacking, so it never really got stale.

Oh, god, it's finally happened. The thing that I feared most of all going into Automata - the musical earworms. The burrow in their earworm-y hooks, and don't let go.

I have been tormented for years after the original Nier, haunted by melodies we didn't have concrete lyrics too. What a blissful hell to once again find myself again, sigh. Give us some concrete fucking lyrics for Nier's and Automata's songs, please, Square, please. I'll pay you so much money to free me from my torment.

I'm very much enamoured with the soundtrack, and while there is also an intentional stylistic similarity to the original Nier, it also seems a lot more eclectic overall. There is a bit less Emi Evans that I would have liked, but the music is great. I think the original Nier felt a lot more cohesive overall with its soundtrack, but I think Automata is also juggling a lot of themes and genres in a way that Nier wasn't, so the choice is fitting in a way. I will say that nothing has immediately dropped my jaw in awe like The Wretched Automatons, Hills of Radiant Winds, etc. I'm not really complaining, though, as I'm pretty smitten with the Resistance camp/Village/Desert themes. Just beautiful, earworm-y goodness. Love the boss music, too.

I also don't know whether to be paranoid about the music choices, as there has been new arrangements of Kaine's theme and part of Shadowlord, but I just don't know if it's 'eeey, let's have a new arrangment of an old fave' or 'this song use has ominous meaning!' (Don't tell me if it's the latter, ha.)

After getting towards the end of Route A, I am baffled how one could manage one section in particular on Very Hard. How.

Having a lovely and sad conversation with

That song is impressive in it's own way because it kills any tension in any scene whatsoever.

Finished Route B.
Who the fuck were those two standing next to 2B and 9S. WHO???? And was that the commander in the bunker when 9S went to his mech?

Started Route C.
Man, did things turn to shit immediately. Oh man, is the virus the same type of thing like Red Eye disease/White Chlorination Syndrome? Was that Monah/the Watchers. Wtf! And oh my god, is A2 awesome or what? A2 might be my favorite.

Pour one out for 2B, You will definitely be missed.

I'm having a weird time playing the
9S
route. Specifically, the side quests that I did the first time appear again, but not all of them. Some quests I have to do again, but the escorting the robot kid to its parents was already done?? It's very strange.
I feel like I should have skipped sidequesting the first go around and do them on the 3rd (4th?) time.

Quests you completed will not appear again. Quests that you didn't do or didn't finish to completion will reset. Some quests are not shared so only 2B or 9S can do them in their respective routes.

Only some story sidequests are repeated. If anything, probably like mandatory filler before main quest.

Oh, you can just perform a launcher with Square + X, at least as
9S
, little details like this help make up for the simple attack strings. Although even that is modulated by having access to really crazy chips that change the gameplay substantially.

It's scales with your weapon attack power, and also bypasses defense.

You could also use the Combust chip for some extra damage as well.

Just started my second playthrough, the game kinda blew my mind with
the boot up sequence actually being recorded. I AFKed in real life, son of a bitch
