Microsoft fluffing up reviewers?

BLOG – This is perhaps the schwag bag to end all schwag bags…

Game journo Dean Takahashi with The San Jose Mercury News showed off his big $800-plus bag of Halo 3 propaganda sent to him by Microsoft.

He’s sending back the free stuff, which he called “nothing less than a bribe to try to get me to be favorably inclined to accepting the idea that Halo 3 is ‘the entertainment event of the year.’”

Included in the huge personalized duffel bag of goodies are Xbox 360 controllers, a Halo 3 Xbox Live headset, a displayable Master Chief helmet and a $480 Halo 3 limited edition Xbox 360, not to mention a first aid kit and some UNSC-issued food.

Check it all out on the Dean & Nooch on Gaming video podcast (and how Halo 3 made Takahashi barf).

i wonder if EDGE got a certain goodie bag mmmm....

maybe nintendo should have given EDGE a Samus Helmet and etc etc:lol

Halo 3 is a good game and this doesn't change that, nor does it mean that positive reviews were not genuine, but does anyone here really expect any differently from Microsoft? They're aggressive as hell and certainly wouldn't balk at that sort of thing if they thought it'd help their bottom line.

I need an xbox 360 and halo three, so if you reviewers would be kind enough to forward those to me.....

Because they are the only company that does this. Konami, Nintendo, Sega, Sony, etc. don't even send reviewers game disks.

Didn't Sony send out that sexy guide book for Lair?

i thought i was gonna get one of these and was all omg then the package came and it was just the game

all scratched to shit

i have a hard time believing that reviewers would actually be swayed by getting these. it's not entirely uncommon for them to get special packages along with their review materials. other games do teh same thing, just that there isn't typically a special edition console to go along with it.

Microsoft provided them the whole package to experience Halo3 for review. I guess they didn't know they already have 360s ;-)

At least 1up should. Shoe's stated multiple times that they don't accept gifts from publishers or developers.

Yeah, no kidding eh? I'm still disgusted by that guy taking the Halo Xbox and pretty much everything else and leaving the other guy with jack.

This is not a problem unique to Microsoft or to the gaming industry.

It's probably most serious in the pharmaceutical industry, where clinical/hospital pharmacists are regularly flown on all-expenses-paid trips, given 5 star hotel rooms, high-class meals, etc by drug companies promoting their products. While many countries have crafted laws to prohibit this, the practice has not stopped because exceptions are made for trips that are educational in nature--so you get pharma companies sponsoring nominally educational conferences.

Even providing the game for free can subtly influence how the reviewer conceives of the game's value in relation to its price. Any reviewer, game, movie, or other has had experience with swag like shirts and other minor stuff, but admittedly this is a little over the top.

I also recall some major gaming journalist accidentally having his file with either Microsoft or Sony's PR firm forwarded to him in email. And basically, their notes about him included "Likely to give us good PR, but a little stupid. Needs more direct instruction and hand-holding" or something similar. Everyone reading it was surprised, but the fact is that this sort of thing is common practice.

He, in France they sent us the game only, not even the CE, and this one day before the release date...
For Halo 2 we all got a Master Chief resin statue, that was pretty cool.

"Fluffing" refers to getting male porn stars hard before shoots. So this is possible.

Ya - for a second there - I thought I was going to open this thread and read about Microsoft picking up reviewers in limos and taking them to the Bunny Ranch. :D

Yeah but this game is really good and exclusive to one console. You can see how that changes things.
Not to mention MS is touting it broke records, the scores are TOO awesome to believe (no pun), and it's in 640P. And oh yeah, it has no tutorial....

Will drop pants for Sony.
wow, just wow, who thought this was a good idea?

I think Hsu will have a dedicated area for Halo on his desk.

It seems all of them got all this. I felt damn jealous seeing 1UP pulling all that shit out of a duffel bag. Engadget and ******* seem to be giving theirs away in contests.

If those retards wanna give those review kits that MS went out of their way to give to everyone back to them, they might as well send them my way... jeez...
