11-year-old kicked out of Cub Scouts over gun control question to state senator

WESTMINSTER, Colo. -- A Colorado Cub Scout who said he was kicked out of his den for asking a lawmaker too tough of a question is getting some big name support.

Ames Mayfield said he was told he could no longer participate in Scouts with his current group after a Scout activity involving a question-and-answer session with Colorado State Sen. Vicki Marble.

“He was supposed to research and ask a question that impacts our community,” his mother Lori Mayfield told KDVR.

When it was Ames’ turn, he asked: “An issue that I’m concerned about is common sense gun control. I was shocked that you co-sponsored a bill to allow domestic violence offender to continue to own a gun. ... Why on Earth would you want somebody who beats their wife to have access to a gun?”

WOW. Fucking ridiculous. Glad another group is welcoming him in. Whoever was running that branch is a real piece of shit.

Bet you didn't expect that kind of ether from an 11 year old, huh? She was probably shook.

I would hope that the national organization of the BSA would step in over this, especially given their PR style over the last couple of years. Total BS.

This was local news in my neck of the woods. The guy who interviewed the kid said he treated it like a research paper and just a minute of talking to him you could tell it was his own idea and not something he was coached on.

article doesn't mention the answer?

im really curious what the state senator said. like, its a pretty fucking simple question. would love to hear how he wormed out

Probably something along the lines of a bit of awkwardness & shock at the question, then a non-answer, or deflection as to how this isn't the time and place to talk about gun control followed by a "next question.'

"Why on Earth would you want somebody who beats their wife to have access to a gun?”

what a fucking question, love that the kid got kicked out instead of any actual answers being given. Got give it to children and their ability to simplify things when these days people use massive amounts of bullshit to distract from the issues at hand.

Are you sure he wasn't kicked out of the Cub Scouts because the maximum age is 10?

The senator was a woman from the sound of it which makes it all the more baffling. But yeah, I would've liked to hear her answer too. Probably something like "Guns are for grownups, sweetie, you wouldn't understand."

Was he kicked out of the local chapter or the national organization?

Just his den, which isn't a chapter and only a part of a large pack. A den usually consists of 3-10 kids in a two grade cover. Dens make up a pack.

The person responsible is probably some uppity den leader, basically a volunteer mom or dad. Cub Scouts are a branch of Boy Scouts of America and they do not make decisions like this. This was almost certainly someone in the den, a single person or few that made a very stupid decision.

Are you sure he wasn't kicked out of the Cub Scouts because the maximum age is 10?

This is honestly a very real possibility. Boys older than 10 are only allowed in Cub Scouts if they haven't completed 5th grade yet. It is possible that the kids question garnered unwanted attention and he was removed from the den/pack. Boys older than 10 aren't allowed in Cub Scouts because it is at this time they promote out of the Arrow of Light and go through the Blue And Gold ceremony to graduate out, and then voluntarily choose to join a Boy Scout Troop, which starts in 6th grade and spans through high school.

You can't "kick out" someone from Cub Scouts. This is just another Den mom pulling some mean girls shit.

Thankfully the article points out that the kid has already been invited to another den and is promoting to Boy Scouts in February anyway. Hopefully the local council repudiates the rogue den mom though.

OP should probably update the title and post to include another pack already took him in and he is voluntarily moving into a Boy Scout Troop in February. The bad press should be on the den in question and the decision makers, but not the national organization.

The story also said he was invited to a new den and would be starting Boy Scouts shortly.

Edit: beaten ... That is what I get for trying to post at work lol

The funniest part about this is thinking about a state senator pulling some strings to get an 11 year old kicked out of the Cub Scouts. She probably thought she was pulling some House of Cards caper but really it's the pettiest shit imaginable.

They say they want to raise smart, independent, children who will lead America in the coming decades but then punish them for it. Instead by removing him, you are essentially teaching kids to parrot what they are thought or go along with it or face the consequences.

Good on that kid. People will say all kinds of shit about him and his mom though. We have human excrement so beholden to their god given right to own guns they think Sandy Hook was a false flag.

This story really highlights a huge nationwide problem. The state senator assumes that the boy's mom put him up to this. Because conservatives think that kids can't be liberal, and that they only pick up liberal ideology later in life (at college, for example). We see this all the time.

It's a good question. What the fuck is up with the Scouts for booting the kid for asking a fucking question during a damn Q&A session? It's not like he rushed the stage or anything.

fuckin' snowflakes, what do they want, a safe space?

sounds like the scouts has been really corrupted, at least at certain levels. it's a shame because the idea of the institution, I think, is pretty great.

edit - whoa Trump wishes he had that woman's hands

There was a study I ran across (oddly enough, done by a conservative texas think tank) that found that "Kids are liberalized by college" to be a complete myth. That's how it's perceived by their relatives, but in actuality, the kids are liberal/less religious already, and the change in social environment that allows them room to come out of their shells without the external pressures is what actually leads o the change.

So now republicans need a safespace from kids asking "tough" questions? Makes that diaper protest even funnier.

Edit: Really good question tho.

Why the Hell would you kick a child out of cub scouts for doing the assignment and asking a legitimate question to one of their representatives?
