Miyamoto on Iwata's involvement with Switch

I know you weren't as personally involved with Switch's development, but were there any tables flipped?

Nothing really in terms of 180 degrees, but myself, Mr. Takeda and Mr. Iwata were more providing feedback during development. So a lot of the younger staff would give us presentations, and we would give them feedback and make decisions if necessary. The feedback that we did provide I think was put to good use, and I don't think there were any times where we had major clashes of ideas. If anything, we had to think about how to make Switch unique, and there's a certain cost associated with that. So it was like, "Oh my God, it's going to be a lot more expensive. How are we going to deal with this?" We struggled with that together as a team.

Is there anything in particular about Switch that reflects Satoru Iwata's involvement? [Iwata was Nintendo's president from 2002 to 2015, and passed away in July 2015.]

I mentioned that Mr. Iwata, Mr. Takeda and myself provided feedback and made decisions, but ultimately Mr. Iwata was the head of development, so he put a lot of thought and time into Switch. I think that the idea of Nintendo Switch being a device you can take out and anywhere, and the idea of it being a system that really allows networking and communicating with people, I think that's something Mr. Iwata put a lot of emphasis on.

Because Mr. Iwata was tech-savvy, a lot of our discussion involved trying to figure out how to make the technical things like network capabilities or servers or whatever fun. For example, think about when we added the ability to use a browser on the DS [Nintendo's two-screen gaming handheld—the browser was added to North American systems in 2007]. As time goes on, all of these services become more and more advanced, and so we need to think about "How do we incorporate mobile devices or new browser features that come up?" That's something Mr. Iwata and I discussed a lot, really trying to decide what to do and what not to do in our hardware.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Nintendo Switch...Iwatas final gift to us. Thanks You !!

Do you guys think we'll still see Iwata in the credits of Super Mario Odyssey? I'm pretty sure he'll be there for Breath of the Wild.

The entire design and concept of Switch is brilliant. I love how much it incorporates from previous generations while also managing to be sleek and powerful. Can't wait to see more games

Come on, who the fuck is going to use their Switch to browse the internet? Literally NO ONE uses their 3DS, Vita, PS4 or Xbone's stock browsers. Everyone has mobile phones, they use that instead.

Not everyone actually, a friend of mine doesn't have a smartphone and uses the Wii U browser on a regular basis. My fiance and I personally share a smartphone so if she goes out with it then I'm a little stuck.

Anyway this debate has been going on for ages across other threads, let's leave this for Iwata.

The Wii U is my primary browser and has been for years.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
For a handheld, its a pretty sleek piece of hardware.

Shame Nintendo has to prop it up as a console which is an uphill battle.

i know people hate the Switch and all but its quite an interesting piece of hardware, more appealing than the Wii U (except games so far,but im sure they will eventually get there)

I agree with you but... there was a thread a while ago where data was release on which system was used the most to watch porn. It's my personal belief that whoever is bothered by the Switch not having a Web browser just wants the Web browser to watch porn on the go threw random WiFi points.

On topic

Thanks Iwata!

You help bring a system that suits my current life style.

That sounds more like GAF than Nintendo. I've seen a few reps call it a console but that certainly isn't the basis of their message.

Conversely, I think most people like/love the switch. I've had co-workers and contractors who completely skipped Wii u, pre ordering the switch without any infomercial from myself.

Thank you Mr. Iwata.

I get his point but Wii U had a sweet ass browser, the Switch with its handheld capabilities makes perfect sense for internet browsing.

Im sure, however it will get one eventually, this whole launch seems like a Zelda launch and early test more than anything, features and applications will be add over time

And then Iwata's final words were "Wii U and 3DS didn't sell well at high prices, so make this device not too -"

While he couldn't finish his sentence, Nintendo execs knew what he was going to say: cheap, don't make this device too cheap.

And I am grateful - the device looks like the most solidly built N device in a decade.

Pretty much. For all the things that Iwata did for the switch, Nintendo hobbled it with high pricing.

I'm hoping this device can boost Japan's console / handheld market because it hasn't been doing so well lately. I shudder to think what would happen to Japanese game developers if that market entirely collapsed. (I suspect a bunch more mobile gacha stuff.)

Probably will see him credited in games up to 2018 at most. Kimishima has already been credited in a few games.

Edit: I swear i saw Iwata mentioned in the Sun/Moon credits, maybe i'm seeing things.

Thank you Mr. Iwata

I still wish i'd see him again doing a Nintendo Direct on YouTube unboxing the Switch wearing those sweet gloves like he did for the Wii U

:(

Rest In Peace

I assume these "no web browser" and "use a smartphone app to do X" shortcomings are temporary, but man there's some irony to that quote.

His insight sounds right, but it's a bit divorced from the reality of launch.

It's a shame that Iwata isn't around to see the fruit of his labour as I feel the Switch will do well in sales.

And yet the switch has no browser at launch.

Fixed it for you.

And beside a web browser isn't really an important feature to have up and running at launch, especially if they want to avoid it being cracked by an exploit via the browser.

I miss Iwata. What a legacy that man left us with.

If the Switch hits it big I'll be sad that he won't be here to witness it.

WiiU is the only console browser I've used because it's just so convenient when your in the middle of a game and need to google something. Wiiu YouTube is also amazing.

Is that right? That's a real shame, especially since he's had involvement with some of these projects.

credits don't mean much beyond who's doing what at the time the games are completed.

the previous president Yamauchi's name stopped appearing in games soon after he stepped down when Iwata took the position regardless of all the games that were still made under Yamauchi's time and came out during Iwata's days.
also, it's been almost 2 years. if anything, they put his name in plenty of games that were released after Kimishima was named president.

Your friend is in the 1% of people using browsers on consoles. Sorry bud, but 3/4 and more of the planet use other devices to browse other than consoles/portables. Nintendo can worry about low priority items after a year or so and find a solution.

Also, Iwata-san than you for leaving abit of your legacy in the Switch

I've never liked a console as much as the Switch, I'm very grateful towards Iwata for making it possible.

It's interesting to me that Miyamoto would choose to emphasize Iwata's focus on the Switch's online community aspects when Nintendo seem to have done away with the (actually quite nice) community features they had on 3DS and to a lesser extent on Wii U.

Then again, we don't yet know what will serve as their replacement on Switch.

Thank you, Mr. Iwata. Hopefully your last gift to the gaming industry turns out to be a hit (though it'd be a shame that Iwata won't be able to witness its success if it happens).

Tho you're banned, I'd gladly use a switch browser if it's anything like the wii u browser. It's surprisingly great.
