Only 17% of most Xbox 360 titles are ‘FPS/TPS’

According to various message boards on the Internet every now and then, from time to time it’s quite often that you’ll catch posts/threads ranting about too many shooters being on the Xbox 360, or how the Xbox 360 needs more variety in their selection of titles; both being very legitiment observations and discussions. In no way, shape or form am I saying that it is completely untrue. So, I thought I’d take some time out of my day to form a mini study on what software exactly is on the Xbox 360. Based on 137 Xbox 360 games, I found that not even a fourth of them are considered as First Person Shooters or Third Person Shooters, even added together. The study includes the majority of the Xbox 360 games that have been released or to be released this month(August), as for all other titles; Halo 3 included, were not added as they haven’t been released. Also, XBLA games were not factored in and neither was Virtual Console games for the Wii section of this study.

Now before we go further, let me point out that for a game to be considered an FPS accordingly; it must have the first person perspective view, and contain mainly shooting elements. For a game to be considered a TPS accordingly; it must have the third person perspective view and contain mainly shooting elements as well. Two good examples of these type of genres on Xbox 360 are Call of Duty 3 and Gears of War. Both titles stick with the shooting element throughout the game which is why they are always defined as FPSs/TPSs rather then Action.

Out of the 137 games that I have recorded and based on this study, (each title was placed within a genre that defines them), and as I did this I found that there are only 15 FPS titles and 8 TPS titles.

As of note; if you find a title I didn’t add, please send me a comment and I will add it. All titles were placed in genres that we I felt was probable.

It's a third person action adventure game with shooting elements, but I don't think I've ever heard someone call Tomb Raider a shooter.

Do you count games that are available on PC as exclusive?

Lots of this exclusive stuff is a slippery slope and not totally objective.

That list sucks, really it does.

Action/Action Adventure is a way too big group. You can put so much games in it. Full Auto isn't an Action Adventure game in my opinion, as an examplw

17 percent is a pretty big percentage. And it'll only grow larger after this holiday season. It seems like a good 50 percent of the anticipated holiday titles are either FPS/FPA/TPS.

Why? Shitty games are part of the library too. And in fact, there are plenty of shitty shooters that get released. You have to count them ALL to get an accurate assessment.

These may not be shooters, but they certainly fall under the same umbrella of "Shoot things to win.", and definitely help perpetuate the overall sense of 360 games often being centered around guns.

I love Viva Pinata but since it sold poorly I'm not really supposed to consider it as a non-shooter option? :lol

Who's talking about what I want to play? I'm just saying that I can understand why it's seen as 'the shooter console'. Of course it offers more than that, but its known for it's shooters for a reason.

Heck even if you remove them its still going to be a small chunk. Most of the sports titles are exclusive next gen games in that 360 came out a year earlier. Some games he even missed as being on PS3 (DIRT, etc). Here is his list updated as best as I could quickly for next gen "exclusives" (I just removed ones that were on PS3 or Wii). It jumped up a whole percentage. If I missed any, sue me.
