Developed and published by Codemasters, a company known for its racing series such as Dirt and Grid, Dirt Rally has finally shed its Early Access roots and been released on PC. Dirt Rally brings the Dirt series back to its Colin McRae Rally roots, featuring simulation-level handling on realistic rally stages and courses from around the world. The final product features 39 vehicles and 75+ stages across 10 locations on which to terrorize the locals.

The Cars of Dirt Rally

Dirt Rally’s vehicle selection ranges from the humble Mini Cooper of the 1960s all the way up the ferocious Lancia Delta S4 of the legendary Group B rally racing class. Its 39 vehicles are broken down into 11 classes:

  • 1960s
  • 1970s
  • 1980s
  • Group B (4WD and RWD)
  • Group A
  • F2 Kit Car
  • R4
  • 2000s
  • 2010s
  • Hillclimb
  • Rallycross (RX)

Each class is full of its own unique handling cars and provides a very different experience as you move up the ladder from the low-powered front-wheel drive cars of the 1960s to the high downforce, rear-wheel drive powerhouses of the modern day.

1960s

The 1960s saw a movement towards more and more purpose built rally vehicles. Both of the cars in this class were top of their game during the time they raced, with the Mini Cooper S winning multiple rally championships across Europe and the Lancia Fulvia HF winning almost every Italian championship from 1965 to 1973.

1970s

The 1970s saw a shift from the low-powered front-wheel drive cars of the 60s towards higher powered motors and a rear-wheel drive system. The cars featured in this category are sure to satisfy those of you who love to stabilize the unstable.

Group B

What many see as the pinnacle or rally racing, and motorsport in general, is that of Group B rally. The cars featured in this class are the answer to the age old question “Sure you can, but should you?” Included in this category are monsters such as the 400+ horsepower Lancia Delta S4 and the wild Lancia 037.

Group A

Developed mainly as a reaction to Group B’s eventual ban, Group A cars feature lower powered, safer cars that may seem inferior to the Group B behemoths but in reality were quicker due to their increased traction and better handling.

1980s

The cars of the 1980s shared many of the same characteristics of the Group A, for many of them also belonged in Group A. This class features production-based models that were built to stand up to the rigors of motorsport and ultimately did very well.

F2 Kit Car

The FIA 2-Litre World Rally Cup class cars are a bit of an unknown quantity to many motorsport fans. These cars may appear to be dinky little hatchbacks, but their lightweight chassis and impressive powerplants allowed them to produce very quick times during their career.

2000s

The 2000s class in Dirt Rally features vehicles spanning many years from the World Rally Car class of the World Rally Championship. These cars feature low displacement engines in a lightweight chassis with high downforce and great handling.

R4

Group N’s R4 class brings an iconic rivalry into Dirt Rally. Within this class are the Subaru Impreza STI and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X. Both of these models hold high standings in the world of rally racing and their inclusion in Dirt Rally allows everyone to experience what makes these cars so special.

2010s

The 2010s class of rally cars is derived from the earlier S2000 class specifications. These cars are smaller and limited by much stricter regulations enforced by the FIA. Don’t let the regulations fool you, though, as even the most talented of drivers will have to bite their tongue when the intense acceleration of the 2010 cars throws you into that tree you didn’t even see coming.

Rallycross (RX)

Straying a bit from the original stage-based layout, Dirt Rally also includes a variety of Rallycross cars to compete in the closed course action. These cars are purpose-built (but still based on production models) to be as nimble as possible on the mixed surfaces of rallycross courses.

Hillclimb

The cars of this category are some of the most powerful and lightest cars to ever be created. Their purpose is one of pure speed, being tasked with tackling the mighty hillclimb that is Pikes Peak. Their huge wings keep them planted to the tarmac and dirt as they climb the winding road in the race to the clouds.

The Locations of Dirt Rally

Dirt Rally’s locales cover all the terrain you would ever need in your journey as you face not only the rocky slopes of Argolis, Greece but the snowy, icy roads of Monte Carlo in Monaco. As you travel the 10 locations over 9 countries, you will receive all the practice you will ever need to face any surface life throws at you.

Argolis, Greece

Greece provides all the gravel you will ever need as you careen down or trudge up the mountainous slopes of Argolis. Watch out for those tricky hairpins...

Powys, Wales

The Welsh sure know how to flow as their roads cut through the valleys of Powys like they’ve always been there. In Wales you’ll face a slippery surface as you navigate wet gravel and avoid trees and fences as they fly by at 80+ mph.

Monte Carlo, Monaco

The narrow roads of Monaco are a force to be reckoned with as you delicately place your car where it needs to be on the streets of Monte Carlo. Not only will you be within inches of certain death if you were to take a turn too quick, but they’ve decided to throw this rally in the peak of winter! Watch out for icy patches as you deal with your fear of heights.

Värmland, Sweden

It’s back to the cold with Värmland in Sweden. The most recent location added to Dirt Rally’s roster also brings in the newest road condition: snow. In the form of both loose and compacted snow, Codemasters have mastered the art of the fluffy white stuff, and even implemented “snow bank” technology that allows you to gently caress the piles surrounding the stage for a bit more room. Be careful, though, go too deep and you’ll quickly find yourself facing the wrong direction.

The legendary status of Pikes Peak should not be lost on you all. The almost 12 and a half mile circuit is a race against the clock as you climb almost a mile up the highway to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado. Codemasters have included both the original mixed surface version and the newly paved version for all to enjoy.

The Modes of Dirt Rally

Dirt Rally is chock full of content, but what good is content if you can't put it to use? Well, don't worry, because Dirt Rally also has many different modes for you to mess around in. First and foremost is the Career mode. In this mode, you start from the bottom and work your way up, competing in various championships in order to earn more money to buy new cars. You have at your disposal your selected Crew Chief along with a team of engineers to repair your vehicle after those inevitable crashes. With any luck you will quickly become a rally superstar and will take your place on top of the podium!

Next up we've got the varied online events at your disposal. Within Dirt Rally you will find various challenges, such as the Daily, Weekly, and Monthly challenges, in all of which you compete against the Dirt Rally community in order to earn much needed money to buy new cars for your garage. You may also compete PvP via the rallycross discipline, in which you and others around the world take to the same track at the same time and race your hearts out.

As an extension of the online community, you may join a Dirt Rally League to compete against your friends in custom events. Don't let your friendship keep you from setting a new best time on the latest event!

I love this game. After watching Drew play this on a Giant Bomb video early in the year I went and bought this despite knowing nothing about rally.

I'm still terrible at it but I've had so much fun bouncing around the hills and into trees, rocks, cars, and the poor people standing much to close to the track.

Glad to see it out of early access finally and we get some new tracks to drive on.

Great OT, this game is really special. Codemasters took no prisoners and it belongs on goty lists despite racers never getting much of a shake come end of year.

I bought this in the latest steam sale but I'm yet to install it.

After reading the OT, I should install this game.

Years of easy rally games have made this game flat out hard for me but thats ok, we needed a challenge. Bought on Steam early and will double dip on X1 when its out. Great great game!

Guess it's time to get back into Dirt Rally.

The early access version has been pretty solid except for one thing... the save file. I've quit playing it after 8 hours because the game kept reverting the save file to a previous time after acquiring the Subaru WRX STI. So I hope the official release means that the save file problem is fixed.

Welcome to the OT of the greatest rally game ever made! I've literally un-installed all of my other rally games, no need to ever play them again.

Great OT. Can't believe the amount of content this game has now.

Can't wait until the console release, want to play it so badly!

I bought this game for my dad the day it came out in Early Access since he's such a huge rally fan. He has now put in 327 hours into it and doesn't plan on stopping. I played a little bit and it seems like a great game.

Playing with a steering wheel is hard!

kind of wanted to get this on ps4 but i should probably just go through steam (better looking/framerate)

i'll probably pick it up during the winter sale

so in the list of supported wheels is see "Microsoft Wireless Xbox 360 Racing Wheel" this is talking about this wheel correct? and have they gotten FFB to work with this wheel on PC? (because as far as ive known, in the past this wheel emulates a 360 controller when plugged into a PC and has no FFB)

I'd like to know because so far ive played this game since early access with a gamepad and id love to pull this wheel out from storage since im strapped for cash form buying a true PC FFB wheel/pedals/shifter.

Amazing OT!

So i just played again, after several weeks of off time. Now i'm incredibly rusty, crashed at every corner, but it's still enjoyable though.

Dirt Rally is the best rally game ive ever played.

I would have liked a better career mode, but the driving is perfect.

Nice and informative OT.

I look forward to joining the pc players in April when it releases on console. I can't believe we will finally have a good rally game again.

Nice OT. Been playing this on Steam, its a wonderful racing game.Looking at those wheels has made decide to buy one...just which one.

This is better than Richard ?

In my opinion yes, and it's the first rally game that I can say is "better" than RBR. I've barely played RBR at all since DIRT Rally came out in early access, I honestly don't see the need to even keep it installed anymore, but as of yet I've not unistalled it (purely due to sentimental value tho).

Sweet OT! I haven't had the chance to play this as much as I'd like, but I'm going to dig into it over the Christmas break.

Just to throw in a silly option, I was playing this with the Steam controller the other day (using gyro). Reposting from the controller thread:

Doing this in the in-game advanced gamepad settings changed everything:

And then in advanced gyro settings (response curve and deadzones are the important bits):

Aggressive response curve made things super fun and snappy - but only for hillclimb and rallycross events. In regular rally stages, I have to set it back to Linear to make the car even slightly manageable. The narrower, less forgiving tracks are a big factor in this, but it feels like there's more to it than that, and I can't quite put my finger on it. Possibly the different cars and road surfaces too. The game is ridiculously hardcore.

tl;dr - Fun for the wide open stuff, murderball on the main rally stages. The controller is a legit wheel replacement in some sims (eg. GTR2), but not this one!

So getting back to real controls, here's a video that did the rounds the other day, of a rally driver playing DiRT Rally in a proper cockpit. Absolutely insane.

So many omissions in that car list! Is there any word of DLC?

Nope, maybe we'll get some news after they release the console versions.

They did a survey though, a couple of weeks ago, there were a bunch of questions about future contents for DiRT Rally.

Fantastic OT. I've had this since it went up for early access on Steam earlier this year and I've absolutely loved it.

Amazing OT, love the initial gif, thank you for your hard work!

I've been giving feedback to this game since it came out despite not having it. Their community manager (who is now working for EA) has done a good job with the community, streaming, making interviews and answering questions and it's great to see the final product releasing on PC and Consoles as well.

I have all the Dirt games on steam (except the first one) and I can't wait to get this one but I might have to wait a bit to keep myself in budget so I might go for the physical edition or the console version.

I played Colin McRae Rally this week and, well, it was hard to digest so this will be a night & day difference.

For those already playing, please, please post some screenshots in here every now and then! :)

Not yet, but I remember a lot of cars having artwork on a background board in one of the early videos Codemasters put up. Most of those cars got put in the game, but there were a lot of rarer ones that didn't show up. Hopefully they'll throw out a pack or three of cars and maybe some new stages.

Possibly a stupid question, but how do you take screenshots? Is there a button I've missed?

F12 on steam - don't forget to set it to save an uncompressed copy too ;) - or you can use other things like Fraps, for example.

Guess it's time to get back in. Haven't played it since April or whatnot.

I know there are enough actual tracks to justify the price, but presenting reverse versions as being equal to them, so they can more or less double the number they put down in their marketing material, is just cheap and less than honest.

Can't wait to really dive into this more and Driveclub when I get my wheel at the end of the month.

Both will be like completely new experiences.

Love these! Thank you for posting.

Thanks, bro!

I have to tell you that there's some slight Reshade over it, tho. FXAA, Lumasharpen, CA and Film Grain over two of them. And the Hyundai is with a modded livery, here if anybody is interested.
