Endless Space |Intel Thread| 4X Space Strategy by ex-Ubi/EA devs

I think at the prices they're asking, everyone shouldn't hesitate beyond "Do I want the Admiral...or Emperor edition?!"
Agreed. I've never gotten into a 4X before, but I'll definitely pick this up with a friend so we can try it multiplayer. Hopefully there's some fun cooperative play.

I've got a feeling the soundtrack will be sublime, given the clean and space-operatic ambience they're going for! Tasteful. The alpha trailer certainly paints such a picture.
Agreed. The map really has that classic 4X aesthetic. I don't think it's much of a stretch to believe the music will lean that way as well.
Past examples:
Imperium Galactica II - Human 2
Masters of Orion II - Galactic Theme III
Disney World - Space Mountain

I love me some 4X, and the price is right. I'm jumping on this as we speak.

Good lord, this game is gorgeous. If they stick to the slick graphics and aesthetic, it might help to bring in people not normally interested in 4X.

I loved IG2's soundtrack...I hear the re-release on iOS leaves a lot to be desired, but goddamn, it was the first strategy game where I felt at the head of a vast empire. The OST, I suspect, had a lot to do with that.

A fine observation. Reading previews and impressions makes me think this will be one of the big 'gets' for the genre - deep, yet accessible...and gorgeous.

Hopefully they have some good marketing behind them. I'd love for this to become a media darling just by virtue of what it is.

I was so excited for Sword of the Stars 2 until everyone realized it was awful and broken. Endless Space appeared on my radar at JUST the right time.

what? Sins:Rebellion is made by these guys?

No, but funnily enough both Kerberos and Ironclad were formed by people from Barking Dog.

Anyway..I'm really digging how Endless Space is developing. And I absolutely love the 4X ressuregence we;ve been enjoying in past few years

Just bought the Emperor special edition, the price is excellent, screens look slick as hell. Happy to support a game like this at this day and age !

After some thought, I'm chipping in for Emperor Edition once I get home from work. At that price I'm more than happy to support a game like this.

been fiddling around with the game, it is quite deep in the mechanics department, but you can easily understand those same mechanics fairly quickly, the combat is also fun. Loving this game so far, and no bugs as off yet !

We're going to have to get some GAF games going when the PBEM multi is ready!

Have they said when co-op is going to be available? I'm dying to play this with my roommate.

Played the alpha for a bit. The game is really great looking. It's so rare for game developers making space-based games to hire talented artists. The HUD is fantastic too.

Can't speak for the gameplay from the little I played but it does seem to be pretty involved. I'm excited to dig into it.

No! You don't know what you've done! *double clicks IG2 icon* There goes the rest of my day. :/

Glad I found this thread. I saw the game up on steam last night and was checking it out. Still reading up on it, but I have a feeling that for $25 I'll have it preordered by the end of the day.

One question/Idea:

Is there anyway to isolate yourself for a bit? Block travel lanes? Take your system off the map for some turns? In any empire game, I'm busy doing empire-building then by turn 50, everybody has expanded more than I have and are at my door.

The Horatio for example, have an anti-expansion trait. Maybe a shield around your system, like in in the book, "Pandora Star", if not I'll suggest it in the forum.

Something inside me tells me "Be careful, this has totally flown beneath your radar somehow!" and another part says "Holy shit that actually looks pretty awesome!"

I must be monumentally stupid. How do I produce more ships? The military tab only lets me modify ship designs and organize fleets.

Yeah, I figured it out just after I posted. The buttons on the lower half of the system screen look like they should be columns, not tabs. That's what threw me off.

Well, I got the Emperor Edition. Not sure if I want to play the Alpha or not, but I might take a peek. It sure is downloading quickly.

The alpha is pretty much a fully functional game, and in its alpha state, it's already at the standard of most 4X games.

That's pretty much it. Do I want to play the alpha, which is nearly a complete game already, or do I want to save the surprises for the full game?

Eh, I'll probably try out the Alpha. Since I get those points to use on the official site, I should at least know what I'm talking about.

I am so close to impulse buying this, it looks so damn interesting!
What is the verdict of the current gameplay? Have they something cool going on for someone who have played Sins of a Solar Empire, Civilization, Galactic Civilizations 2?

Exactly. If nothing else, playing the alpha will allow you to make informed decisions on where you think they should take the game from here. I think that's enticing enough to try the Alpha.

It's essentially Master of Orion with a lot of gameplay conventions from Civ. It's really nothing like Sins, though.

If you're still on the fence, you should check out OverloadUT's Let's Play that he posted yesterday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5V0zXc5SLc

But is it good? Are people enjoying it?

I fucking love it, and the SA thread is full of 4X fans that are really enjoying it as well.

Seriously, check out the Let's Play. It's an hour and a half, and Overload kinda reviews it as he plays.

Just bought this - I would have paid even more if they'd asked! I can't believe I haven't heard of this until now. This should get more press!

Since I'm finally at a computer I figured I'd throw my earlier impressions in here.

Endless Space Impressions

I am super impressed with Endless Space so far. The ui is just as awesome as it looks.

It seems to be heavily Dune inspired which makes me ecstatic (the way the planets line up is way too similar to the opening scene of the movie to be a coincidence, and your main currency is "dust" lol).

Alt tab friendly. And the tutorial screens are thorough and well written.

Some of the navigating through menu controls are really terrible. Not sure if I can rebind them or not (can't find anything in the menu, but you know, alpha). In the research screen for example you can left click to queue up research after your current one is done, but left clicking it again doesn't remove it from the queue. Right clicking at any point is just a back button. Some of it just doesn't make sense. Tech tree is nice. It's not single branch, so there are dependencies on earlier tech, but it's not like civ where you end up getting shit you don't want just because you have to. It's separated into 4 different bushes so you can just focus entirely on research if you want.

It's not balanced yet apparently so I won't dock it for some of the stuff (and it could be that I don't fully understand them yet too!). Heroes seem over priced, and the game seemed overly slow (later as I would check the new game page again 'normal' speed is for a 'slow paced game' and 'fast' is 'a normal speed game' so yeah that makes tons of sense :/ ) . I don't know if I've just been raised on more complicated stuff or if it's the lack of graphs (big sad face here) but it seems a tad simple. More complicated than civ 5 for sure, but not really to gal civ 2 level.

Also the map is smaller than I was expecting from the description of it. It might just be a visual trick as it groups the stars into systems instead of showing all the planets from the map screen. Stuff may end up being bigger than it is through a visual illusion.

You never get to actually customize what your ship looks like (completely unlike gal civ 2). You get a really attractive looking base and then throw mods on that have no visual representation and just add stats. I don't know how complicated this gets so not sure if you can leave the computer to just auto improve over the game.

The diplomacy and trading screens are hard to mess up. They're just like any other strategy game's.

Graphics are pretty good. It doesn't have some real space porn in it like Sins of a solar empire (it might in the rts parts, but in the normal map screen it doesn't), but when it zooms on planets, those textures are really nice.

Music is amazing. Half just down beat techno thats really relaxing and nice in long strategy games and when stuff speeds up it's like a non-shitty linken park song.

Still haven't tried any of the rts battle parts. Don't have a military yet!

Oh jeez, I just played for 3 hours and had no idea until I quit, and realized it was almost time to cook dinner.

??? I thought combat was turn-based?

It's semi-turn based. Either you can set auto and it plays out in the background, or you choose manual.

In manual, you have a small amount of time to choose actions for each phase of combat (long range, mid range, close range).

So yeah, it is turn based, but it forces you to choose pretty quickly.

SteveWinwood, you should choose Fast when you play if you find it slow. The tooltip for Fast even says "The regular pace for the game". Normal is listed as a "slower pace".

Someone who played Sword of the Stars 1 and the alpha here and can make some comparisons?
Avoided SotS2 till now because of the rather bad critics (alot of bugs).
Played SotS for 100 of hours so i'm very interested in this and had my mouse already over the buy button in Steam.
Sadly i didn't like Sins of Solar Empire but i will give it another try soon.

Thetrin, what races are there at this point?

SteveWinwood, chuck those impressions on the Amplitude forums if you haven't already! The devs would appreciate it. I do wonder if the ex-Eugen guys on staff did work on the UI...it sounds a touch like their games.

Starting to get pretty interested in this game just looking at the screens. Is there any frame of reference as to something current I can compare it too? Is it more combat oriented like Sins of a Solar Empire? Empire / society building like Galactic Civilizations 2? Is it comparable to Sword of the Stars? I pretty much like all those games, so wouldn't complain if there were some similarities with them.
