What were the smallest and largest cartridge sizes of certain consoles?

I know that N64 games were between 4 and 64 MegaBytes (32MBit/512MBit) large.

I am especially interested in Mega Drive/Genesis, SNES, Game Boy, Game Gear and Neo Geo.

Genesis had smallest of 128kb and biggest of 4MB for retail, 8MB for Pier Solar. I think SNES is the same except biggest retail cart is 5MB.

EDIT: those are bytes, not bits. EDIT: For some reason I thought Tales of Phantasia was 5MB and had no idea any Genesis game was 5MB.

Wasn't Super Street Fighter II 5MBytes (40MBits) or so? And do you know what games were 128Kbyte (1MBit)? I guess stuff like Flicky or Columns

I think SNES is the same except biggest retail cart is 5MB.

I always thought 512KByte (4MBit) was the smallest size.

I think RE2 is the biggest N64 game. I'm probably wrong.

That and Perfect Dark and Banjo Tooie iirc.

I've read that Densha de Go! 2 is the largest GBC cart, weighing in at 64 megs or 8MB.
It's a train simulator, so maybe timetables took up all that memory.

Oh I thought this was going to be a thread about physical sizes. I've damn near lost my Vita cartridges countless times.

Columns is definitely 128kb. I think you're right on SNES games - my memory is off today. Perfect Dark and Banjo Tooie are both 32MB, the only other two 64MB games I know are Conker's Bad Fur Day and Pokemon Stadium 2 (US version)

Do you want LARGE cartridges ? xD

Hehe. Was there a special reason for Neo Geo cartridges being that huge, or was it just for bragging purpose?

Oops, I mixed them up. But I thought PD was 512MBit.

I chuckled remembering that I paid $70 on release day for SNES Street Fighter 2 because the rom size made the cart more expensive.

My cousin got SFII CE for Mega Drive and was bragging about the huge rom size. 24 MEGS!! 6x as large as Sonic!!

As a kid I wondered where all the data went, as Sonic was so much "larger" than SFII with its small 12 stages. I didn't know that Platformers were nothing but copy & paste.

Kingdom Hearts: CoM is not the only 32MB game for GBA. There's around 95 with that size, like Mother 3 or Spyro: The Eternal Night, for example.

DS has plenty of 512MB games as well, like Love Plus +.

I just put one example per system.

Densha de go is on the game boy? Holy shit.

This game is really awesome, by the way.
Densha de Go was also on Neo Geo Pocket and WonderSwan.

Just looked it up at Youtube, the game has voice acting and the tracks are scrolled like some kind of video. Maybe that took up lots of the space.

Found it !

I don't know the exact size, but I refuse to believe a 185min movie would take ONLY 32 mega on a gba cartridge =p

They are praticaly the arcade board on a plastic case with very few changes.

A few more:

MSX/2: 0.75MB (Genchou Hishi)
SMS: 0.75MB (Street Fighter II)
PC Engine/TG16: 1.5MB (Street Fighter II' CE)
Lynx: 0.25MB (Pit Fighter)
Game Gear: 1MB (Sonic Blast)
Pokémon Mini: 0.5MB (Togepi's Great Adventure)
PS Vita: 4GB (Uncharted: Golden Abyss)

And I believe Kirby's Adventure was only 6Mbit (or 0.75MB).

How did it work? Bank switching?

They needed room for all the ROM memories. The memory technology was more or less the same of MD/SNES but the games were like 10x bigger.

Largest N64 games are RE2 and Conker, being 64 MB. I am pretty sure these are the only two games to use a 64 MB cartridge (512 MBit = 64 MB)

Banjo-Tooie and Perfect Dark are both 32 MB.

The controls of the DS one are awful (content, too) and the series is dead T_T Thanks, Squenix...

I'd be curious to know why such a size for GBA DdG. Timetables, really?
Edit: well, voices are probably a good reason... I'd be curious to know how the display works.

N64: 64MB (Resident Evil 2)
While most of the information on the two discs was identical, it's still absolutely amazing to think they managed to squeeze a 700MB-ish game onto a 64MB cartridge while adding a bunch of new content and completely revamp the audio. The compression companies were capable of back in the day blows my mind.

There are bigger games than 4GB on Vita, but 4GB (actually ~3.8GB) is as big as the carts go right now.

SD Gundam G Generation actually ships on two carts, and both Borderlands 2 and Senran Kagura Estival Versus are over 5000MB when installed digitally (the carts needing an update on your memory card to fill out the remainder of the base game.

Lynx has one 1mb game. Forgot the name though.
