I've picked up 8½ and La Strada already. Based Criterion.

Any of you guys know of some other good ones?

How classy and/or trashy are you willing to get? Because there's a ton of Italian giallo / horror I could recommend.

Windu

never heard about the cat, apparently
first ones that come to mind are A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

Pier Paolo Pasolini is a bit of a mixed bag, but Medea is an amazing movie. I also liked his early movies (Accattone and Mamma Roma).
Also check out Luchino Visconti: Give at least Il Gattopardo and Rocco e i suoi fratelli a try :)

at last, for christ's sake
I'd start with the classics: Vittorio De Sica, Fellini, Rossellini, Dino Risi, Mario Monicelli

Umberto D. (one of the saddest movies ever)
Miracle in Milan
The Bycicle Thief
Amarcord
La Dolce Vita
Giulietta Degli Spiriti
I Mostri
A Difficult Life
The Easy Life
Operazione San Gennaro (found this one particularly hilarious)
La Grande Guerra
I Soliti Ignoti
Il Vedovo

modern classics? There are few, but worthy

Paolo Sorrentino's Le Conseguenze Dell'Amore and Il Divo (Tony Servillo is the BEST italian actor)

Garrone's Gomorrah

Nanni Moretti's Caro Diario

ACAB and Diaz are two massive punches in the guts, also. Can't remember the directors, tho

and I wouldn't also miss two TV series about Italian gangs so good they really shouldn't be overlooked

Romanzo Criminale
Gomorra - La Serie

here you go, you can start with those. There are way more, but this should be a fine introduction for a neophite

I highly recommend checking out some of the early Dario Argento work

Suspiria,Tenebrae, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage and Deep Red are all excellent. Inferno isn't as highly regarded as those but I have a huge soft spot for it. Th

I have a soft spot for Italian horror as well. The Beyond, Cannibal Holocaust and Cut and Run are worth a look.

Cinema Paradiso
Rome Open City
Bicycle Thief
The Leopard
Rocco and His Brothers
The Best of Youth (very long, but so good)
Amarcord

The Battle of Algiers

Not to mention a ton of spaghetti westerns.

Those are American productions with an Italian director.

They're Italian.

Love and Anarchy

The Night Porter (this one is pretty fucked up)

The Consequences of Love (Italian: Le conseguenze dell'amore)

I took an Italian film class and basically watched a lot of the films mentioned.

Italian movies have so much to offer, even outside the heavy hitters. Eurocrime/Poliziotteschi, giallos, supernatural horror, Mad Max ripoffs, Dirty Harry ripoffs, Ripoff ripoffs. It's a buffet of trashy, beautiful brilliance.

Who Can Kill A Child?
Blood And Black Lace
Deep Red
Sleepless
Demons 1/2
The Beyond
Twitch of the Death Nerve
Don't Torture A duckling
Black Sunday

Fist bump. If you're interested in Italo Horror than Jack's list is a great introduction barring Mother of Tears and Sleepless. A couple other choice picks

Arrivederci Amore Ciao http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0325011/ Fantastic film. A little hard to find on DVD and I don't think it's on Blu. Not very well known outside Italy.

Almost Human http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071840/?ref_=fn_al_tt_4 Fantastic Euro-crime film. Also hard to find, might be able to find it on Ebay but the DVD has been long out of print.

Dellamorte Dellamore aka Cemetery Man http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109592/?ref_=nv_sr_1 An amazing Art house/Horror/Comedy. One of the best Italian films of the 90's.

Autopsy http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073327/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2 Incredibly unique Giallo (Uniquely Italian stylish murder mysteries, the direct precursor to the American slasher film). Easy to find and worth checking out. Has a Roman Polanski vibe to it.

The Psychic http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075614/?ref_=nv_sr_1 Another Lucio Fulci classic. If you like the Giallo's then this is a must watch.

To Be Twenty http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077191/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 (I couldn't believe this is on Amazon VOD http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004XC5LQY/?tag=neogaf0e-20 ) Spectacular film. A product of the times but it aged very well, the ending takes a hard right turn and will gut punch you. Fernando Di Leo's masterpiece.
