Furry-GAF

I tried drawing something, but it didnt inspire anyone else to :S

It was a good effort, you should keep practicing. I think about trying to draw every once in a while but never do, I'm terrible at it. I tried taking a class once, everyone else managed to make some scribbles that at least resembled the subject matter. Me, not so much.

I won't even attempt to try, I'm horrible at just about everything creative. :(

I feel the same way.

Doesn't stop me from drawing. Firehead loves it when I do. After some practice I certainly suck less.

So... I like some furry art including many that's posted in this thread, but I don't like many/most of the other things in the furry fandom. What does that make me?

Whaddya mean by "other things"?

Hmm... Instead, let's just say that I like the art. There was a period a few years ago when I saw myself as a furry and tried to get into the fandom, but it didn't feel right and I ultimately decided it wasn't for me and now I casually stick to the art.

EDIT: It's not really "not like", more like indifferent.

Hmm.

I'd guess you could be considered Furry. I mean, I'm by no means active in the fandom proper yet I wouldn't hesitate to label myself as one.

I don't really see myself as one but okay, a very mild one then. I can tell from what you've posted in this and other threads that you're way more into it than I ever was.

The internet is kinda interesting though, since it's okay to be attracted to aliens (looking at you, Mass Effect) but as soon as it gets some fur on it people rage and are disgusted. To me it's on the same scale; if it's not too alien/animal-looking I'm okay with it. I think it all started when I was thirteen and Starfox Adventures just had been released. You know what I'm talking about... That and our recent broadband connection at home lead to a lot of fanfiction and fan forums, and then it just escalated. I think that was my "teenage identity crisis" since I was a very calm and normal teenager and that was the only "identity-seeking" I did. My interest gradually declined and I eventually decided it just wasn't for me, however as I've said I still enjoy some of the art. I also still know way more Starfox lore than I should. So now you know something I've never told anyone else before, not even over the internet. Feels kinda good, actually.

People who say stuff like that doesn't count are just in denial ;)

As for your last point: now theres a feel I know. Feels good to get things off your chest and open up every once in a while.

Cheezmo is all about the feels today.

Thinking about it, all my college friends know that I'm a furry, but none of my high school or earlier ones. Even though it was in high school that I started to get into the whole thing and started making my character.

I don't know that I had a point here.

-none- of my college friends have any idea, except the ones I realized are also furries thanks to internet history >.>; It's a joking topic of discussion with them, a secret to everyone else.

Honestly, it's just a kink for me, not a lifestyle, and I think there's a lot of other people who feel the same way =\

I think it's the same thing like that "homophobes are homosexually attracted" study that popped up the other day. Speaking of that, I've noticed there seems to be a rather high percentage of bi-/homosexuality in the furry fandom, is there any reason for this? I have nothing against it and is genuinely curious. I do remember it as a bit annoying, since I'm straight.

Sure is an entertaining kink though >.>;

Yeah, most anti-furry sentiment is from closet furries. It's pretty fun "uncloseting" them x3

Yeah, I've noticed that too. Heterosexuality seems to be the minority rather than the norm.

Not really sure what the deal is - never heard anyone get too deep into it, tbh.

I'm sure there are historian types that have dug into it and figured it out. People did academic papers on this shit, after all.

Interestingly enough, there was a study two pages ago that tried to study this, among most things:

Personally, I consider myself fairly open at the moment in regards to who or what I like, but outside of online, I'm only really interested in girls. So I'd say it's not a matter of simply one or the other.

edit: Yeah, I guess kink would be more accurate for certain aspects.

That's mostly how is for me too, I don't really participate in the fandom at all aside from collecting art but still consider myself a furry.

Exactly, I don't see how it's any different. No one had problems with all the alien fucking in Star Trek either, even Klingons.

Beyond the kink aspect I also really like furries/anthros in general, used in comics, books, animation, games, etc. and wish they were used more in popular media that's not just aimed at kids.

I feel the same way (I'm a huge Sam & Max fan), but I feel like that might just stem from the kink part, the same way most foot fetishists love Quentin Tarintino movies :p

Ironically, there even was a usenet group in the early 90s that used "lifestyle" in the desc related to early furry fandom. But... one must bear in mind how long ago that was. There was no web, no online communities like today. The subject was so niche, that I think it was easier for it to seem like a lifestyle than it is today. Because it actually was - being involved required a lot of legwork, traveling all over in real life, distributing hand printed fan magazines, and whatnot.

IMO much of the "lifestyle" stuff since then has partly been from outsiders disparaging furries. Playing up and overselling how "warped" furry ppl are, and how much they 'clearly have no life outside of furries'. Combine it with a few fruits from the community who get on TV shows or such and actually portray it that way, and a meme is born.

Sometimes, new people to the American fandom actually think they're supposed to find a lifestyle or something just because they've heard about it so much, ah-heh.

The furry thing is far to easy to access and increasingly suburbanized to be a lifestyle today. You have to be a real hobbyist to come close, such as people who actually build costumes or create a lot of content like artwork and writing.

I'm glad the GAF furries are realistic about this. Other websites with furry threads I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole had tons of people spouting bullsht like "Oh my god no, like ten percent of furries look at the porn, I identify with a wolf spiritually, sexual furries are disgusting!"

The average person will find that sort of bullshit significantly more off putting than "I have a fetish."

Totally agree with the above posts.

Particularly Lu's post - reminds me of my views on certain aspects of the Brony community, in fact.

But let's not go there.

You still need a label to describe a general population. Is there something better?

oh, well in terms of defining a group of people that dedicate themselves to it, it works.

im just saying that in general its an all encompassing segregation on the internet
which can be amusing as well as annoying
thought it is completely understandable that sexually charged avatars weird people out, kind of like the scene in a clockwork orange where he is forced to watch all this insane stuff
